The All new Peugeot 408 makes it to Malaysia - Prices start at a very reasonable RM146,055!

This, to me, is a breath of fresh air. The all-new Peugeot 408 has been launched and it is actually something nice to look at and something with a dollop of heritage behind it. This comes after a slew of brand new car launches from brands that are essentially new and from start ups. It is Available in three variants - Allure, Premium and GT with prices starting from RM146,055, is proudly assembled in Malaysia from Stellantis Gurun, Kedah and looks darn good for a C segment crossover fastback car.

PEUGEOT has finally launched the locally-assembled all-new PEUGEOT 408 (which explains the very competitive pricing). This generation's 408 has unique styling and is packed with a lot of engineering and technology, the all-new Peugeot 408 signifies a new start for PEUGEOT in the Malaysian automotive market and is also the first Peugeot model to be launched by Stellantis Malaysia, which is basically the brand now distributing the cars themselves rather than just having local partners previously.

The all-new Peugeot 408 is somewhat of a radical change compared to its predecessor, with its unique fastback, crossover styling which paid off as it won the 2023 Red Dot design of the year award. The stylish physique of the all-new Peugeot 408 is based on ‘The Language of Attraction’, a new manifesto that expresses PEUGEOT brand’s renaissance combining three core values of Allure, Emotion and Excellence.

Daniel Gonzalez, Chief Operating Officer, ASEAN and General Distributors, Stellantis said, "The all-new PEUGEOT 408 is a truly unique model that is unexpected from every angle. Its progressive features have already won the hearts of consumers and awards globally. In the ASEAN region, the 408 makes up 30% of PEUGEOT cars sold in Vietnam and Taiwan – a testament to its allure. We’re thrilled to bring this latest icon, assembled in Stellantis Gurun, Kedah, to our Malaysian customers.”

Jamie Francis Morais, Managing Director of Stellantis Malaysia said, “The new all-PEUGEOT 408 is our pride and joy being the first PEUGEOT launched under Stellantis Malaysia. Being a car that’s truly one-of-a-kind, the all-new PEUGEOT 408 places great emphasis for discerning customers looking at something beyond mainstream within the C-Segment. Available in three variants, these new additions to our local production line underscore our commitment to expand our local footprint that is also proudly assembled in Malaysia. Simultaneously, the all-new PEUGEOT 408 marks a fresh chapter in reinvigorating PEUGEOT as the ultimate go-to brand that offers a fascinating blend of avantgarde designs and technology in the country.”

On a personal note,

The 408 represents a come back of a well known brand which has been somewhat neglected over the past decade by the previous distributors, the Naza Group. The folks who ran Bermaz were more like a caretaker rather than an actual distributor some I don't really count them as being detrimental to the brand. So, a brand that had so much potential here can have another chance.

As for the heritage, this was a brand were most professionals used in the 1970s to the mid 1990s. I remember back then most doctors ended up with a 504 or a 505, some business executives swore by the 405s and 406s and even in the 1970s and 1980s, we still see 404 taxis plying routes in smaller towns in Malaysia. I used to remember sitting in one from the railway station in Taiping to my house or to the market and home. My grandmother's car was also a 204 in the 1970s and early 1980s before she changed to a Mazda.

I also remember one good thing about Peugeots back then. They rode magnificently. Even the last Peugeot I tested waaaay back in 2016, the 508 THP was actually a very nice car for what it is. The ride was still good as was the NVH. Maybe the reason it didn't sell well was the fact that it was pricey vs the Toyota Camry of the time and the local distributors were faced with fuel issues due to lack of proper petrol back then (lack of Euro 4 petrol was actually the main problem for direct injected cars then).

Anyway, this new 408 in all of its forms is good looking. The best is the GT of course with its large 20inch wheels and different rear lights. And panoramic moonroof. But it will cost you close to RM200K, of course. But this is a fully specced up 218hp 300 Nm petrol powered 1.6liter turbocharged fastback. I cannot think of a petrol powered car that gives you so much horses for under RM200K, or under RM150K if you bought the 408 Allure. So much for a very reasonable price.

Maybe some may think of long term maintenance. I think the 7 year extended warranty or 200,000km is industry leading and it should offer the owner peace of mind. Use this equipment filled 408 for seven years then after that, sell it and buy another car. All new cars come with so much technology inside that this could be the best way in terms of car ownership.

While the 7 year warranty is interesting, it is how the PEUGEOT package is to me these days. It has brand heritage, good looks, good equipment specs, that 218hp 300Nm engine for highway jaunts and that affordable RM146K onwards pricing. What's not to really like?

I actually like it and would consider this IF I were really car shopping for my own.

PRODUCT SUMMARY - PEUGEOT 408 ALLURE, PREMIUM AND GT

From the front, the all-new PEUGEOT 408 introduces the brand's new emblem, nestled as the centrepiece that harmoniously blends in with the body-coloured vertical slats of the grille. Lighting up the road ahead comes from the all-new PEUGEOT Signature Light – a distinctive, full-LED headlamp cluster incorporating a single, vertical fang-shaped daytime running light strip. The GT trim brings in the latest Matrix LED lighting technology, which features an automatic beam function for optimum visibility in the dark.

Moving from the dynamic side profile towards its slanting roofline, the all-new PEUGEOT 408 hinges are recessed into “Cat Ears” to create an optimal aerodynamic corridor towards the boot lid spoiler. The all-new PEUGEOT 408 boasts a distinctive 3D three-claw, full LED rear that is further accentuated by its inverted cut-out of the rear bumper. This design element, along with the other innovative features, ensures the all-new PEUGEOT 408 turns heads and leaves a lasting impression.

Based on the multi-energy EMP2 (Efficient Modular Platform), the all-new PEUGEOT 408 measures 4,687 millimetres long, 1,859 millimetres wide, and 1,487 millimetres in overall height. With a wheelbase of 2,787 millimetres and a raised ground clearance of 189 millimetres, it gives it a commanding presence on the road.

With class-leading performance credentials combined with a dynamic fastback profile, the all-new PEUGEOT 408 is neither a sedan nor a SUV – it sits in a segment of its own as it defies categorisation.  Its sharp facets and design elements define the car's silhouette, which is especially noticeable at the rear, the end of the roof, and the base of the wings.
