Mercedes-Benz Services Malaysia (MBSM), part of Mercedes-Benz Malaysia, believe that success and social responsibility go hand-in-hand are working together with the non-profit organisation, Make-A-Wish, to create wonderful memories for two children who have been diagnosed with cancer.
Make-A-Wish's basic purpose is to try grant the wishes of critically ill children, giving them hope, strength and joy. The two children here, Fikri(10 years old) and Zhi Liang (14 years old) were introduced to them by their doctors who had asked if Make-A-Wish could work in tandem with them by granting their wishes as they battle their life threatening illnesses. Mercedes-Benz Services Malaysia had come forward to provide support in helping to realise Fikri and Zhi Liang’s wishes to have a special day/weekend for each of them.
Fikri (pictured above) was only recently diagnosed with T-Cell Lymphoma. He has always dreamt of dining in the sky with his family atop the Kuala Lumpur (KL) Tower. Since it was quite a simple little wish, MBSM and Make-A-Wish Malaysia had decided to make it even more special. They planned an exciting two-day agenda for him and his family which including a Mercedes-Benz S-Class driving experience, a staycation with a Lego-themed birthday party courtesy of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Kuala Lumpur, a learning excursion to the Petrosains Discovery Centre, and the ultimate dining experience at Atmosphere 360, a Revolving Restaurant in the KL Tower. Definitely a memorable experience for the child and his family.
(front row, third from right) Zhi Liang with his family and Mercedes-Benz Services Malaysia and Make-A-Wish Malaysia volunteers, has set his sights on becoming a professional translator.
Zhi Liang was diagnosed with Multisystem Langerhan Cell Histocytosis, a rare form of cancer. Yet, he remains positive and has set his sights on becoming a professional translator, specialising in Mandarin, Japanese and Thai translations. MBSM, recognising his talents and ambition, has officially appointed Zhi Liang as their very own translator complete with an appointment letter. Zhi Liang showcased his skill by helping to translate MBSM’s financing campaign from Thai to English. Rewarding his impressive efforts, Zhi Liang was presented an iPad complete with a translation app, a surprise interactive learning experience in Kidzania courtesy of Themed Attractions Resorts and Hotels and a trip to his favourite Japanese anime series, “One Piece”, at an exhibition held in Isetan Store in Kuala Lumpur. Zhi Liang’s excitement was further amplified as he was also granted the opportunity to visit a local animation studio to try his hand at developing animation.
Each year, MBSM gives back to the community. It invests in community outreach efforts including monetary support and employee volunteering to benefit local communities and the environment. Past outreach programmes include restoration work in Sg. Pisang’s popular waterfall area and the Orang Asli habitat in Gombak, reconstruction of homes for indigenous families with Habitat for Humanity, A Day For Children Project with Ephratha Home as well as supporting underpriviledged communities with medical care, eye check-ups, children’s education programmes, and more.
Large companies usually do give back to the communities where they are based. Their social outreach and social responsibility exercises are usually one of the ways they give back to all of us in one way of the other.
