Mercedes-Benz Malaysia Launches the Facelifted GLC-Series with the GLC 200, GLC 300 4MATIC and the GLC 300 4MATIC Coupe

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia (MBM) has launched the facelifted Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class of SUVs. These newly upgraded model combines outstanding on and off-road driving characteristics with spaciousness, practicality, comfort and advanced pioneering technologies, connectivity and state-of- the-art infotainment is now in Malaysia. Locally assembled, the facelifted GLCs are now equipped with MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) infotainment system as well as the MMC (Mercedes me connect) feature. This is basically the one that you can now give it voice commands.

The new GLC variants for Malaysia are  the Mercedes-Benz GLC 200, Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 4MATIC as well as the Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 4MATIC CoupéThe new GLC series of vehicles are priced from RM299,888 and is equipped with intelligent drive features such as the Parking Package as well as the Storage Package. There are no longer the GLC 250 and they have now been upgraded to the GLC 300 in terms of performance, equipment. On a global level, Mercedes-Benz has stopped using the 250 moniker for the GLC series so MBM is following the global trend for model numbering

Michael Jopp, Vice President, Sales & Marketing Passenger Cars, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia did the launched presentation where he said, “With the new generation Mercedes-Benz SUV line-up, we are redefining the standards of luxury SUV segment in Malaysia by combining a different level of mobility and innovation. As part of our product offensive strategy, the line-up offers our customers comfort and luxury beyond what you would expect from an SUV, in addition to the spaciousness, practicality as well as the performance.”

Aside from the refreshed looks, which you see a slightly different bumper treatment front and back, some extra trim bits here and there, the biggest change is the addition of the full MBUX suit and MMC system. These allows the you to give the SUV the 'Hey Mercedes'  voice command intro and also the smartphone controlled MMC me connect feature to start and stop the car from a distance. Another great change is the addition of touch input to the larger-sized infotainment screen, good as it is actually close enough to use and more in line with the Ipad, touch everything generation of gadgets.

Mr Jopp showed how the MMC features worked and we noted that it is now possible to start the GLC 300 Coupe from afar via a smartphone. However, the caveat is that it has to be within cellular reception so during the launch, it had a bit of delay to start and even turn off the engine via the phone. Most likely not an issue if you are parked in a more open area. But one must also state that this can be retrofitted to most Mercedes-Benz from 2002 onwards depending on model and variant.

In terms of the MMC system for the GLC, it will be fitted to all 2020 model year onwards (which is this one if you buy it now) and for those who want retrofitting, you can do so early 2020.

Personally, the biggest winner in terms of specification upgrades is the entry level GLC 200. It now looks like it has better equipment and tech inside and out. It feels more premium than before. Most likely helped by the upgraded MBUX system. That extra chrome trimming also help lift its looks a notch higher than the pre-facelift GLC 200. Overall, this refresh is quite comprehensive inside and out for all variants.

Mercedes-Benz GLC 200 & GLC 300 4MATIC

Powered by the 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine (M264), the Mercedes-Benz GLC 200 and GLC 300 4MATIC produce output of 145 kW (197 hp) and 320 Nm of torque and 190 kW (258 hp) and 370 Nm of torque, respectively. The nine-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission also comes as standard on both.

The chrome elements, now run from the front to the rear end as standard. There are the redesigned LED high performance headlamps and a heavily contoured radiator grille on the GLC 200 ensure a strong off-road character. These are included in the Optical Off-road package, along with the 20-inch 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels. This variant still comes without the AMG-Line body kit like the previous GLC 250 or the new GLC 300 4MATIC variants.

The GLC 300 4MATIC is now equipped with the Night Package and it is based on the AMG Line exterior that features black design elements. It comes with the 20- inch AMG 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels and the MULTIBEAM LED headlamps which respond to traffic situations with individually controllable LEDs. There is also a panoramic sliding sunroof in this higher specified variant.

The interior of the Mercedes-Benz GLC 200 and GLC 300 4MATIC are adorned with the Exclusive Line and AMG Line packages, respectively. Both SUVs come with the illuminated door sills whereby the word “Mercedes-Benz” is illuminated in brilliant white, set in an elegantly machined stainless steel panel on the door sill. 

The ARTICO Leather upholstery in both the SUVs makes seats even more sophisticated which turns into the space for experiences. The MBUX is complemented by a fully-digital 12.3-inch instrument cluster with display styles – “Classic”, “Progressive” and “Sporty”. The touch-operated media display, on the other hand is 10.25-inch in size, with the resolution of 1920 x 720 pixels.

The Mercedes-Benz GLC 200 is rear wheel drive and features a suspension for higher ground clearance. The damping is controlled individually for each wheel according to the driving situation, vehicle speed and the condition of the road surface. The AGILITY CONTROL suspension with selective damping system in the GLC 300 4MATIC (meaning it is all-wheel drive) combines balanced ride comfort and high driving stability. Ride characteristics, damping effects and stabilisation are continuously and automatically adapted to the condition of the road surface.

Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 4MATIC Coupé

The new generation Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 4MATIC Coupé ispowered by the 2.0-litre four cylinder turbo engine (M264), the GLC 300 Coupé makes 258 hp and 370 Nm on the road, allowing it to go from 0 – 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds. It has the same 9 speed 9G-Tronic transmission unit.

Like the GLC 300, the Coupé is also equipped with a Night Package based on the AMG Line exterior. The AMG Line is imposing on the outside of the GLC 300 Coupé with sport aprons and the 20-inch AMG 5 twin-spoke light-alloy wheels. 

It also comes with the MULTIBEAM LED headlamps which respond to traffic situations with individually controllable LEDs. The exterior also exudes an even sportier design with the imposing diamond radiator grille that catches the eye, just like the striking air intakes in the bumper. At the rear, the GLC 300 Coupé is fixed with an intriguing tailpipe trim integrated into the bumper and the streamlined LED rear tail lamps with their contemporary lighting design.

As for the interior of the new GLC Coupé, it features intelligent comfort functions, an exciting new operating system and digital displays. With the MBUX and Mercedes me connect, the GLC 300 Coupé has a new and intuitive form of control – using either the intuitive touch control buttons or simple voice output. 

The cockpit is also made easier with the fully-digital cockpit. It consists of a 10.25-inch media display with touch functionality and 12.3-inch instrument cluster, including navigation display. The inside is made more contemporary than ever, with the leather upholstery and the light longitudinal-grain aluminium trim.

With the model update, the GLC 300 Coupé is equipped with the Sports suspension which delivers a firmer set-up for the damper characteristics. It also comes with the PRE-SAFE® system – a system that works to prepare and protect the passengers in an accident, before it even happens. The system is able to sense when a collision is unavoidable, thanks for the sensors placed throughout the vehicle, which function with multiple safety systems. Once a collision is detected, the systems acts to prepare the passengers by tightening the front seatbelts, adjusting front head restraints and even close the windows and sunroof.
