140 Years. 140 Places.” The facelifted S-Class global tour celebrating the enduring legacy of Mercedes-Benz has made its Malaysian stop

The recently launched, facelifted Mercedes-Benz S-Class has made is to Malaysia. However, this isn't the official launch of the model here but three S-Classes that are going on a 140-location global drive marking 140 Years of Innovation since Carl Benz’s patent, which is also the first automobile in the world.. Mercedes-Benz calls the journey that commemorates a legacy built on innovation, craftsmanship, and an unwavering commitment to shaping the future of mobility. Personally, I call it a grand tour that intends to showcase the reliability and continent crushing ability of the newly facelifted W223 S-Class, and I do believe that it will succeed in doing so.

The event, which was graced by the presence of HRH Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj, the Sultan of Selangor. showcases the brand's past and current cars. Being the first country outside Germany to locally assemble the iconic Mercedes-Benz S-Class, a stop in this global tour is a testament to Malaysia’s world-class talent and its strategic place in the global Mercedes-Benz family.

“140 Years of Innovation for Mercedes-Benz is not just a milestone, it is a testament to what happens when passion, precision, and purpose come together. For Malaysia, this celebration holds a special meaning. Through the ‘140 Years. 140 Places.’ journey, we are proud to celebrate and share the rich legacy and heritage of our brand with Malaysians — a legacy built over decades through Mercedes-Benz’s enduring commitment to fostering meaningful and lasting relationships with its customers.” said Martin Schulz, CEO & President, Mercedes-Benz Cars Malaysia & Head of Region, Mercedes-Benz Cars Southeast Asia

The event marks the first ever appearance of this facelifted W223 Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The luxury sedan features an extensive upgrade compared to the previous car, with about 50 percent new parts and styling changes. First revealed on  January 29, 2026. This refresh stands as the most extensive in the model's history for a single generation, with over 2,700 components accounting for half of the entire vehicle being completely redesigned or re-engineered.

The updated front end showcases a larger, illuminated grille detailed with three-pointed star slats. Mirroring the W214 E-Class design language, this grille flows directly into the redesigned headlights, which integrate dual-star daytime running lights. In a first for Mercedes-Benz, the iconic three-pointed star hood ornament is now illuminated. The theme continues at the rear, where the updated taillight modules each house three star-shaped elements.

Inside, the facelifted S-Class runs the new MB.OS architecture to manage all onboard electronics. It should be more stable that previous iterations as well as during on the air updates. Aside from that, Mercedes-Benz opted for the MBUX Superscreen over the Hyperscreen setup. This configuration pushes the main displays further back to improve ergonomics while keeping the driver's display separate and more upright for optimal viewing angles. The rear center console now accommodates two fully detachable MBUX remote tablets. Passengers can enjoy native streaming apps  directly on the twin 13.1-inch seatback screens.

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W223) facelift features a significantly revised powertrain lineup, with all engines incorporating a 48-volt mild-hybrid system (MHEV) and integrated starter-generator. The range is divided into updated six-cylinder and eight-cylinder petrol and diesel units, alongside plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), a V12, and an AMG variant

Malaysia should be getting these cars soon. It should be launching here within a couple of months (most likely in fully imported form followed by local Assembly at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Pekan, Pahang. We should be getting the 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six (M256 Evo) petrol engine generating 381 PS (375 hp) and 560 Nm of torque and also a plug in hybrid variant. This has not been confirmed as yet and only a speculation although I spoke to a sales advisor who has stated that he believes the variant above should be coming to Malaysia.

As a note, the 2 white S-Classes in the photos herein are the 4.0liter V8 variants |(4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 (M177/M176) generating 503 to 537 PS (496 to 530 hp) and up to 750 Nm of torque)while the dark blue one is the 3.0liter variant. These three cars are the convoy travelling to the 140 destinations globally.

As stated, Mercedes-Benz wants to prove the durability and reliability of the cars as well as showcase 140 years of innovation.

Beyond innovation: Welcome Home to legacy and heritage

The story of Mercedes-Benz in Malaysia is one that stretches back more than a century, long before showrooms, production plants, or regional headquarters. It is a story of firsts, of milestones earned, and of a relationship between a global brand and a nation that has only grown deeper with time.

It began in the early 20th century, when the Sultan of Johor was believed to be one of the first in Malaya to own a Mercedes-Benz - a moment that quietly set the tone for everything that followed. From those early roads to today, Malaysia's journey with Mercedes-Benz has been one of continuous growth, shared vision, and mutual pride. Official sales had begun in 1951 through Cycle & Carriage. From there, several key milestones followed which helped shape that legacy. By 1968, locally assembled passenger cars marked the beginning of domestic production, and in 1983, Malaysia became the first country in the world after Germany to assemble the S-Class - the Mercedes-Benz 380 SE, reflecting the nation’s growing role in the brand’s global legacy. This momentum continued with the launch of DaimlerChrysler Malaysia in 2003 which later evolved into Mercedes-Benz Malaysia in 2008.

The establishment of the Pekan production plant in 2004 further reinforced Malaysia’s strategic role in the region. In 2023, two major milestones underscored this progress: the rollout of the first locally assembled Mercedes-Benz EQ, the Mercedes-Benz EQS 500 4MATIC, and the production of the 100,000th Mercedes-Benz passenger car at the Pekan facility.

In more recent years, the journey has evolved beyond assembly into innovation and regional leadership. Through the introduction of Mercedes-Benz Parts Logistics Asia-Pacific (MBPLAP) and Mercedes-Benz Tech Malaysia, Malaysia now plays an increasingly integral role in the brand’s regional logistics and digital infrastructure.  Together, they represent a growing footprint that speaks of the brand’s long-term strategic commitment to the country, its capabilities, and its people.

Today, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia continues to strengthen its presence through close collaboration with its six retail partners, delivering exceptional experiences to customers across the country.
