Spotted For Sale: 1964 Mercedes Benz 220S - Oh, the Horror!!!!

The first word that came to my mind when I saw this was...why? What we have here is an abomination of sorts. A classic collectible Mercedes Benz Fintail that has its heart transplanted to a twin turbo Japanese engine together with a cobbled up interior. Take a look at that transmission tunnel/center console. Taken straight from the donor Toyota car with some D.I.Y panels to put some gauges here and there. Even the doors have some funky mdf (aka plywood) board to hold some speakers.

A 1964 220S would be oh so collectible if it had the stock engine and the original interior. Of course, I have a feeling that the person selling this car found it engineless in some scrap yard or under a kampung house. It must have been owned by an ex-taxi driver who kept it after retiring sometime in the 1980s. In the 1970s and 1980s, a lot of Fintail and Ponton Mercedes were Malaysian taxis. Most of them were diesel and I suspect that this 220S had a diesel engine shoved into it when it became a taxi. The original 2.2liter 6 cylinder engine that powered this W111 series S class made 105hp. I think this was swapped for a w110 190d 2.0liter diesel engine that made 65hp. Sad but true.

So when this enterprising fella found this, he must have thought that this old Mercedes must be a good starting point for something fast but cool enough to drive. He buys it, puts slightly newer Mercedes Benz 15inch wheels, slams it down, defiles the interior and then shoves in a Toyota twin turbo that most likely is a 1JZ engine from a Toyota Chaser. It is either he has gotten bored or funds ran out or both. It usually happens when it comes to those who end up playing with difficult projects. He wants RM28,000 for it.

I have to say what a darn waste of a very classic Mercedes Benz Fintail aka Heckflosse in German. This was actually the top of the line car in those days. It is an S-Class, if you know what I mean. I would have kept the darn thing original or try and find an original engine. In pristine condition it would be a great wedding car or even a fabulous classic that would actually cost three  to four times the price he is asking for this car. Oh, the horror!!!!
