5 Door Suzuki Jimny launched in Malaysia - 5 Colour variants and a price starting from RM199,950!!! Also Naza Eastern have expanded the Suzuki dealer network in Malaysia

Earlier today, Naza Eastern Motors Sdn Bhd, the official distributor of Suzuki cars in Malaysia has launched the 5-door variant of the very popular Suzuki Jimny compact 4x4. It will be priced from RM199,950.00 onwards (before insurance or optional gear).

First launched by Suzuki globally in early 2023, the 5 door variant marks a step forward in the Jimny model as this is the first ever 5 door Jimny to be produced. It has always been a 2/3 door compact SUV/4x4 and now, in its 4th generation gets 2 more doors so that one can easily get in and out of the rear seats with its new rear doors. Oh, it is also longer in wheelbase making it actually suitable for carrying people over longer distances too. But more of that later.

Naza Automotive Group CEO, Rizal Jailan emphasized the strategic importance of the new 5 door variant, he said, “The introduction of the 5-door Jimny underscores our commitment to diversifying our product portfolio with profitable niche models that meet evolving automotive trends. This move aligns with our broader strategy to solidify our market presence and cater to the increasing demand for compact, versatile SUVs in Malaysia.”

He added, “The SUV segment in Malaysia has experienced substantial growth over the past decade. Our continued focus on iconic models like the Jimny and the Swift Sport has resonated strongly with our customers. The new 5-door Jimny not only expands our offerings but also reaffirms our dedication to delivering vehicles that embody quality, reliability, and style.”

Rizal also stated that by introducing the 5-door Jimny, Naza Eastern aims to capture a larger share of the SUV market and provide our customers with a vehicle that meets their lifestyle and practical needs. He stated that they aim to sell 100 units of this variant within the first year of its launch.

The launch event which was also for dealers and customers featured an exhibition showcasing the evolution of the Suzuki Jimny from its inception. The first generation Jimny, introduced in 1970, set the foundation for the rugged, compact off- roader. This was followed by the second generation in 1981, which brought enhanced durability and performance.

The third generation, launched in 1998, introduced more modern features while retaining the Jimny's distinctive character. Finally, the fourth generation, which began in 2018, continued to build on this legacy with advanced technology and refined design.

My first experience in a Jimny was in this second generation SJ413 version sometime in 1989, right after I had just finished my high school exams. I was at a rubber estate in somewhere a few hours from Kuala Lumpur. I can't remember exactly where as I was just tagging along with my cousin who was a fertiliser sales executive and we met up with the estate manager who had an open top or convertible variant which he used to run around the rubber estate/plantation. It actually felt totally usable in that situation.

But time have changed. These days, with the way things are in Malaysia, the Suzuki Jimny is more of a lifestyle vehicle where this is actually a toy to many urban folk. This is a SUV which they use to make up and make it look good and actually use it going to hip and chic urban settings. No longer this is used as a workhorse for farms and plantations here but more as the third or fourth car for those well heeled people in chic postcodes in and around the Klang Valley.

Naza Eastern Motors' strategic launch of the 5-door Suzuki Jimny is set to enhance its position in the competitive SUV market, driving forward the company's growth and innovation in the automotive industry. This allows more choice for customers that actually want to ferry more people in a Jimny and giving options to customers is always a good thing.

Naza Eastern Motors is confident that the introduction of the 5-door Jimny will bolster its market position and drive future growth. The company plans to implement targeted marketing campaigns and strategic partnerships to enhance brand visibility and reach new customer segments. Additionally, NazaEastern Motors aims to expand its dealership network to better serve its growing customer base across Malaysia. After asking some of the folks at the launch, they have said that they have new dealers and service centres on the way and even have one over in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Prior to this, it was actually an issue to officially buy a Jimny over there if you wanted full factory warranty or coverage.

Naza Eastern Motors is also excited to announce its network expansion plan. In September, we will be opening a new branch in Penang. Additionally, we are establishing three new dealerships located in Batu Caves, Kuantan, and Kuching. These expansions are part of our ongoing efforts to enhance accessibility and provide better service to our growing customer base across Malaysia.

