Automotive Industry Opinion: Porsche sold 5,589 cars in South East Asia last year - Malaysia is one of their key markets

Porsche sold about 5,589 Cars over in the South East Asian region in 2016. You may think that 5,000 cars is a small number but this is a premium luxury brand. Each car sold would cost an average of RM400,000 to 700,000 with or without high taxes. Multiply that by 5,000 and you see that is is a significant sum.

Do also note that Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia are key drivers in sales growth for the region. What recession you may want to ask? In a supposedly sluggish Malaysian economy, Porsche S.E.A has come out with an announcement that Malaysia is a vital market for its premium car sales. This is somewhat like its other German counterparts - Mercedes-Benz and BMW who also made announcements that they had record sales here in Malaysia. This bucks the trend again.

I believe the bulk of the Malaysian sales are the Cayenne and the Macan SUVs with a smattering of the other models - the 911s, Panameras and then only the Boxter and the Cayman. Malaysia is predominantly a SUV crowd. Big tall cars sell here. But yes, people are buying brand new Porsches and not only the grey AP imports. There is money here in Malaysia which some of you are not seeing obviously.

Of course some of you may be saying that the rich are getting richer. It could be the case of course. But this also should be more reason why you should all start becoming more enterprising. There is money to be made in the region. It is time to try capitalise on this. If you have talent start grooming it and always look for avenues. Of course, work hard and smart. That Porsche could be within your grasp in a few years time. Or not. But you could end up with something just as good. You never know.
