Last Saturday I had afternoon teh tarik with my friend Zairul. We had just gone around test driving one of the cars I had managed to procure for the weekend. So whilst we were discussing the merits of the car of the week we of course sidetracked to various other motor vehicle discussion and debate. As you know, people carriers are actually good for one thing only. People carrying.
So the other day a colleague of him drove to work a Toyota Alphard. It belonged to the guy's brother and he had to pick it up as the owner had to be elsewhere. It was a 3.0liter Toyota Alphard and was fully loaded with all sorts of creature comforts. Now when he first entered the barge of a Toyota, my friend Zairul thought that the barn was a 5 year old Alphard as it looked immaculate. It wasn't. It was a 2004 model and therefore one of the first that was imported (by some local AP dealer) into Malaysia. The colleague's brother bought the moving bungalow for RM70,000.
Imagine that. RM70,000 for a fully loaded, fully equipped moving mansion/barge/truck/van with a heck of a lot local prestige as it is an Alphard. Here in Malaysia, Toyota Alphards and its twin, the Toyota Vellfire hold some sort of status as the vehicles for VIPs to be driven in. You can't get any better than that if you get one cheaply right?
So here is one that I spotted for sale on mudah.my. A 2003 Toyota Alphard 3.0 (a) MZG. I don't even know what MZG stands for much less care. But imagine as what my friend Zairul said, "If you were about 50 years old, and you had some money in the bank, not much, but enough as you've saved it over the years you could buy this for RM70,000. You have one university going son who now has his licence for about two or three years, a wife and two other secondary school-going kids and you want something that can carry all of these adult sized people in relative comfort. What could you buy?"
"A first batch Toyota Alphard." he continued. Actually this makes perfect sense. You get the kid to drive you and the wife as well as the rest to the family gatherings or weddings. You arrive in style. Or purported style as Malaysians think the Alphard is a great thing to be seen in. This adds brownie points to the fifty year old man.
And I have to mentioned that most people are not car people and wouldn't know a 2003 Alphard from a 2012 Vellfire. I actually didn't care until a friend of mine bought one a few years ago (the Vellfire has split front headlights and rear lights with a black interior basically). Most of the Alphard owners keep their truck/bus/van/jeep in pristine condition so a 2003 model will still be a very pleasant place to be sitting in. All for under RM70,000 these days.
Take a look at the 2003 Alphard 3.0's interior here. It looks new. It also has a nice subtle bodykit and 19 inch wheels too. A complete package for most of you who dream of owning this van/truck/bus. I've also asked that if you want to take out a loan for an Alphard as old as this you still can, albeit a higher interest rate and only 40-50% of the amount. It still is a good proposition yes?
Did you notice why I keep calling the Alphard truck/bus/van/jeep? Because it technically is. Take a look at the registration card details below - see the "JIP/VAN/BAS/KVN IND WINDOW VAN" thingy. So all of you truck/bus drivers aka Alphard or Vellfire out there, do take this into account you window van drivers.
