Video Test Drive: 2020 Isuzu D-Max Double Cab 1.9L AT-Premium - Capable, Well Built & Economical

D-max test drive Motoring Malaysia

Below is the video review / test drive of the 2020 Isuzu D-Max Double Cab 1.9L AT-Premium. It was  put up on the Motoring Malaysia YouTube channel last week and I have not put a link to it here. I must have forgotten about it actually.  Anyway, another video review for you guys to watch, especially since most of Malaysia and certain parts of the world are on a semi-lockdown due to the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak. Watch it if you have nothing else to do folks!

The 2020 Malaysian spec Isuzu D-Max Double Cab 1.9L AT-Premium is a four door pickup truck based on the second generation D-Max chassis which was launched back in 2011-12. This is the latest facelift of this model launched sometime in 2017-2018 and it is still in production for various markets around the world. Even though Isuzu had also launched a new model at the end of last year. So countries like Thailand may have gotten the new one and we have this one with the small capacity 1.9liter engine aside from the larger 3.0liter variant.

The gem in this pickup truck is the small capacity 1.9liter turbodiesel 4 cylinder engine. It makes 150PS and the important 350Nm torque. This gives it a lot of pulling power for a truck with such a small capacity engine. It has taken a while for Isuzu to bring this engine variant here and it is actually quite a good performing engine as you can see in the video.

This is definitely the future in terms of turbodiesel technology and we even see other small capacity diesels from other makes. This 1.9L isn't new in some other markets (like Thailand) but it just arrived here end of 2019. So we finally get to try it after a few years being sold elsewhere. Late here most likely due to the lesser quality (Euro 2M) diesel standard which isn't so lilked by modern direct injection turbodiesel engines which prefer a lot less sulphur content. Only now we seem to be getting something called Euro4M (which still isn't a 'real' Euro4 grade in most sense).

It is quite sad that Malaysia has taken its sweet time in implementing better quality diesel. Manufacturers are actually reluctant to tweak their engines as most of the countries around the world have already adopted better quality diesel. Even Thailand are faster in adopting cleaner fuels.

We seem to have put emphasis in safety equipment, but we do not seem to care about the air we breathe. Both are equally important and it also does not allow manufacturers to give us the most powerful, or cleanest engines on the market today. Well, it took Isuzu at least 5 years before they could offer this good 1.9Liter here.

Anyway, enjoy the video folks. It is about 25 minutes long so most stuff are covered inside it and I think I do not need to elaborate more about it here except that the D-Max may be utilitarian in terms of its looks and styling, but it is extremely well built, well put together and that 1.9L engine gives it more than adequate power for its size.
