UMW Toyota Motor has unveiled the new 2023 Toyota Corolla GR Sport and improved 2023 Corolla 1.8G and 1.8E

UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd (UMWT), who are the official distributor of Toyota vehicles in Malaysia, has launched the All-New 2023 Improved 2023 Toyota Corolla 1.8G and 1.8E with a new third higher specified variant, the Toyota Corolla GR Sport. The prices for the refreshed range of Corolla cars here are RM139,800 for the 1.8E, RM147,800 for the 1.8G and you add another RM5,000 for the GR Sport package to the 1.8G for the Corolla GR Sport making it come in at RM152,800.00 for a sportier Corolla that comes with Gazoo Racing bits, most notably a suspension and wheel/tyre upgrade.

The current, 12th generation Toyota Corolla was first introduced in Malaysia in October 2019 in two versions – Corolla 1.8G (you can read and watch our review HERE) and Corolla 1.8E. To date, more than 50 million units of this Corolla have been sold globally and the model remains a popular choice in its class among the non-national makes here in Malaysia. It is imported from Toyota’s regional production hub in Thailand in CBU (completely built-up) form. I believe this is because this Corolla actually looks very good, like a smaller Toyota Camry and that really is a good thing as this generation of Camry is somewhat of a looker too.

With the slightly refreshed range launched earlier today, UMWT has brought in a new variant – the Corolla GR Sport (GR-S) which is also a new offering in Toyota’s GR Sport model line-up here in Malaysia. The other GR Sport models are the Vios GR Sport (launched in December 2020) and the Corolla Cross GR Sport and Hilux GR Sport (both launched in February 2023).

A bit of Gazoo Racing history here in Malaysia. The GR Sport range was inspired by the GR Vios Challenge one-make series which has been ongoing since 2017. The positive response to the Vios GR Sport in Malaysia led to the concept being adopted regionally for other Toyota models such as the GR Supra, GR Corolla and now, the GR86. While the high-performance or full monty GR models such the GR Supra, GR Corolla and GR 86 are available only through selected Toyota dealerships with the GR Garage, the GR Sport models are available at all Toyota GR outlets throughout Malaysia.

Let’s start with the new Toyota Corolla GR Sport - the range topper (the complete brochure for the GR Sport is at the end of this article)

This is priced at RM152,800 or RM5,000 for the GR Sports bits you will read about here. The new Corolla GR Sport is aimed at young (or young at heart drivers) who want a sporty sedan for everyday driving.

While sharing a similar profile with the Corolla 1.8G, which it is based upon, and 1.8E (you cannot opt for the GR Sport bits with this base variant though, so take note), the Corolla GR Sport has different styling features which give it a more aggressive appearance, as it is a GR Sports variant. At the front, the mesh-patterned radiator grille is raised while the lower section is wider black making it look like it has an even larger air intake up front.

There is also a front underbody protector installed, visually lowering the stance of the car. Unlike the other variants, the auto-retractable door mirrors of the Corolla GR Sport have a black finish regardless of the three paint options offered. The three exterior colours are Red Mica Metallic, Platinum White Pearl MC and Attitude Black.

GR suspension tuning for better roadholding

The Corolla GR Sport comes with larger 18-inch alloy wheels with an exclusive design and a Machine/Dark Gray Metallic finish. Larger and wider 225/40R18 tyres are fitted for extra grip and steering feel. A temporary spare wheel is provided in the event of punctures.

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing, the high performance and motorsport division of Toyota, has given the Corolla GR Sport sharper handling courtesy of different shock absorbers, rear coil springs and stabilizers. The tuning, carried out with extensive track testing, has reduced roll, pitch and bouncing for smoother suspension movement. However, the Gazoo Racing engineers claim that the firmer damping and improvements to driving dynamics have not caused a loss of ride comfort, even over rough roads.

Due to the different suspension and larger tyre size, responsiveness is enhanced while straightline stability is better, giving the driver more confidence at high speeds. This additional enhancement in handling should allow the driver to carry more speed through corners even though this sportier variant still keeps the same 1.8liter 4 cylinder normally aspirated petrol powered engine powering the front wheels. 139 ps at 6,400 rpm and peak torque of 172 Nm at 4,000 rpm. Like the 1.8G it has a 7-speed Sequential Shiftmatic CVT with straightline shift operation.

The interior of the Corolla GR Sport has a black theme which complements the sporty character of the car. The body-hugging seats (with an improved design) have red stitching with red side shoulder covers and red highlights on the door trim. The GR Sport emblem is also stitched on the head restraints of the front seats (and can also be found on the rear bootlid).

