Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia addresses customer concerns – “What happens after the 5-year warranty?”

I think this must come as some comforting news for all Volkswagen car owners here in Malaysia. Well, those with Volkswagen cars produced till December 2013 whose 5 year (3+2) warranty had just expired - something like the Golf TSI above. The company really wants to win back the hearts of its customers and this is an unprecedented move by such an established manufacturer.

This has been taken from the PRESS RELEASE which I have included below:
Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) today announced an additional 2-year “VPCM Customer Care Goodwill” on the Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) on cars produced till December 2013, with mileage of up to 200,000km. This goodwill takes place after the expiration of the 5-year warranty period on these vehicles. Additionally, “VPCM Customer Care Goodwill” is also offered on other selected components for Volkswagen cars that have passed its 5-year warranty period expiration date.

Goodwill on DSG*
The 2-year “VPCM Customer Care Goodwill” on DSG will receive an extended 2-year parts warranty on the goodwill repair, from the time of parts replacement – with the application of minimal labour charges. This additional 2-year warranty covers 100% parts and labour.

Goodwill on other components*
VPCM also offers “VPCM Customer Care Goodwill” beyond the standard warranty period on other selected parts on a case-by-case basis. This will be clarified at the respective authorized Volkswagen Service Centre using the car’s VIN number on VPCM’s online system.

As per Volkswagen standard parts warranty, parts that are replaced and paid for at an authorized Volkswagen Service Centre receive a 2-year warranty. This excludes wear and tear. To qualify for the “VPCM Customer Care Goodwill” on DSG and other components, customers must have a full service history at any authorised Volkswagen Service Centre.

This means that your 5 year old Volkswagen's gearbox is still covered up to 200,000km. Why 200,000km? This is actually how long the clutch plates should last in the car due to wear and tear. Any car with clutch plates usually suffer from wear at around this type of mileage. When I was using my Impreza I changed it at around 200,000km. When I used my beat up, hand-me-down 1981 Honda Civic 1.3 manual I remember changing the clutch plate quite regularly due to traffic light 'racing' in my younger days.

So 200,000km makes a lot of sense. Another good thing to know about cars these days is that they are usually built with the engine and electronics to be able to maintain their emissions level up to 200,000km under Euro 4 and above. So beyond this mileage it is usually up to the owner to keep their vehicles in good condition.
