Many, many moons after its debut on 12 December 2018, Proton’s first SUV has finally been facelifted and upgraded. The popular and now facelifted Proton X70 SUV, a C segment sized SUV, has been unveiled at the Marriott Hotel, Putrajaya. This facelift is about time, and adds a nicely revised exterior, new interior styling bits, new equipment and an upgraded ADAS 2 active safety technology too. But those that want added connectivity to their phone, the X70 is now the first Proton with Apply CarPlay and Android Auto to come with the car.
The Proton X70 when it was launched in 2018 basically started the Malaysian premium SUV segment, and has been been a popular pick by Malaysians with over 100,000 units sold and has also earned seven prestigious awards over the past five years. The X70 is based on the Geely Boyue, which has also achieved sales success with more than 1.8 million units sold in 49 countries worldwide. But it has been about 7 or so years since it was first on the roads and it is about time that Proton upgraded the SUV. So, with the 2025 X70 the brand aims to continue this legacy by offering a compelling mix of cutting-edge features and unparalleled performance.
And it actually shows in the price, which is basically the same as before but with so much more equipment and that refreshed looks. In terms of pricing alone, as well as the early bird promo, the X70 is a very, good deal in our opinion. The car also drives well with its revised engine tuning, gearbox mapping too. The 1.5liter TGDi 3 cylinder turbocharged engine may be the same but Proton has tweaked it so that it works better with the DCT gearbox. It is also a refined ride and it is actually built in Tanjung Malim with Malayaisn input, meaning that it isn't just a copy paste from a Geely, but is has has work done to suit Malaysian drivers and road conditions. (TLDR, it handles well)
Note that you can view and listen to our thoughts in our preview video which we have placed below.
“The launch of the 2025 PROTON X70 is representative of PROTON entering the next phase of our partnership with Geely. With so many milestones over the past 18 months, from the launch of the PROTON X90 and S70 to introducing EVs from smart, to opening the R&D centre in China and to the brand launch of e.MAS, it’s easy for customers to lose sight of how far the company has come since the launch of our first SUV in 2018." said Dr Li Chunrong, Chief Executive Officer, PROTON.
“Thanks to the comprehensive effort of PROTON’s vehicle development team that included over 4.2 million kilometres of testing as well as its array of updated features, improved performance and refreshed styling, we are confident the 2025 PROTON X70 will continue to attract interest as a vehicle developed and built by Malaysian for Malaysia and the world,” he added
PRODUCT SUMMARY OF THE FACELIFTED 2025 PROTON X70 SUV - Specification, Prices and Early Bird offers
Blending Cutting-Edge Design with Enhanced Performance
Following in the footsteps of its predecessor, the 2025 PROTON X70 receives an updated exterior that add new styling elements and detailing to the handsome proportions of the original. Inspired by customer feedback and a desire to add a Malaysian identity to its appearance, the carefully crafted lines begin with a new design language at the front to allow PROTON’s C-segment SUV to stand out against its rivals.
The most noticeable new feature is a new larger front grille with elegant songket-pattern elements surrounding the Proton logo framed by new trapezoidal headlamps made up of 47 individual LEDs. A new front bumper and front fenders add muscle and aggression, which is topped by a matching new hood with twin power domes that hint at the performance residing within. A new rear bumper with diffuser highlights the styling at the rear, and tying the design cohesively are 19-inch alloy wheels featuring a new dual-tone design.
Engine and Drivetrain
Powering the 2025 PROTON X70 is a 1.5-liter turbocharged direct injection engine that is assembled by PROTON in its engine plant in Tanjong Malim. Producing 177PS of power and 255Nm of torque, it is paired to a state-of-the- art 7-speed dual clutch transmission ensuring swift and smooth gear shifts with improved NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) levels. Better tuning of all drivetrain elements has also ensured a 4% improvement in fuel efficiency.
Refined Interior and Improved Technology Features
Matching the newly crafted exterior is a revamped interior featuring refinements to boost occupant comfort that is matched to new technological features. Step inside and a new steering wheel greets the driver which is matched to a premium stone grey colour on the Premium and Premium X variants. The two upper variants also receive an ambient light feature in the form of LED lights on the instrument panel that has 72 colour choices and can pulsate rhythmically to the beat of the music being played.
All variants receive a new 12.3-inch floating screen featuring a dual quad-core processing unit, 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage space. The voice recognition feature that allows access to a number of functions via the “Hi PROTON” voice command is also retained for all variants as is the Proton Intelligent Air Purifier System (PIAPS).
The 2025 PROTON X70 is the first Proton model that will be equipped with both wireless and wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Another new feature is the remote engine start via Proton Link app to cool down the interior cabin.

As one of the first vehicles to introduced Advanced Driving Assistance Systems (ADAS) to the C-segment SUV class, the PROTON X70 is widely recognised as a pioneer in active safety systems.
