Volvo Car Malaysia has officially introduced its flagship premium sedan, the new Volvo S90 T8 Twin EngineTwo. It comes with two different trim levels - the Inscription and Inscription Plus with prices starting from RM368,888 onwards (and with a slightly lower introductory price right now).
The launch was witnessed by Tan Sri Peter Chin Fah Kui (right), Chairman of the Malaysian Green Technology Corporation, co-organiser of IGEM 2017 (where the launch was held). Here with Lennart Stegland, Managing Director of Volvo Car Malaysia
The T8 Twin Engine is Volvo’s hybrid electrified vehicle powertrain which combines a turbocharged and supercharged petrol engine that powers the front and an electric motor driving the rear axle making the car a totally unique hybrid all-wheel drive car. The S90 T8's powertrain makes 407 hp (235 kW internal combustion engine + 65 kW electric motor) and 640 Nm (400 Nm internal combustion engine + 240 Nm electric motor) of torque. The best thing is that since it is locally assembled (CKD) as well as being a certified energy efficient vehicle with electrification, it sells from a relatively affordable price of RM368,888 onwards (but with an introductory price which is lower at this moment).
Two different trim levels can be had for this top of the range Volvo car - the Inscription and Inscription Plus. The only difference between the two is that the higher priced Plus has Premium Sound by Bowers & Wilkins; a 19-speaker 1,400 watts Class-D amplified sound system and air suspension for the self-levelling rear suspension. Both cars feature Volvo's IntelliSafe City Safety Technology which combines automatic breaking functionality and collision avoidance systems to cover a range of potential accident scenarios and assist in keeping you safe.
The S90 T8's City Safety’s functionality is further extended with Large Animal Detection, designed to help avoid or mitigate collisions with large animals such as moose. An auto-steer functionality which helps to keep you on the road, called Run Off Road Mitigation, has also been added to the T8.
Aside from this, the S90 T8 also has IntelliSafe Assist as standard. This includes Adaptive Cruise Control and Distance Alert and the advanced semi-autonomous drive feature, Pilot Assist. The Pilot Assist functionality gives gentle steering input to keep the car properly aligned within lane markings up to motorway speeds of around 130 km/h and no longer needs to follow another car. Volvo Car states that their Pilot Assist is another step towards making their cars to be able to drive autonomously.
Both S90 T8 Twin Engine variants can achieve 0 – 100 km/h in 4.8s and it has a pure electric range of 50 km from a 10.4 kWh hybrid battery (according to EUregulations). So the car is darn fast and also super economical.
The S90 T8 Twin Engine Inscription and Inscription Plus is priced at RM368,888 and RM388,888 (on-the-
road without insurance, including all applicable taxes) respectively. As an introductory offer, orders placed
before 31 October 2017 for both variants will enjoy a special price of RM348,888 and 368,888
respectively. Aside from what has been mentioned above, more details are listed in the press release below.
One other important bit of news is that this locally assembled S90 T8 Twin Engine is the second Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) to be exported to select markets within the South East Asian (ASEAN) region after the XC90 T8 Twin Engine. The first country that this premium sedan will be exported to within the ASEAN region is Thailand.
Volvo Cars has plans to export its full model range to 5 markets from Malaysia including Indonesia, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. A further 2 markets (Laos and Cambodia) has been earmarked as potential export markets as well. Volvo Car Malaysia projected that the export volume will be close to 5,000 cars per annum in the next few years. This makes them one of the few carmakers who are trying to utilise Malaysia’s strategic position within ASEAN (which has a population base of nearly 600 million people), to become a hub for the production of Energy Efficient Vehicles (EEVs) to the ASEAN region.
It is always good to see the good folks at Volvo Cars. You hear of such ambitious plans for Malaysia through them and also through a few other manufacturers that have decided to use Malaysia as a platform to re-export vehicles (Subaru is the other one making in-roads in this field). These companies see that there is potential here. If not, this sort of news would not have happened. It is obvious, isn't it?

PRESS RELEASE
Introducing the new Volvo S90 T8 Twin Engine
KUALA LUMPUR – Volvo Car Malaysia today introduced its flagship premium sedan, the new Volvo S90 T8 Twin Engine to its product line-up and strengthening its offer within the most traditional segment in the automotive industry.
The T8 Twin Engine is Volvo’s innovative approach to powertrain design – combining a turbocharged and
supercharged petrol engine that powers the front and an electric motor driving the rear axle, producing an
impressive combined output of 407 hp (235 kW internal combustion engine + 65 kW electric motor) and
640 Nm (400 Nm internal combustion engine + 240 Nm electric motor) of torque.
This has been made possible with the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform that was designed to
incorporate electrified powertrains from the start which sees the hybrid battery placed in the tunnel of the
car replacing the propeller shaft.
“Our unique approach to engine design stems from the need to deliver uncompromising performance,
efficiency and space by having the hybrid components cleverly integrated into the design, differentiating
us from the other hybrids in the market,” said Lennart Stegland, Managing Director of Volvo Car Malaysia.
Stegland explains that the placement of the battery in the tunnel, lowers the centre of gravity for the car
and improves handling. The other benefit of placing the battery in that position is that it frees up precious
cargo space and also protects the battery from external impacts.
When it came to the performance of the S90 T8 Twin Engine, the figures speak for themselves: the S90
T8 Twin Engine achieves 0 – 100 km/h in only 4.8s whilst the pure electric range (according to EU
regulations) of 50 km from a 10.4 kWh hybrid battery.