Additional improvements are the same as the refreshed 1.8G variant you can read about below, especially the interior equipment levels aside from the GR Sports trim you see in the Corolla GR Sports.

The Improved 2023 Toyota Corolla 1.8G and 1.8E

The latest updates for the Corolla refresh its appearance as well as add or improve features, maintaining the high added-value of the product as well as keeping things fresh for the consumer. Five body colour choices for the Corolla 1.8G (photo above and below) and 1.8E – Calestite Gray Metallic,Red Mica Metallic, Platinum White Pearl MC, Attitude Black, and a brand new colour called Metal Stream ME.

The frontal end of the Improved Corolla has a new lower grille in glossy black for a high-class image. On the mesh-like grille, polyhedral dots create an ‘active’ expression, changing the visual texture and appearance depending on the viewing angle and lighting. Long-lasting, low-energy LEDs are used for the headlamps, turn signals, daytime running lights (DRL), rear combination lamps and foglamps (front and rear).

Toyota Super Olefin Polymer (TSOP) is used for the grille, hook cover, foglamp moulding, and bumper. TSOP is a highly recyclable eco-friendly thermoplastic resin with high surface quality and high rigidity. Both variants have new designs for the lightweight alloy wheels.

For the Corolla 1.8G, the 17-inch wheels have a multi-axis spoke configuration which expresses high quality and sportiness. The 16-inch wheels of the Corolla 1.8E have a simple yet dynamic twinspoke style with a monochrome finish. Standard tyre sizes are 225/45R17 for the Corolla 1.8G and 205/55R16 for the Corolla 1.8E. Then spare wheels provided are also alloy rims with tyres of similar size and type.

The Interior

The front seats have a revised design for improved comfort.  seat has 8-way power adjustment with adjustable lumbar support. Two types of meter panels are available, with the Corolla 1.8G having Optitron meters. Optitron meters were first used in Lexus models and have exceptionally clear displays under all lighting conditions. The meter can be switched between analog and digital displays to suit driver preference.

New for the Improved Corolla 1.8G and also in the GR Sport is a 12.3-inch fully digital colour display instrument cluster. At the press of a button, the driver can switch between four visual designs (Casual, Smart, Tough, Sporty) and three layouts to suit their personal preferences. There are also 3 MID (Multi Information Display) zones on the display panel, two of which are within the meters. Various running information such as shift position, fuel consumption, music track, etc are displayed in these MIDs. Drivers of the Corolla 1.8E get a standard meter package with a sporty appearance. The 4.2-inch MID, which has a TFT panel and colour display, provides useful information during each journey.

As before, there is a 9-inch display panel for the infotainment system which also shows imagery from the reverse camera (with guidelines). The infotainment system has Wired Apple Carplay and Android Auto Ready Connectivity, as well as USB mirroring, AUX and Bluetooth. This allows connecting of compatible smartphones to bring favourite apps and also play music via the touchscreen display panel. With the introduction of more efficient Type C USB ports on smartphones, the USB power port in the console box has been upgraded to Type C as well. For devices requiring stronger electricity supply, there is also the traditional 12V socket with a 120W supply.

A wireless charger pad (compatible with Qi standards) is also provided in the Corolla 1.8G on the front console upper tray. Compatible smartphones can be charged by simply placing them on the charging area. A minor enhancement is the addition of a clip to prevent the smartphone from moving around.

For added convenience, the Smart Entry system has been added to the front passenger door as well. With the key fob present, locking/unlocking of the doors can done with just a touch of the button on the door handle. Once inside, the engine can be started with just a press of a button while pressing on the brake lever. Other standard features (depending on variant) include dual-zone automatic airconditioning with rear vents, leather-wrapped steering wheel with control switches, rain sensor wipers, electrochromic rearview mirror, rear sunshade (manual operation) and tinted door visors. The Corolla 1.8G and GR Sport come with dual Digital Video Recorders (DVRs) which record video of the road ahead and behind. This can be useful in the event of a dispute after an accident. Additionally, there is also a standard 3D Panoramic View Monitor (PVM) which gives an overhead view of the car as well as from 4 sides for easier maneuvering and parking.

Also standard is a Vehicle Telematics System (VTS) which uses GPS/GSM to track the location of the car at all times. Functioning as a security system, if the car is stolen, recovery by the police is more likely. It can also monitor and record vehicle speeds and other operating conditions that the vehicle has been subjected to, with data sent by email to a designated user. Customers buying the Corolla 1.8E can also specify the dual DVRs, 3D PVM and VTS as extra-cost options during their purchase. The items will then be included in the total amount of the car’s H-P financing amount.