The Suzuki Jimny 5 door much like its 3 door sibling, is equipped with a 1.5L engine with Idle Start Stop technology capable of producing 101 horsepower and approximately 138Nm torque. It is paired with the new ALLGRIP PRO 4WD system with a 4 speed automatic transmission (the only variant on offer for Malaysia as most buy this for a leisure vehicle and not something heavy duty. The 4 Speed low range transfer gear and LSD Traction Control Brake provides not only sufficient power but also gives drivers control and confidence on any adventure.

The ALLGRIP PRO 4WD system with low-range transfer gear offers extreme off-road capability, enabling seamless shifting from 2H two-wheel drive to 4H four-wheel drive on the fly. If you’re stuck, simply shift to 4L mode which transforms the Jimny into a veritable mountain climber, allowing it to conquer even the most unforgiving off-road terrain.

Modern features such as touchscreen infotainment system with AppleCarPlay and Android Auto, automatic climate control, and advanced safety features enhance the driving experience without compromising on Jimny’s raw spirit. Interior wise, the Jimny 5-doors is optimised through minimalistic design to avoid distractions so that the driver stays focused. This is achieved with basic black shades to avoid distractions while silver inserts highlight functional elements.

The dashboard and centre console has been designed to maximise the driver’s awareness of the angle of the car. Sections of the interior have a pattern that includes a perfect combination of practicality and utility. The 5-doors offer a large boot space with a wide rear opening, making the loading and unloading of luggage accessible and easy.

Safety is not forgotten. The Jimny is designed to assure you and your passengers’ safety. The Jimny
features 6 airbags, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist function, Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), Brake Limited Slip Differential, Hill Hold Control, Hill Descent Control, Side-Impact Door Beams, 3-point Emergency Locking retractor Seatbelts, ISOFIX Child Seat anchorages, Seatbelt Pretensioner, and Rear View Camera

Built on top of Suzuki’s renowned Ladder Frame, providing superior safety performance, the 5-door Jimny has an overall length of 3850mm compared to the 3-door which measures 3,550mm. That is an additional space of 300mm, translating to a longer wheelbase, an increase in cabin space, and additional legroom and luggage room in the rear.

Equipped with a body-on-frame design, the rugged Jimny provides a sense of solidity offering unique experience. The Jimny has LED projector headlamps with washers to ensure visibility remains uncompromised in the toughest of conditions. The optimised bumpers with angled edges enhance wheel clearance for agile manoeuvring and the protective black textured sections safeguard against damage. Meticulously designed, the Jimny combines form and innovation, augmenting the driving experience.

The writer's notes on the Jimny 3 door and 5 door

I have drive the 3 door variant belonging to a close friend and it is fun at low speeds. It has a recirculating ball based steering wheel which means that all feel or shocks from the road is not transmitted to the driver. Which great for off-roading as kick-back will not be excessive, the steering wheel will lack feel when you drive it. However, if you remember driving an old Mitsubishi Pajero L47or even a Mercedes-Benz W124 sedan, you'd actually know the feeling. For me it is dejavu especially with that squared off bonnet view you get from the driver's seat.

I also think that there is ample performance from the 101hp 1.5liter petrol engine. Good enough for pootling around town and the same goes to that 4 speed automatic transmission. This is a SUV which you need to take your time and just enjoy a slower pace.

Now add the fact that the Jimny is what you buy as an urban runabout / toy car, this is the main point of having one. There is no other reason to own a Jimny except bring a smile and some nostalgia to your life.

Of course, the 5 door adds more doors so you can easily get your family and friends in and out easily. As it has a longer wheelbase, expect more stability aside from the added legroom. Rear headroom is good although if  you are over 177mm, you may have to tilt your head a little more if getting into the Jimny through the rear doors.. Lugage space which  you access through the rear door is actually decent as I see you can put in two medium sized suitcases there. Buy an optional roof rack and Bob's your uncle for longer trips.
Of course, the 3 door is a more selfish car. I'd get that as my toy car actually. But the choice is actually yours.

The Jimny 5-door’s price starts from MYR 199,380.00 (OTR price without insurance) CBU from India.
