As part of its 2nd Anniversary: Passion To Drive event was held at Bamboo Hills in Kuala Lumpur. This was a small gathering for members of the media where , MG Motor Malaysia celebrated a strong start to 2026, mentioned key product milestones, growing customer engagement, and continued expansion plans as the brand strengthens its presence in the Malaysian market. While they have been somewhat quiet in terms of news releases over the past couple of months, this highlighted what they have been doing, mentioning future plans as well as announcing some changes to the latest, 2026 MG S5 EV in its locally assembled, CKD form.
The newly launched MGS5 EV CKD, now available in Malaysia at RM116,900, continues to be a key focus for the brand as it brings accessible electric mobility to more Malaysians. The MGS5 EV is now available for viewing and test drive at all MG showrooms nationwide, with special launch promotion worth up to RM9,000. The 2026 Model year MG S5 EV features a WLTP range of up to 446kM on a full charge from its 151Kw/350Nm torque drivetrain (all figures from the LUX variant). With the proper charger, it can charge from 10% to 80% in about 20 minutes and now features ventilated front seats inside for the LUX variant. The MGS5 EV also features 7/8 year warranty with a set mileage (either or) for the car and the drivetrain/battery also - check out the photo below for details.
The first quarter of 2026 saw MG Motor Malaysia build solid momentum across multiple fronts. Among the highlights was the MG Cyberster being awarded Performance Car of the Year by MARii, reinforcing MG’s growing reputation for delivering electric vehicles that combine innovation, design and driving excitement. They also mentioned the strong partnership and alignment through MG Motor Malaysia’s Dealer Conference and Chinese New Year celebration in February, bringing together its nationwide dealer network with a shared focus on growth, collaboration and customer engagement.
A key milestone for the brand came in March of this year with the MGS5 EV CKD Roll-Out Ceremony at the EP Manufacturing Berhad (EPMB) facility in Melaka, marking the official roll-out of MG’s first locally assembled electric vehicle in Malaysia. This milestone represents the next phase of MG’s localisation journey and reinforces its long-term commitment to local assembly, technology transfer and the development of Malaysia’s EV ecosystem.
The brand also rolled out its “Experience British Driving Dynamics” test drive campaign, inviting more Malaysians to experience MG vehicles firsthand. Yes, if those who remember the 'British' MG days, which lasted till the early 2000s, the marque was popular with making proper British sports cars like the MG BGT, the MGA, the TF and more. Now if you thought that MG was only a sports car maker, note the Magnette sedan from the 1950s and even the last of the line Rover MG sedans from the 1990s and 2000s. So if you put it this way, a SUV bearing the MG badge like the MGS5 carries on the lineage.
So back to what MG Motor Malaysia has been doing here in terms of expanding the marque here. MG Motor Malaysia has continued to engage customers through a series of festive and retail activation, including showroom campaigns and dealer open house activities during Chinese New Year and Hari Raya. There have been roadshows at key lifestyle and retail destinations such as Desa ParkCity, Quayside Mall, The Curve, Starling Mall, and IOI City Mall, allowing consumers to explore MG’s model range and brand proposition up close.
On the international front, MG’s broader technology story continues to evolve. At MG Tech Day in Frankfurt, the brand unveiled MG Hybrid+ and the world’s first mass-produced semi-solid-state battery, highlighting its ongoing product and technology ambitions.
In addition to its product and brand milestones, MG Motor Malaysia recorded strong sales growth in Q1 2026, rising 57% compared to Q4 2025 and 39% year-on-year versus Q1 2025, reflecting continued market interest and growing confidence in the brand.
“Q1 has been a meaningful and encouraging start to the year for MG in Malaysia,” said Emory Qi, Managing Director of SAIC Motor Malaysia. “From product recognition to the local roll-out of the MGS5 EV CKD, these milestones reflect the strength of our product line-up and our long-term commitment to the Malaysian market.”
As for the near future, MG Motor Malaysia will participate in the upcoming Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS), where the brand is set to showcase its latest developments and future direction. Adding to the significance of MG’s presence at the show, Jozef Kaban, Vice President of Global Design at SAIC Motor, will also be present to share insights into MG’s design philosophy and evolving global design language.
Looking ahead, MG Motor Malaysia will continue to strengthen its network and aftersales capabilities. Upcoming expansions include the addition of MG 3S centres in Kuantan and Rawang, further enhancing accessibility for customers across key regions.
The brand also continues to invest in aftersales excellence, with up to 11 body and paint facilities nationwide, ensuring customers receive comprehensive and high-quality support throughout their ownership journey.
With a strong start to the year and continued developments ahead, MG Motor Malaysia remains focused on building a sustainable presence in the local market through compelling products, meaningful customer engagement and ongoing network expansion.