The S90 T8 Twin Engine will be offered in two different trim levels: the Inscription and Inscription Plus
with the latter debuting the much sought-after, Premium Sound by Bowers & Wilkins; a 19-speaker sound system that supplies an astonishing 1,400 watts through a 12-channel Class-D amplifier.
“Just like everything we do at Volvo, Bowers & Wilkins has been a part of our product development since the beginning; this collaboration translates to the best audio reproduction within the automotive industry,” adds Stegland.
Bowers & Wilkins’ core technologies are used throughout the S90 T8 Twin Engine Inscription Plus – from the Aluminium Nautilus™ tweeters and Kevlar® midrange drivers to the long-throw ‘Technora’ woofers. All this could be enjoyed using the three especially created sound presets: Studio, Stage and Concert Hall.
The S90 T8 Twin Engine Inscription Plus will also receive air suspensions with an electronically controlled
dampener system (Four-C) which automatically keeps the rear at the correct level, irrespective of load
and adapts to the road and driving conditions.
Both trim levels will share a number of standard equipment which includes Park Assist with Park Assist
Pilot, 360˚ Surround View Camera, Blind Sport Information System (BLIS) with Cross Traffic Alert (CTA),
Lane Keeping Aid (LKA), 2-stage Integrated Booster Seats, Comfort Seats with Fine Nappa Leather and
the handmade Orrefors ® Crystal gear lever.
The locally-produced S90 T8 Twin Engine is the second Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) to roll out
of Volvo’s Shah Alam production facility after it had received significant investments to assemble models
built on the SPA platform which underpins Volvo’s large models.
Malaysia will also produce and export the S90 T8 Twin Engine to select markets in the region, following in
the steps of the XC90 T8 Twin Engine. This firmly secures a place for the Shah Alam plant within Volvo’
future electrification strategy which will see all future models produced with some level of hybridisation.
IntelliSafe
Volvo’s leadership in the field of automotive safety is confirmed in the S90 T8 Twin Engine. Volvo’s City
Safety Technology, standard on all Volvo models, combines automatic breaking functionality and
collision avoidance systems to cover a range of potential accident scenarios and help keep you safe.
City Safety’s functionality is further extended with Large Animal Detection, designed to help avoid or
mitigate collisions with large animals such as moose. An auto-steer functionality which helps to keep you
on the road, called Run Off Road Mitigation, has also been added.
Semi-autonomous drive
The S90 T8 Twin Engine launches with IntelliSafe Assist as standard. This includes Adaptive Cruise
Control and Distance Alert and the advanced semi-autonomous drive feature, Pilot Assist.
The Pilot Assist functionality gives gentle steering input to keep the car properly aligned within
lane markings up to motorway speeds of around 130 km/h and no longer needs to follow another
car. Pilot Assist is another step towards full autonomous drive – a key innovation area for Volvo,
and one which is highlighted at the show with the Concept 26 display, which envisions how a car
interior could look and feel in a fully autonomous Volvo.
The New Volvo S90 T8 Twin Engine Poised for Export Markets
KUALA LUMPUR – Volvo Car Malaysia today introduced its much-anticipated flagship premium sedan,
the new Volvo S90 T8 Twin Engine, at the International Greentech & Eco Products Exhibition &
Conference (IGEM) at the KLCC Convention Centre.
The new Volvo S90 T8 Twin Engine, the second Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) to be locally-
assembled and exported to select markets within the region after the XC90 T8 Twin Engine.
The S90 T8 Twin Engine represents the pinnacle of Volvo’s engineering prowess incorporating industry-
leading hybrid and active safety technologies that were developed to meet the future demands.
“The S90 T8 Twin Engine was made possible with the company’s ongoing USD 11 billion transformation
plan, including the in-house development of the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform which
underpins all large Volvo models,” said Lennart Stegland, Managing Director of Volvo Car Malaysia.
The modular SPA platform allows for engineers and designers to introduce a wide range of cars,
powertrains, electrical systems and technologies with different levels of complexities within the same
architecture, generating significant economies of scale.
The launch was witnessed by Tan Sri Peter Chin Fah Kui, Chairman of the Malaysian Green Technology
Corporation, co-organiser of IGEM 2017. Speaking at the launch, he said, “Malaysia is a strong
proponent of sustainable mobility as it is the future of the transport industry. IGEM is proud to have
hosted the launch of the new Volvo Car Malaysia’s new entry into the sustainable transport market. I am
certain that the new Volvo S90 T8 Twin Engine will convert more drivers into green enthusiasts.”
Produced in Volvo’s Shah Alam facility, the new S90 T8 Twin Engine is the result of continual
investments made by Volvo that spans infrastructure development, technology transfers and training of its
local assets in recognition of Malaysia’s strategic importance for Volvo.
Volvo Cars have made major investments in the Malaysian plant to modernise production and secure its
place in Volvo’s future electrification strategy. These investments made for the plant are pivotal to as the
brand intends to offer varying levels of hybridisation for all new Volvo models introduced by 2019.
“The Shah Alam production plant was established in 1967 and we have always been consistent in
expanding the capabilities of our local production facility to cater to the growing demand within this region
and beyond,” Stegland adds.
Currently, Volvo Cars will export its full model range to 5 markets from Malaysia including Indonesia,
Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. A further 2 markets (Laos and Cambodia) has been
earmarked as potential export markets as well. Volvo Car Malaysia projected that the export volume will
be close to 5,000 cars per annum in the next few years.
Malaysia’s strategic position within ASEAN (which has a population base of nearly 600 million people),
supportive government policies and agencies and Malaysia’s aspiration to become a hub for Energy
Efficient Vehicles (EEVs) are all contributing factors that bolsters Volvo Cars’ commitment to the country.
