Introducing four new MINI models that showcase the new brand design language of “Charismatic Simplicity”, the new lineup was unveiled at the New MINI Family Launch Event at JioSpace in Petaling Jaya (on till this Sunday. 14th July 2024 - Head over there if you're interested in viewing the new MINIs). This new MINI lineup features two fully electrified models, and this newest generation of MINI marks a significant step towards emission-free urban mobility.

Making its appearance in Malaysia for the first time at the New MINI Family Launch Event is the New MINI Cooper SE. The latest All-Electric member of the New MINI Family continues the success story of the iconic MINI Cooper, which has been the quintessential icon of MINI across generations.
Featured alongside it at the event are three other new-generation MINI models, which were first previewed at the Malaysia Autoshow 2024 – the New All-Electric MINI Countryman SE ALL4, the New MINI John Cooper Works (JCW) Countryman ALL4 and the New MINI Cooper S.
What I find interesting about this latest generation of MINI Cooper is the styling. It still looks familiar as heck and is great that the designers have not changed the overall familiar bodyshape in all the variants. The changes are subtle but you know it is all new. The lines are cleaner inside and out. The exterior is somehow nicer and everything is tucked away neatly. There are no unnecessary character lines and even the rear light cluster seems to be a little more compact. You know it is a MINI Cooper from the roofline, and the round lights.
Inside, it does look like the screen in the middle of the dashboard is much larger than previously and it is indeed cleaned up of any clutter. Of course, some may also ask whether the screen looks huge. It does dominate the cabin and the texture used on the contact surfaces seems unique. The MINI after these many generations has actually never looked as classy as this in my opinion. And that super large floating infotainment screen.....A platter mounted as a screen. Totally large, and it isn't square. So MINI.
As for the Countryman ALL4 variants launched for Malaysia, I have to say that the new crossover large sized MINIs (quite a thought - large sized MINIS) are also styled a little bit better in that these actually look like they are different from the other MINIs in the MINI lineup. The Countryman looks like no other model. It is even more chunky looking that previously and I like that the stylists are braver than before in giving the Country a more chunky look to the car. I think having more aggressive , squared off styling is what is needed, albeit a little fussy here and there compared to the Cooper range of cars. But I seriously can't complain as it does work However, in terms of the interior., it is pretty much the same in that I see great use of materials yet the look is cleaner and neater than before. Overall, the Countryman hits the right spots in terms of differentiation between model ranges.

The highlight of the New MINI Family Launch Event, the unveiling of the New MINI Cooper SE showcases a puristic design that continues to honour the brand’s heritage. From the front, the new octagonal front grille features intricate contouring, providing a more striking focal point. Notably, the grille houses the smallest radar sensor among all BMW Group models. Adding another modern touch are the LED headlights with high-beam assistant – which come equipped with three distinct, selectable light signatures, each culminating in their own unique welcome/goodbye animation.
Moving onto the side, short overhangs and a short bonnet, juxtaposed against a long wheelbase makes up the silhouette of the New MINI Cooper SE. Taut surfaces and define shoulders create a more athletic body shape. Meanwhile, a more minimalistic approach, evoking “Charismatic Simplicity”, brings modernity to the overall design, seen in the flush door openers and absence of Wheel Arch Trims or traditional Side Scuttles. This in particular also allows the 18-inch Night Flash spoke 2-tone wheels to stand out. Lastly, an ultra-clean surface treatment accentuates the prominence of the body colour, as well as the individualisation effect of the contrast roof and mirror caps in white.
Feel-Good Ambience, with Just the Essentials.
The interior of the New MINI Cooper SE shines the spotlight on the essentials, featuring fewer component parts – but each cleverly designed and with high quality in mind. From the driver’s seat, a three-spoke sport steering wheel in Vescin greets the driver, courtesy of the standard inclusion of the Favoured Trim. The trim also features a two-tone houndstooth pattern in Grey and Beige, which furnishes the dashboard’s knitted textile. Slim air vents on the dashboard further accentuate a sleek yet accommodating design. Meanwhile, a MINI Head-Up display provides all relevant content directly to the driver’s line of sight. The dashboard, on the driver’s side, otherwise features no additional instrument panel, opening up the view ahead.
Making the centrepiece of the cabin, a round OLED display, measuring 240mm and featuring a touch-optimised interface consolidates the various control elements. Surrounding it are curved surfaces adorned with warm materials to foster a cosy, pleasant overall atmosphere. Meanwhile, the redesigned MINI toggle bar houses driving functions in an ergonomically positioned layout, while below it, a redesigned centre console, which makes way for increased storage capacity and a notably enhanced sense of spaciousness, adds to the ergonomics and comfort within the cabin.
Adding to the ambience are the MINI Experience Modes, which uses specific light graphics to enhance the immersive driving experience, as well as the Harman Kardon surround sound system. Other standard features of the interior are Vescin sport seats, electric seat adjustment with memory, headliner anthracite, the interior and exterior mirror package, interior rear-view mirror with automatic anti-dazzle function, comfort access system and Comfort Package Plus.

