Isuzu D-MAX 1.9 Liter Completes 1k Challenge - Driving 1,000km with 1,000kg and up to 1,000 Meters Above Sea Level On a Single Tank of Diesel

The newly launched Malaysian specification Isuzu D-Max pickup truck with the 1.9liter turbodiesel engine has proven its worth again. Having recently being driven in the hypermiling event called the Dura Miles Challenge, the new Isuzu D-Max was driven from Bangkok to Singapore on a single tank of diesel, Isuzu Malaysia had decided to push the new D-Max with its 1.9-litre Blue Power engine through another challenge shows off its performance and hauling capability.

This time, Isuzu Malaysia chose not to do so in a high spec variant but they chose the very basic 1.9-litre Single Cab model. The pickup was loaded to its maximum permissible capacity of 1,000kg or 1 metric ton and it was then driven  through some of the highest accessible hillside roads along the Titiwangsa Mountain Range. The D-Max single cab had clocked over 1,000km, carried 1,000kg and crossed the 1,000 meter mark in terms of height above sea level in the Isuzu D-Max 1.9 Blue Power Dura Challenge. All of these were completed with two bars of fuel still remaining in the tank.

The adventure began over at the Isuzu-Hicom Malaysia factory in Pekan, Pahang. Before starting off, the D-Max had gone a thorough inspection  by PUSPAKOM (the Malaysian vehicle road worthiness agency) to verify its conformity as a showroom-standard unit before ensuring the weight of the load had indeed exceeded the 1,000kg target.

With its crates, bonnet and fuel tank sealed, the Isuzu D-Max managed its journey through the East-West highway linking Jeli in Kelantan and Gerik in Perak with a climb to the peak of 1,052m before heading to Ipoh for the night.

The second day of the challenge was even more daunting as the D-Max Single Cab with its load made its way up 1,112m to Tanah Rata in Cameron Highlands before heading on to Fraser’s Hill (1,222m) via Raub. From there, the journey took on an even-bigger challenge; the 1,604m-high climb up to Genting Highlands before ending the journey at the Isuzu Service Centre in Shah Alam after clocking 1,145km. The truck also went through some flooded areas too.

“The prowess of the Isuzu D-Max continues to astound with its remarkable capabilities. Despite being the pick-up truck with smallest displacement on the market, the 1.9-litre Isuzu D-Max completed the challenge with absolute ease and confidence. It truly suggests that the Isuzu D-Max 1.9-litre Blue Power has what it takes to get any job done,” said Chief Operating Officer of Isuzu Malaysia Masayuki Suzuki.

Consuming an average of just 7.2L/100km (13.7km/L) based on the reading from its on-board computer, the 1.9L Single Cab made it back to the start / finish point with fuel to spare in its 76-litre tank. Or in simpler talk, two bars of diesel left on the fuel gauge.

“Through advanced technology, the new 1.9-litre RZ4E-TC engine is by far the most fuel efficient engine ever produced by Isuzu Motors and this was clearly demonstrated in this exercise. Perhaps some vehicles can travel long distances on a tank of fuel, some can probably manage to carry a ton of weight or climb mountains. But to achieve all three criteria with one vehicle is a true feat of a competent vehicle,” added CEO of Isuzu Malaysia Koji Nakamura.

The 2019 onwards Isuzu D-Max driven here  is powered by the latest 1.9-litre Blue Power diesel engine that produces more power and torque than the 2.5-litre model it replaces. The newer engine features innovative technologies including a novel combustion chamber and intake manifold design, a new fuel injection system that provides more accurate fuel atomization and a newly-developed Variable Geometry (VGS) Turbocharger that delivers better engine response over a wider rev range.

It also has low-friction parts that have been coated with Molybdenum and Graphite, the engine is able to provide enhanced reliability while reducing stress on individual components.  These combine to reduce the engine weight by 56kg making new Isuzu D-Max 1.9-litre Blue Power models one of the most dependable and affordable pick-up trucks on the market due to its lower maintenance costs and reduced road tax. Very important for those that buy such trucks here in Malaysia (especially the more higher priced road tax structure in Peninsular Malaysia compared to Sabah and Sarawak).

All Isuzu D-Max models including the 1.9-litre Single Cab come with a 5-year 150,000km warranty, ensuring that owners enjoy an ownership experience that enable them to enjoy the most of their dependable and efficient Isuzu pick-up trucks.
