The Daihastu Gran Max Panel Van with Automatic Transmission is Officially on Sale in Malaysia

Daihatsu Malaysia has officially launched the New Gran Max Panel Van (AT) as we have written about earlier. The new panel van  is the first automatic transmission small commercial van to be sold here and it is specially designed to accommodate the requirements of mobile SME businesses (business ‘on-wheel’) that is blooming in the country as well as other corporations and government agencies. So everyone can basically drive it easily as these days, there are many who cannot drive a manual. Times have changed.

The Daihatsu Gran Max panel van AT may have an automatic transmission instead of a 5 speed manual. But it is still able to accommodate up to 2,000 kg of gross weight (with load). It is powered by a fuel injected DOHC DVVT 1.5 litre 4 cylinder engine, that produces maximum power of 71kW/6000rpm and maximum torque of 134Nm/4400rpm. The engine is compatible with RON 95 petrol and is suitable for our climate. It is rear-wheel drive (RWD) and the automatic transmission is a robust, traditional 4 speed automatic.

The Gran Max Panel Van AT is basic and therefore very reliable, but necessary since it is a commercial vehicle. The engine and gearbox are actually familiar one and one has seen variants of it in local Toyota and Perodua vehicles. As such, maintenance and reliability are similar to these other associate brands. Daihatsu is ultimately part of the same group of companies you know.

The Gran Max panel van also boasts a 4.7m small turning radius for easy handling in tight spots. The  traditional torque converter automatic transmission allows better maneuverability through busy city roads, tight corners as well as driving up the hills. And most importantly, less stress for the driver during traffic jams.

For extra safety and comfort, Daihatsu also adopted the new product with anti-lock braking system (ABS) and dual front SRS airbags along with its high rigidity monocoque body structure.

The Grand Max is fully imported and manufactured at Daihatsu's Jakarta ADM Plant According to Daihatsu Malaysia,  all three arms of Daihatsu Japan, Indonesia and Malaysia took pride of working hand-in-hand, conducting in-depth research of  local environment and driving habits.

Daihatsu Malaysia also stated that many of their customers for this vehicle will be first timers of owning and driving a commercial vehicle due to the easier nature of its automatic transmission. This is actually a niche market that Daihatsu Malaysia aims to tap into.

Dr. Iqbal Shaharom, Managing Director of Daihatsu (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. and Acting President & Chief Executive Officer of MBM Resources Bhd said, “We believe there is a large potential in the country, as based on reported  statistics*, there are more than 900,000 SME establishments (not including - the bigger corporations and government agencies). As such, we want to tap into this segment and are happy to develop a vehicle that will help Malaysian businesses reach out to their customers and support the idea of ‘go-to-the-market’,” he added.
