This is a fairly interesting alternative for those interested in an affordable junior hot hatch. A 2005 Mitsubishi Colt Ralliart 1.5 MIVEC Turbo going for RM33,800. This was ridiculously expensive for a small car when it was new due to its fully imported nature. The base normally aspirated Colt 1.5 MIVEC already had a list price of around RM120K so this one is at least a good RM20K more when it was new. Even so, there were those that bought it. But I think most bought them after Mitsubishi Malaysia threw price rebates into the package. There were also some WALD badged imports - this was the time when some grey importers tried to be smart and CON-vinced the government to issue them tuning APs turning everything from a Toyota Wish , a Mitsubishi Colt or a Volkswagen Golf into a WALD branded car.
Anyway, let's go back to the subject at hand, the Colt Turbo pictured herein. It is no looker for sure. It is not one of those nicely styled wide arched swoopy Honda Civic type of hatch. Whilst not an ugly S.O.B it is styled like an upright small single box hatchback in the mould of the Honda Jazz. The shape is designed to be spacious and any performance model is surely an afterthought.
I means, manufacturers would basically take a small upright hatch like this, throw in a more powerful engine (with a turbo these days) and a slightly stiffened up suspension and call it the Sports model. This is exactly what happend to this car which was meant for Japanese grannies to take to the supermarket and back. I mean look at it - Tall cabin, large glass area, smallish wheel arches.
In 2005 Mitsubishi were still riding on the fact that their Lancer Evolution models were top notch performance cars. People also thought the Ralliart brand did wonders to Mitsubishi cars (Malaysians even thought putting Ralliart stickers on their Perodua, Ford, Mazda, Proton especially made their rides at least 50hp better). The trickle down effect was in play here and why not make a tuned up model of their small hatch. And this Colt Ralliart MIVEC Turbo happened. Quite mad as it looks so tame. But it had 147hp and 210Nm. It could do 0-100kmh in about 8 seconds (mid 7secs with a manual) with the INVECS-III CVT and could hit over 200kmh. So it was actually quite fast. But the original problem with this car in Malaysia was that it was bloody expensive. And now since its used, it is quite reasonable.
This one is a nice example up for sale but I would haggle the price down more and/or ask the sales person that you want to buy the car at that price without all their stupid transfer fees (used cars tend to charge up to RM2,500 for miscellaneous fees that make no sense at all. So beware).
Oh....and do not that there is something called the Colt Plus Turbo out there too. It has a longer rear for more boot space and it something of a mini MPV type car that is actually quite horrendous in terms of looks. If you want to drive around in something that looks like an egg you can buy the Colt Plus. I would recommend this regular Colt Turbo for people who want a semblance of street cred. Buy a Colt Plus and no girl or guy would even look at you. Unless you got it dirt cheap...this means under RM20,000 as you'll still be getting 147hp and then you can see the faces of bewildered people who just got their rides whooped by an egg.
