Pos Malaysia takes delivery of 50 MEV-1 electric motorcycles from MODENAS, AVIS & DRB-HICOM Ez Drive

Pos Malaysia Berhad (“Pos Malaysia” or “the Group”), the national post and parcel service provider recently received 50 electric motorcycles that will be used by their postmen to deliver mail. This is another step (in terms of logistics) on their journey to be net zero in terms of emissions by 2050. They took delivery of the bikes from Motosikal Dan Enjin Nasional Sdn Bhd (“MODENAS”), the assembler of MEV-1, and DRB-HICOM EZ-Drive Sdn Bhd (“AVIS”), the leasing provider of the MEV-1 programme.

While we are aware that MODENAS, AVIS  and DRB-HICOM Ez Drive are basically part of the same group as Pos Malaysia, this move is agreeable as it shows commitment to helping reduce carbon emissions within areas where these EVs operate. In shows Pos Malaysia's environmental responsibility as it executes its sustainability roadmap and  becomes an example in the logistics sector.

The MEV-1 motorcycle/ scooter is a battery electric scooter based on the Vmotor Soco from Australia (with manufacturing facilities in China). The scooter is currently in use as a delivery bike by e-hailing provider Getir in the UK. The scooter has a range of about 140kilometers (at a constant 80kmh speed) and can carry up to 230kgs. Charging time from empty is about 3.5hours. The bike is sensible for use by Pos Malaysia as postmen using them only cover fixed delivery zones which are usually around a 20-30 km radius, so they can quietly (no engine noise) and quickly (EVs have good accleration - required for stop-go deliveries) upon finishing their delivery route, they can return to the post office for a recharge at the end of their day.

EVs are actually good for these sort of short distance delivery jobs. They are quiet, clean and are actually good for the riders as they have little or no mechanical harshness that will cause rider fatigue.

Pos Malaysia Berhad’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Charles Brewer said “This marks an important milestone in our ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship. In addition to a total of 55 e-Bikes already delivering across the Klang Valley, we will deploy these 50 MODENAS e-Bikes to other states, including Johor, Kedah, Penang and Perak. By the end of 2023, our aim is to have 200 e-Bikes and 143 e-Vans across Malaysia. We are fully committed to our purpose statement to be passionate about building trust to connect lives and businesses for a better tomorrow, and we aim to have converted all of our last-mile vehicles from ICE to electric by 2030.”

Roslan Roskan, Chief Executive Officer of MODENAS remarked, “The MEV-1 represents innovation and sustainable mobility solutions, symbolising MODENAS' commitment to provide robust and eco-friendly transportation alternatives in Malaysia and beyond. With its latest technology and sleek design, the MEV-1 symbolises a significant leap towards a greener future for the nation's transportation landscape.”

“With Pos Malaysia, we are proud to actively contribute to the reduction of carbon footprint in Malaysia. There is a tremendous potential for us to do better for the planet and we want to ensure that fuel consumption and emissions decrease, by using innovative ways to encourage energy efficiency” said Mohd Syahrul Yusuf, Chief Operating Officer of AVIS Malaysia.

Charles Brewer added, “We are delighted to work with MODENAS and AVIS who share the same vision as we aiming to significantly mitigate our impact on the environment. Our commitment to reducing emissions, enhancing energy efficiency, and embracing cleaner technologies remains resolute, and as the only logistics provider in Malaysia to commit to a net zero target and todelivering on that commitment, I look forward to welcoming companies and consumers to a cleaner way to deliver – we all need to do our part! "

Pos Malaysia launched its Sustainability Roadmap earlier this year, laying out its plans to reduce its environmental footprint, targeting net zero carbon emissions for its operations by 2050. The sustainability target demonstrates the Group’s commitment to support global efforts in keeping global warming below 1.5°C.

The Group remains dedicated to delivering on its sustainability goals on multiple fronts, including its commitment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Pos Malaysia is a participating company of UN Global Compact (“UNGC”), a member of the International Post Corporation (“IPC”) Sustainability Measurement and Management System (“SMMS”) programme, and actively contributes to managing sustainability and reducing the carbon footprint of the post and parcel industry.
