I am (trying to be) back to publishing regular original posts after a short holiday and after watching Star Wars: The Force Awakens a couple of times. So let's start with an interesting car spotted for sale - A 2004 Nissan March IMPUL 112S.
This is a unique car. It was brought into Malaysia as an IMPUL instead of as a Nissan. Somehow, in those days, the Malaysian authorities allowed various importers to circumvent the authorised dealers. We had IMPUL Nissans and we had WALD Volkswagens. We also had one or two other brands that were actually tuning houses unlike those with proper VIN (Vehicle Indentification Numbers) that would actually classify these companies as manufacturers. Brabus, Alpina and Ruf are tuning houses that actually have their own complete cars with their own VIN numbers aside from selling tuning kits so they are actually different from this Nissan March aka IMPUL 112s sold in Malaysia from 2004 to about 2006/7.
So why is this car interesting? The base car is a cutesy looking Nissan March/Micra K10 series that was sold from 2002 to 2010. What IMPUL (or what the local importer with the IMPUL dealership) added was a pretty stunning bodykit that turned the cute girl March into something a boy racer wouldn't mind driving.
Front and Rear lower spoilers, side skirts, wheel arches and a whopping goalpost of a rear spoiler were added. Wheels and tyres were upsized from 15inches to about 16inches too. There was also an option for IMPUL badged RECARO seats and a MOMO steering wheel which you see in this car. So it looked super aggressive. Like a proper Supermini with giant killing abilities....
No. It couldn't even swat a fly. It was sold with a 1.4liter engine that was coupled to a 4 speed automatic transmission. The engine made 98PS and 137Nm torque. You could see 175kmh if you were lucky and a 0-100kmh time of why bother. But what made this car interesting was that it actually looked really good. But it was expensive brand new. The price tag those days was about RM117,000.
You could buy yourself a Honda Civic for the same price. But if you compare it with the officially imported Nissan March at that time, it was cheap. Nissan wanted RM130,000 for the March that was basically sold without any of the goodies you see here.
These days the IMPUL 112S costs under RM30,000 as you can see here. It is actually a good alternative to those who wants to buy a second hand Perodua Myvi. In terms of space it is almost the same. But in terms of street cred, this IMPUL is light years ahead. Of course, the only issue is that this car is now over ten years old and it would be pretty hard to get a hire purchase loan for it. How about personal loans from the bank then?
Whatever the case is, this car has unique looks, and came from a time when importers tried to be smart, much to the chagrin of the manufacturers whilst we benefited. Now since its much cheaper used, we can benefit again.
