Spotted for Sale: 2006 Mahindra Scorpio 2.0 (M) - Now you can act out your Inspector Sahab dreams properly

This made in India Mahindra is actually pretty cool for the price asked - RM11,000. You get to act out your dream to be a Tamil movie policeman with one of these. Well, it's either you're Inspector Sahab or you're the evil rich landlord with a lot of henchmen that always seem to arrive in a few of these. Do you also realise that every Inspector in the Tamil movie is named Inspector Sahab? Of course lah, 'Sahab' actually means 'Sir'. A polite way to address a ranked police officer.

Anyway for RM11,000 you can be Inspector Rajnikanth or one of the evil people against him. This one looks better than the standard ones as it has nicer alloy wheels than the original (pictured above) and comes with the optional kangaroo bars too. So it looks like one of those early model Mitsubishi Pajero 4x4s that most people are familiar with. The air-conditioning has also been fixed according to the ad, so it probably will be a pleasant drive with all the basic luxuries included - note the typically low rent leather seats that you may be familiar in most bread and butter cars but do also note that quite contemporary looking dashboard. Same thing. Add a Radio CD player, power steering and Tonka toy looks (but I think this is the 2wd version which is good enough most of the time unless you intend to go real off roading).

The thing about this car is that according to what was written about it when it was launched in 2002, the new Mahindra Scorpio SUV had all of its major systems designed directly by suppliers, with the only inputs from Mahindra being design, performance specifications and program cost. The design and engineering of the Scorpio's systems were carried out by suppliers directly, as well as testing, validation and materials selection. Sourcing and engineering locations were also chosen by suppliers. The parts were later assembled in a Mahindra plant under the Mahindra badge. Using this method, Mahindra was able to build from scratch a new vehicle with virtually 100 percent supplier involvement from concept to production at a cost of USD$120 million including improvements to the plant. This was a very low figure actually. The project took five years to move from concept to final product. So, quality control also came from the suppliers with final checking from Mahindra. So I would imagine the build quality of this Indian sub-continent favourite to be quite robust and reliable.

Of course, Mahindra has since stopped selling their vehicles here. Brand conscious Malaysians tend to shy away from slightly obscure brands and also the fact that somehow, USF, a DRB HICOM company who used to bring in Mahindra stopped doing so after clinching a deal to distribute and market TATA (and the Mahindra brand was novated to EON, another subsidiary within DRB Hicom).

But heck, don't let small problems like the lack of an authorised dealer stop you from buying an Indian classic that would allow you to act out your Bollywood, Tollywood movie scene. And you can carry seven other friends who can be your henchmen while you're at it.
