Proton X70 Selected as Official Vehicles for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 2020

The Proton X70 SUV has been selected as one of the official vehicles of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 2020 or MyAPEC 2020. Currently Malaysia's most popular C segment SUV, the X70 will be used as one of the official vehicles in the year long forum that is intended to promote economic cooperation throughout the Asia-Pacific region.

Throughout a one year period, officials from the 21 APEC Economies / Countries will visit Malaysia as Committees and Working Groups where they will deliberate various issues towards regional economic integration. These people will be discussing matters on liberalising trade and investment as well as addressing issues on embracing digitalisation, increasing human resource development efforts, and strengthening women empowerment, among others. So as they go about doing so, they will be ferried around in a Proton X70 here.

Malaysian carmaker PROTON states that one reason why the X70 was chosen was that it is due to its status as a national automotive brand. PROTON is a symbol of Malaysia’s industrialization as it moved from a natural resource based economy to a manufacturing and knowledge based economy. Hopefully, this statement rings true and we will still be able to engineer, design and build our own cars in the future. We also hope that it just isn't PROTON or even its other Malaysian counterpart, Perodua that can showcase Malaysian know-how. We need more knowledge based economies rather than just selling raw products.

The Proton X70 is, was (depending on the time you are reading this article) the first vehicle to be launched since PROTON started its collaboration with the Geely Automobile Group. The SUV has jump started the brand and its overall public image as it became the fastest-selling SUV in its class. The current models are powered by a 1.8liter Turbocharged engine with or without all-wheel drive (front wheel drive) and a 6 speed automatic transmission.

“PROTON is proud to support Malaysia in hosting the APEC 2020. With its intelligent features, comfortable ride, refined interior and five-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating, we believe the Proton X70 is perfect for showcasing how cooperation between nations via forums such as APEC can help uplift each other, and thus raise the capabilities of entire industries and supporting ecosystems,” said Dr. Li Chunrong, CEO of PROTON.

During the year-long MyAPEC 2020 programme, Proton will ensure that there will be sufficient X70s to be used by the working officials and that it is hoped that the SUVs will have more positive impressions by the people using them from the 21 nations.
