Stellantis Malaysia has launched the all-new electric Leapmotor C10 SUV in Malaysia - Early bird offer is RM10,000 off UNTIL 30th November 2024

Earlier today, I attended the launch of Stellantis' Leapmotor brand here in Malaysia. Stellantis Malaysia had launched its first new energy brand, Leapmotor with its first global product, the all-new electric C10 SUV at the Exchange Mall in TRX Kuala Lumpur. This launch is a milestone for Leapmotor International, which is a 51:49 joint venture between Stellantis and Leapmotor of China and one that is focused on growing global sales of high-tech, cost-efficient Chinese new energy vehicles (NEVs) outside of Greater China.

The C10 SUV, a battery electric vehicle is designed for modern families and professionals, offering driving optimisation by Maserati, for its comfort, safety and intelligence.  It comes with a contemporary award-winning design combined with exceptional value made possible due to Leapmotor’s self-developed and self-manufactured parts’ approach that accounts for more than 60% of the total vehicle.

The brand has been ranked as one of the top 3 EV startup brands in the Chinese new energy vehicle market, Leapmotor has achieved remarkable growth with cumulative deliveries of 460,000 units by September 2024. This accomplishment has moved Leapmotor up the rung as a leading brand, and it has stated its desire in taking on the global stage as Leapmotor International through Stellantis’ comprehensive sales and service network.

Daniel Gonzalez, Chief Operating Officer, Stellantis ASEAN said, "Our partnership with Leapmotor is quite unique as it offers customers access to advanced, high-value BEV technology, bolstered by the organisational and retail support of Stellantis. This will ensure a customer-focused ownership experience that sets the Leapmotor brand apart from other Chinese competitors. By introducing the all-new electric Leapmotor C10 SUV locally, we are actively contributing to a cleaner and greener future, and are aligned with the nation’s goal towards empowering sustainable mobility.”

Jamie Francis Morais, Managing Director of Stellantis Malaysia said, "The launch of the all-new electric Leapmotor C10 marks a truly exciting milestone for Stellantis Malaysia, and enables us to be a disrupting force within the local EV segment by offering an outstanding BEV SUV. Packed with many world’s first features and technologies in its segment, the C10 is the hallmark product that will showcase its finest innovations first-time to all Malaysians. It's also an accessible and innovative EV option in the competitive market that we are confident will meet and align with the needs of discerning Malaysian consumers.”

The all-new electric Leapmotor C10 has an early bird introductory price of RM149,000 on the road without insurance from now until 30th November 2024. Then it becomes its usual RM159,000 On the Road before insurance (in Peninsular Malaysia). It is available in Glazed Green, Pearly White, Canopy Grey, or Tundra Grey, with two interior colours — Criollo Brown (available only for Glazed Green) and Midnight Aurora.

So what do I think about the 2025 All-electric Leapmotor SUV?

Well, considering that there are so many recent Battery EV launches recently and even Hybrid EVs also, competition is stiff from the start. The C10 has potential in terms of its package but I do believe that Leapmotor could made the pricing a little more competitive even though it seems to be one of the larger SUVs sold in this price segment.

The only one that comes to mind is the mild hybrid Proton X90 in terms of size and maybe the upcoming Omoda C9 which is a full petrol powered performance monster.Oh, we also have that GWM H6 HEV which is priced well too. Let's not forget BYD. So the market segment is really a big battleground of various brands new and old, fossil fuel powered, battery electric or both.

The C10 looks and feels like a D minus segment car. It is huge for what it being offered. It feels as long as a D segment car inside (especially the rear seats- very good rear legroom) but feels like it could be slightly wider. However, space is darn good inside for what it is and in certain interior trim, looks very, very premium.

The exterior styling seems like it follows many China SUVs in that it looks like it takes after a Porsche Cayenne but is stlightly Macan in size (but longer). To me it looks like a Cayenne from the A pillar rearwards, with a Smart #1 front end and a different front bumper. It looks typically rounded in terms of styling and I cannot help but compare it to a Cayenne, Macan, Geely Galaxy E5 (Proton e-Mas 7) and more. The Chinese SUVs tend to be all rounded and take after that look. Even the performance, range and other bits seem to be in and around the same industry standards until you have to choose other factors like warranty, price and whether the sales person is pretty or handsome enough for you to give him or her the booking fee.

But I digress.

Aside from the high equipment levels and the premium material used throughout the cabin, the issue is that the interior feels familiar. Maybe I've seen a derivative of this dashboard with its infotainment screen and driver's instrument cluster. It looks like it has the same cascading downwards style of dashboard with two LED screens - almost the same sizes for the drivers instrument cluster and either a longish 12 inch screen or a Ipad Pro sized tablet for the Infotainment screen and a floating center console. It seems like the same type of interior with some changes here and there.

So, you are looking a chic, very spacious, good and comtemporary looking SUV.in a market segment that is super competitive.

Down below is the product summary of the 2025 Leapmotor C10.
