PROTON RECEIVES ACCREDITATION AS A CENTRE FOR NATIONAL DUAL TRAINING SYSTEM (SLDN) FOR SKILLS TRAINING

Sometime before the Chinese New Year, Proton received accreditation by the Ministry of Human Resources Malaysia as well as from the Department of Skills Development, Malaysia as a centre for the National Dual Training System programme conducted by the Government of Malaysia.

The Human Resources Minister, YB Dato’ Sri Richard Riot Anak Jaem, had earlier handed out the Malaysian Skills Advanced Diploma (“Diploma Lanjutan Kemahiran Malaysia” or "DLKM") to 30 recipients and witnessed the signing of an MoU between PROTON and JPK for this long term development of skilled workers programme. Another 25 individuals were also awarded with Yayasan PROTON scholarships to pursue their Malaysian Skills Certificate (“Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia” or "SKM").

The SKM is a formal nationally recognised certificate issued by the Government to individuals who have achieved the required capabilities to practise and are equipped with competencies to perform tasks and functions for employment.  Adopted in the 10th Malaysia Plan as the single Skills / Vocational Certification for the country, there are now 13 recognised and approved schemes of services by the Public Service Department of Malaysia, for skilled position in the civil service. To enhance the recognition of skills qualification, the SKM will become a mandatory qualification to specific and selected jobs.

I think this is a splendid piece of news. My personal thoughts about Proton is that the company should be utilised by the Government as a technical incubator for local talent. It should not be taken as face value, i.e a company that is not worth it as it loses money and is the reason that car prices are high (actually this isn't the case. A lot of car companies can already price their cars lower but do not do so. Look at all those cash rebates out there, those that come close to RM10K, RM20K...do you think car companies can give you such incentives if the price of cars are already still priced higher than usual?). There are two or more sides to any story. This is oneside which I choose to talk to you about.

So Proton should be used as a technical and technological incubator for our people. It isn't about churning out business degrees, doctors, lawyers, accountants but also people who actually help maintain our machinery. This is all part of it. The Government also wants to have a million over new skilled personnel come 2020. This is part of it. It also creates new job avenues for people. More people with proper jobs, the better.
