Perodua has joined the fight against COVID-19 by contributing RM2 million to the National Disaster Management Agency’s (NADMA) COVID-19 fund. In addition to the sizeable sum, Perodua has also donated 150 mattresses, 200 pillows, 105 boxes of mineral water, 15 industrial fans and 300 pairs of rubber boots to the Sungai Buloh Hospital to aid the ongoing fight against the global pandemic.
The Sungai Buloh Hospital is one of the Malaysian government's hospitals which has been designated as a COVID-19 treatment centre and it would seem that since Perodua is based close by, in Serendah, which is a short drive away, the Malaysian compact car manufacturer has deemed this would be the place for them to assist. Of course, help those close to home first and this is a good thing.
Perodua President and Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad presented the contribution to Malaysian Prime Minister YAB Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin at the Prime Minister’s Office late last week.
“This war against COVID-19 is our shared responsibility. The funds and items contributed by Perodua are part of our ongoing efforts to ensure Malaysia will recover as fast as it can,” said Dato’ Zainal.
According to media reports, the NADMA-COVID 19 fund was launched by the Prime Minister on 11 March 2020 with the objective of aiding citizens who were most vulnerable to the impact of the Movement Control Order (MCO), which came into force on 18 March 2020. The NADMA-COVID-19 fund’s target groups include the unemployed and others affected by the MCO. There will be many as the Malaysian economy has indeed stalled due to the MCO.
The Malaysian government also recently introduced the Prihatin Rakyat Stimulus Package to further help Malaysians impacted by COVID-19 and an additional stimulus earlier today (6th March 2020) to help out the SMEs (of course Perodua is much larger than a SME) but we have just heard that more assistance is been provided by the government.
“We thank the government for these measures. Perodua, in solidarity with all Malaysians, hopes this pandemic will be resolved in the shortest time and with minimal infections and fatalities. To those who have lost loved ones to COVID-19, we extend our sincere condolences,” Dato’ Zainal said.
“As for Perodua, we have also directed all our staff, the greater automotive supply chain and our authorised dealers to pay keen attention to their staff’s needs and welfare during this MCO. To this end, we are monitoring the situation closely to ensure that our ecosystem’s livelihoods, like wage, benefits and especially employment, are not impacted,” he added.
“We are committed to the social distancing measures enforced by the authorities to ensure
the spread of the virus is contained.”
Dato’ Zainal also stated that he hopes that Perodua's customers and all Malaysians stay indoors and stay healthy during this trying period.
