UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd (UMWT) is a successful Malaysian incorporated joint-venture company between UMW Corporation and Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC). Today, the company and their stakeholders celebrated 50 years of local production in Malaysia with a special ceremony held at the company's newest manufacturing facility in Bukit Raja, Klang, Selangor. The historic event was graced by His Royal Highness Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah AlHaj Ibni Almarhum Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Alhaj, The Sultan of Selangor and Her Royal Highness Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor.
It was indeed a notable event as aside from HRH The Sultan of Selangor and HRH The Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, other honourable persons present were Yang Amat Berhormat Tuan Amirudin Shari, Dato’ Menteri Besar of Selangor as well as His Excellency Dr. Makio Miyagawa the Ambassador of Japan to Malaysia. Mr. Tatsuro Ueda, Chief Executive Officer, China & Asia Region, Toyota Motor Corporation Japan, State Government and Federal Government officers, Toyota Motor Corporation representatives, business partners, top management of UMWT and other guests rounded up the attendees to the ceremony.
In his opening speech, UMWT Chairman Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Hamad Kama Piah bin Che Othman expressed his gratitude to the State government as well as the Federal Government for their tremendous support over the years. He also conveyed the company's immense gratitude to all Toyota customers and Malaysians for your contribution and support over the last 50 years. All of these have made the company what it is today.
It is very apt that the commemoration ceremony was held at UMW Toyota Motor's newest facility in Malaysia. It had cost RM2 billion to build the new manufacturing facility and Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Hamad Kama Piah stated that the move has brought in the latest and advanced manufacturing technology, high levels of automation, innovative design while promoting energy efficiency in Malaysia.
“At the same time, we have not forgotten the environment and safety; our new plant has been conceived as a Society-Caring plant which is less noisy and it operates with various renewable energy initiatives as well as low in carbon footprint,” said Tan Sri Hamad.
Aside from being environmentally friendly, UMWT also puts an importance on Human Capital Development to develop more high-skilled Malaysian talent while reducing the need for foreign labour. Tan Sri Hamad also mentioned that in tandem with market expansion, UMWT would continue to develop local suppliers and promote better localization. He added that it also goes without saying that the company will always support the government policies and directions for the automotive industry
“Toyota’s vision is to lead the way to the future of mobility (is by) pursuing new and innovative ways of connecting people through transportation and technology. This can only be achieved by engaging the talent and passion of people, who believe there is always a “better way”. In this sense, I truly appreciate Malaysians and particularly the people of Selangor for your hard work to make Toyota grow to what it is today,” said Mr. Tatsuro Ueda, Chief Executive Officer, China & Asia Region, Toyota Motor Corporation, Japan, congratulated UMWT on the achievement.
Mr Ueda also described the new manufacturing facility as one of the best in Asia in terms of advanced manufacturing technology. He added that with the facility, Toyota will continue to provide “always better cars” and “lead the way of future mobility” in “an environmentally-friendly”, “safe” and “fun-to-drive” society. Toyota is definitely quite happy with the way things turned out in terms of their investment here in Malaysia.
To commemorate Toyota’s 50 years production milestone in Malaysia, UMWT presented a Toyota Yaris to the Selangor Youth Community (SAY). The new car will be used in youth related programmes that the organisation will be involved in. The Yaris hatchback was only recently launched and it has a youthful demeanour to it in terms of its styling and equipment levels.
The Yaris was handed over to HRH Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj Ibni Almarhum Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Alhaj on behalf of SAY Community. The association’s Patron is the Raja Muda of Selangor, DYTM Tengku Amir Shah Ibni Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.
Lets hope that UMW Toyota Motor has more glorious years under its belt. The company has indeed contributed so much to the state of Selangor with its many facilities. When it comes to nation building, it would be good if more companies would invest in Malaysia like Toyota does. Do note that the Toyota group has many investments spread among its many companies - Perodua, Daihatsu and Hino are part of this large conglomerate and all have investments in Malaysia. So on a personal note, kudos to Toyota in a big way.
