Volvo Car Malaysia launches its first ever electric-only SUV, the Volvo C40 Recharge Pure Electric

Volvo Car Malaysia has expanded its electric vehicle range with the launch of the Volvo C40 Recharge Pure Electric here earlier today. The Malaysian arm of Volvo Car unveiled the first electric-only SUV  and second Recharge Pure Electric vehicle of the brand, the Volvo C40 Recharge Pure Electric. The other important point of note is the fact that the C40 is local assembled and confirms company’s commitment of going 75% of the sale of its models to be electrified globally as well as to the Malaysian market.

The 2022 Volvo C40 Recharge Pure Electric may sound like a mouthful, but at its locally assembled (CKD) form is that is allows for clean energy driving coupled to a wallop of performance all for a sum of under RM300,000, or RM RM288,888 (Price in Peninsular Malaysia, with sales tax exemption.) to be exact. When I say performance, it would be hard to find any compact sized SUV, or car that can hit 4.2seconds to 100kmh from zero under RM300K. That is impressive, as is the fact that Volvo claims that this fully electric SUV has a range of 450km on a full charge. 408HP and 660Nm in something that is a compact SUV does lift your eyebrows.

The usual Volvo safety features are there like the blind spot sensors, cross traffic alert, other active and passive safety features that you'd expect from a car in 2023 (going forward, since it is almost the new year). The interior is also as smart as ever and gets that large infotainment screen running a Google Android based system. 

The C40 is based on the same platform as the now familiar XC40 SUV. It does have a fastback rear styling rather than a more upright rear hatch. The front sports a similar body coloured front 'grille' like the XC40 Recharge EV and the lack of perforation in the front grille marks out this to be a fully electric Volvo. But if  you want a more sporty looking compact Volvo SUV, this is it. You will get speed and looks from this C40 definitely.

So lots of peace of mind for this electric car here. And for me, its the performance that is impressive. I'd buy it for a pure city SUV with occasional outstation jaunts - which must be coupled with planning to take into account its 450km range (owning to ridiculous weekend traffic on most roads out of the Klang Valley or major cites in Peninsular Malaysia).

The luxury car maker aspires for the locally assembled electric vehicle to solidify its position as the leading mover in the e-luxury segment in Malaysia. 

Speaking at the Volvo C40 Recharge Pure Electric launch, Charles Frump, Managing Director of Volvo Car Malaysia made major announcements to underline the company’s commitment for electrification:

• Volvo Car Malaysia is committed towards its sustainability ambition and on track to becoming a fully electric car company by 2030 and aims for 75% of its sales to come from the Recharge Pure Electric line-up by 2025;

• The Volvo C40 Recharge Pure Electric is the second luxury electric vehicle to be assembled locally; and

• The introduction of the ‘Online Sales’ platform will enable customers to directly make a purchase with Volvo Car Malaysia and securely make their payments online. The company intends to ride on the rapid wave of digitalisation and growing online affinity of luxury consumers in Malaysia. 

The launch of the Volvo C40 Recharge Pure Electric comes after the successful launch of the company’s first pure electric offering in Malaysia – Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric. It was an astounding success with the company still fulfilling deliveries of cars to customers with a healthy order bank going into 2023. 

The SUV is designed for customers looking for edgy design, electrification and cutting-edge technology. It comes with a full electric powertrain that produces an output of 408hp and 660Nm of torque, enabling it to go from 0 to 100km/h in 4.7 seconds*. It can cover a range of over 450 km* on a single charge, while also featuring the ability to charge up to 80% in 28 minutes**.