The New MINI Cooper SE delivers a crisp 218 hp and 330 Nm of torque, bringing the All-Electric, 3- Door model from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.7 seconds, capped at a top speed of 170 km/h. In comparison, the petrol-powered New MINI Cooper S delivers a 204 hp output 300 Nm of torque, outstanding in its own right and courtesy of a dual-petrol injection system that combines port injection and direct injection.
As for driving dynamics, the New MINI Cooper SE benefits from an enhanced track width and wheelbase, alongside a spring and damper configuration finely tuned to deliver lively handling. A combination of heightened steering accuracy and improved targeting precision is enhanced further by excellent roll stability. To maximise the electrified go-kart sensation in the New MINI Cooper SE, the battery is positioned to lower the centre of gravity. Other intricate design decisions include optimising weight distribution and incorporating a direct steering ratio along a compact steering wheel. Meanwhile, optimising tyre width improves its lateral dynamics and grip. This results in a delightful, iconic go-kart experience, which is further achieved via highly preloaded stabilisers and Servotronic steering.
With a gross battery capacity of 54.2 kWh, the New MINI Cooper SE achieves a zero-emissions range of between 387 to 402 kilometres on a single charge, ensuring seamless and eco-conscious journeys. The battery of the New MINI Cooper SE can be topped up with an AC Charger at 11 kW, while DC Charging allows up to 95 kW – the latter which brings the battery from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in just under 30 minutes.
Minimal Footprint, Maximum Safety.
Similar to the New MINI Cooper S, the New MINI Cooper SE visualises the functions of all driver assistance systems in real time via the MINI Interaction Unit, showing which function is currently active, resulting in maximum safety and comfort. Equipped as standard for the New MINI Cooper SE are the Driving Assistant and Parking Assistant Plus, with the former including Lane Change Warning with warning when turning and active lane return, Lane Departure Warning with active steering intervention, Speed Limit Info, Manual Speed Limit Assist, Cruise Control with braking function, Front Collision Warning with brake intervention, Evasion Assistant, Rear Crossing Traffic Warning with brake intervention, Rear-end Collision Prevention, and Exit Warning. On the other hand, Parking Assistant Plus comes with Park Assist, which parks and exits the vehicle in parallel and perpendicular parking spaces, Active Park Distance Control, Reversing Assist Camera with panoramic rear view, Reversing Assistant, Parking View, Remote 3D View, Drive Recorder and Anti-Theft Recorder.
Besides that, the optional additional driver assistance feature – the Driving Assistant Plus will also be available to the New MINI Cooper SE, offering Active cruise control with Stop&Go, Steering and Lane Control Assistant, Manual and Automatic Speed Limit Assistant.
A Leap into a Digital Age.
As with the other members of the New MINI Family, the New MINI Cooper SE features the New
MINI Operating System 9, characterised by a new user interface aesthetic that seamlessly merges
functional and emotional elements in a distinctive MINI style. The operating system powers a new
immersive, digitalised experience through the revolutionary MINI Interaction Unit. Meanwhile, the
MINI Intelligent Personal Assistant presents MINI’s first fully fledged voice assistant, enabling voice-
controlled navigation, telephony entertainment and numerous other vehicle functions.
Besides that, the MINI App is also available, providing access to many new functions. These include Remote 3D View, generated via vehicle cameras taking pictures of the parked MINI’s surroundings, Remote Engine Start that starts the MINI’s engine automatically and brings the car to the desired temperature before boarding, MyTrips which provides information on the driver’s most recent journeys and driving style, and other new functions relating to e-mobility, such as start/stop charging and setting a desired charge level. Through the MINI App, the MINI Digital Key Plus is also available, transforming a smartphone into a vehicle key.
The comprehensive MINI Connected Package is also available via the MINI Connected Store,
providing access to a constantly evolving variety of practical and entertaining apps all tailored to
enrich one’s journey. Notably, for the New MINI Cooper SE, the comprehensive MINI Maps
Package, which includes features such as 3D visualisation and MINI Navigation AR, can be
particularly useful for generating a charging optimised route upon entering the destination.

Legend Grey, Sunny Side Yellow, Midnight Black II, British Racing Green and Melting Silver, with
interior colour Nightshade Blue. The New MINI Cooper S comes in exterior colours Ocean Wave
Green, Legend Grey, Nanuq White and Chili Red, and interior colour in a combined Black and Grey,