Proven 1.8-litre powertrain

All variants for the Malaysian market, as well as the Corolla GR Sport, use the proven 1.8-litre 2ZR-FE 4- cylinder DOHC 16-valve petrol engine with Dual VVT-i. The engine offers a good balance of performance and fuel efficiency, producing 103 kW/139 ps at 6,400 rpm and peak torque of 172 Nm at 4,000 rpm. All variants have a 7-speed Sequential Shiftmatic CVT with straightline shift operation. The transmission has cooperative control and, with the electronically-controlled throttle, provides a high level of drivability, smoothness, quietness, and fuel economy. With electronics managing the transmission, it is possible to alter the characteristics and for the Corolla, there are 2 drive modes selectable by the driver. ECO mode reduces fuel consumption by moderating acceleration and optimizes cabin cooling. SPORT mode provides stronger acceleration for a more exhilarating drive. To reduce engine noise, especially resonance, the intake system has received minor revisions. Resonance-suppressors are installed in ducts, inside the air cleaner and air cleaner hoses. Porous material has also been used in some ducts to lower pressure, also reducing resonance. As a result, intake sound in specific frequencies has been reduced, providing superior quietness.

TNGA

As with other new Toyota models, the Corolla employs TNGA - Toyota New Global Architecture – which is a versatile platform and architecture with a safe and stronger body. With its lower centre of gravity, TNGA also contributes to more responsive and agile handling, as well as providing a quality ride. Toyota also cares for other road-users and the Corolla’s body structure offers Pedestrian Protection if a collision occurs. Certain areas such as the bonnet and cowl have been specially shaped; an ‘island structure’ on the underside of the bonnet creates a ‘soft landing area’ for the pedestrian’s head, reducing impact energy.

TOYOTA SAFETY SENSE

While Active Safety features such as ABS, Vehicle Stability Control with Traction Control, and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution have long been standard in the Corolla as well as most Toyota models, a more advanced integrated system has been included since 2015. This is known as Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) and it was introduced with the current 12th generation Corolla. Available in the latest Corolla GR-Sport and 1.8G, the TSS suite consists of 5 main systems – Pre-Collision System (PCS), Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), Steering Assist and Lane Trace Assist with Lane Departure Alert (LDA), and Automatic High Beam (AHB.) A camera sensor and millimetre wave radar scan the road ahead for other vehicles and road-users, and data analysed at high speed determines the action to be taken. In some cases, the driver will be alerted and should no action be taken to avoid an accident, autonomous action can be initiated.

For example, with PCS, when a potential front collision is detected, the driver will first get a warning. Failure to act in time will result in the car’s brakes being activated automatically to stop the car (Automatic Emergency Braking or AEB). In some cases, avoiding a collision might not be possible but the earlier braking action can help reduce damage. DRCC is a more advanced form of cruise control whereby the set speed is adjusted so that a safe gap is maintained if there is a vehicle ahead. When there is no longer a vehicle ahead, the car will increase its speed to the set cruise control speed automatically.

Other safety features

Both the Corolla GR-Sport and 1.8G variants have a Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) which constantly scans the area along both sides of the car. If there is another vehicle, the driver will be alerted by warnings on the instrument panel and illuminated icons on the door mirrors. New for both the variants is Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) which is useful when reversing. The system, which is active when in reverse gear, scans the area on both sides which may not be visible to the driver. If there is a vehicle approaching from either side at speeds of up to 30 km/h, the driver will be alerted. The inclusion of RCTA for the Improved Corolla complements BSM in providing the driver with better situational awareness and reducing the risk of accidents.

A Tyre Pressure Warning System is also installed which constantly monitors tyre pressures. In the event that one or more tyres have pressures that are significantly lower than normal or recommended, a warning will be shown for the driver to take the necessary action.

All variants come with 7 SRS airbags and all 5 occupants are provided with 3-point seatbelts to restrain them in the event of a collision. Pretensioner and force-limiter reduce slack in the seatbelts and ensure excessive loads are not applied to the occupants' chests. ISOFIX points are available in the rear seats for compatible childseats. With these points, installing childseats is easy and they remain securely in place. At the time of being launched, the current Corolla was assessed by ASEAN NCAP and was awarded the full 5 stars. This rating would also apply to the updated model launched today
