All-New Toyota Corolla Altis Now Open For Booking - Prices Estimated at RM128K Onwards With Only The 1.8L Engine Available

The authorised distributors of Toyota here in Malaysia have announced that the All-New Toyota Corolla will be launched soon and UMW Toyota Motors have also stated that you can place your bookings for the C-segment sized sedan from today, the 12th of September 2019.

According to the statement released by UMW Toyota, there will be two variants of the All-New Toyota Corolla Altis for Malaysia. These are the 1.8G and 1.8E variants and the estimated on the road price is RM136,888 and RM128,888, respectively. It looks like the cars are priced slightly higher than the outgoing model which was at RM123K and RM120K.

One reason for this increase in price is that the Corolla is now an all new 12th generation model which has been completely redesigned and re-engineered. The new Corolla uses Toyota'S New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform which is said to offer better performance, better driving dynamics and more comfort for those that are seated in the sedan. It is also now fitted out with more active safety features as it comes with the latest Toyota Safety Sense integrated safety systems. The added safety features should provide a safer driving experience.

One other point that has not been stated was whether the new Corolla will be assembled locally or over in Thailand. We seem to think it will come from Thailand because of the slightly higher asking price (aside from the Active Safety Systems included) and the fact that it would not be economical for Toyota (as a whole) to assemble it outside its Thai manufacturing hub due to the shrinking sedan market. So there may be trade-offs in play here.

The Corolla nameplate is considered as the bestselling car in the world and is among the first cars to be assembled in Malaysia about 50 years ago. So that being said, it is a shame that this car isn't assembled here.

Anyway, the new Corolla will as usual be front wheel drive and come with a 7 speed CVT automatic transmission. While it may come from Thailand, the engine should be the same as the outgoing version with 138hp and 173Nm torque. Oh, UMW Toyota seems to have dropped the 2.0liter variant at the moment. Blame this on the shrinking sedan market again, folks!
