If you're the type of person who thinks that any 5 door hot hatch is still looks like a shopping trolley then I've got news for you. Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) are bringing in very limited units (10 ONLY) of the 3 door Volkswagen Golf R. Now open for booking, the 3-door Golf R priced at RM 268,888 (before registration).
This is the most sporting of all the Golf out there. 3 doors means less practicality but more sporty looks (AND most likely a slightly more rigid chassis than the 5 door which should benefit handling at the extreme limits). This is important to some and would suit some hard core enthusiasts even more than the 5 door version. Of course, VPCM are keeping it special with only 10 units made available for now and it is only offered in Lapiz Blue.
Performance figures are similar to its 5-door sibling, the 3-door Golf R comes with a new 2.0TSI turbocharged engine which makes 290PS and torque of 380Nm between 2,000 to 5,400rpm. The power is transmitted via a 7-speed wet clutch direct shift gearbox (DSG) and through the 4MOTION all-wheel drive system.
The Golf R is also specced with the R ‘Vienna’ perforated leather seats, 19” Pretoria alloy wheels, 12.3” Active Info Display, 9.2” Discover Pro with App-Connect with Gesture Control, LED headlights with Dynamic Cornering Lights, LED taillights with Dynamic Indicators, and progressive steering.
However, the 3-door Golf R differes in that it is not offered with KESSY keyless locking and engine starting system, exterior mirror memory function and power-adjustable driver seat. I suppose this is a balance between equipment levels and keeping the fully imported pricing competitive.
Mr Erik Winter, Managing Director of VPCM mentioned that the Golf R is one of the most desirable Volkswagen models of all time, and the availability of the 3-door Golf R should have fans excited. He states that with such a cult following, VPCM is confident that all 10 units will be sold very quickly.
The Golf R is Volkswagen's ultimate performance hatch and it has set and broken numerous track records around the world especially in this seventh generation guise (this is the facelifted, upgraded version 7.5 we are talking about here). It is one of the most well-rounded cars available in the market and when I had tested the pre-facelift Golf R, it was one of the best drives I ever had in a hatchback. It is extremely good.
Bookings can be made at all authorized Volkswagen dealerships nationwide. But 10 units folks...you should hurry.
