The 2024 Mercedes-Benz C 350 e Plug-in Hybrid is the new C-Class range topper here in Malaysia. Prices estimated to start at RM355k

Yesterday, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia unveiled the latest variant of the best-selling Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan for the Malaysian market. This one is the new range topper here, the 2024 (W206) Mercedes-Benz C350e Plug-in Hybrid with the AMG-Line trim. The new luxury compact sedan is locally assembled at the Mercedes-Benz production plant in Pekan, Pahang. The C 350 e Plug-in Hybrid combines a 95kw electric motor with a traditional 2.0liter petrol engine for enhanced efficiency. It replaces the previous range topper, the conventional petrol powered C300 AMG line, and is estimated to come in at around RM355,000 before any insurance.

Amanda Zhang, CEO & President, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia said, “The Mercedes-Benz C350 e Plug-in Hybrid embodies a fusion of agility and performance, accentuated by its sporty AMG appearance. As a plug-in hybrid variant with up to 117 km (WLTP) in all-electric range, the C 350 e serves as a bridge towards an all-electric future and will pave the way for other plug-inhybrid models to come. This vehicle offers our customers the flexibility of covering everyday routes for the most part in all-electric mode without using the combustion engine. Backed by a 6-year/100,000 km high-voltage battery warranty, we deliver cutting-edge innovation and lasting assurance to our esteemed customers.”

The C350 e Plug-in hybrid comes with a published electric range of up to 117 kilometres (WLTP)  The 1,999 cc 4 cylinder turbocharged engine has a rated output of 150 kW (204 hp) at 6,100 rpm, and has 320 Nm of torque spanning from 2,000 to 4,000 rpm. This four-cylinder petrol engine ensures a dynamic and flexible driving experience.

The electric motor of the C 350 e  has a rated output of 95 kW and a torque of 440 Nm, and has been tuned to have a seamless blend of power sources. This integration results in an impressive maximum rated power system output of 230 kW (313 hp) and a peak torque of 550 Nm at the rated power system output, ensuring a brisk performance. But usually those who buy a hybrid usually wants to know how far can you drive on pure electricity, so the C 350 e has an electric range of up to 117 km (WLTP), which is actually good for something which is a hybrid that has a smaller sized battery compared to a pure battery electric vehicle.

The C350e has a high-voltage (HV) battery, with an energy content of 25.4 kWh and this is what provides the over 110km worth of range. Performance is decent, the acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is achieved in just 6.1 seconds, which is good for its size and weight, while a top speed of 245 km/h adds versatility to its capabilities. Now this is what I like about petrol powered cars and hybrid power ones too, they actually allow cars to actually have some top speed instead of maxing out a single speed gearbox with maximum speeds of around 190kmh. That 9 speed G-tronic transmission helps as you can read.

The high-voltage (HV) battery has been developed in-house by Mercedes-Benz. It is part of a fourth-generation family of batteries and represents a logical evolution of the previous generation. It consists of 96 cells in a so-called pouch configuration. To account for the high energy density, the HV battery has an internal cooling system. The thermal management system can therefore control the operating temperature irrespective of the climate control in the vehicle interior. A standard-fit 11 kW charger is available for three-phase charging at a Wallbox connected to the domestic AC mains. Included with the C 350 e is a mode 2 charging cable.

The positioning of the battery in the vehicle brings advantages on a day-to-day basis compared with the previous model: there is no longer a step in the boot, and through-loading is now possible. This is a noticeable change that is actually good and you do see that boot space isn't compromised at the previous W205 hybrid variants.

The exterior of the new 2024 C350e C-Class features AMG Line styling, The Mercedes-Benz pattern grille with the star design in chrome with 18-inch AMG 5-spoke light-alloy wheels. The specified Night Package included features sporty, expressive design elements in high-gloss black such as the louvre of the radiator shell, trim moulding in the AMG front apron, beltline trim strip and window surround, and exterior mirror housings.

The 18inch wheels and tyre combo is most likely fitted with ride comfort as well as the added precaution against Malaysian road surfaces (which can be extremely bad for anything over 19inches most of the time, unless  you proritise looks over anything else). One must note that the Plug in Hybrid is also heavier than an equivalent C-class that only has a petrol or diesel engine inside it. So there is also rear only airMATIC (air) suspension on the car with conventional struts up front. This must be due to the heavier rear of the batteries and the need to ensure smooth and level ride at all times. This is unique as to date, only full air-suspension Mercedes-Benz cars have been sold or full conventional suspension setups but never a mix.

Other notable exterior highlights include DIGITAL LIGHT, Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus, panoramic sliding sunroof, and ambient lighting with projection of brand logo. The rear-end design is typical of a Mercedes-Benz saloon. The high-quality design of the tail lamps fascinates with an unmistakable day and night appearance. The charging port is now located on the side, with the fuel car on the other side. The charging port is no longer at the rear of the car compared to the previous generation.

As for the interior, the new C-Class features an AMG Line interior with metal structure trim elements, multifunction sports steering wheel in nappa leather, and AMG floor mats. The ARTICO man-made leather upholstery in black and instrument panel and beltlines in ARTICO man-made leather in nappa
look further accentuates the sense of comfort in the cabin.

The now familliar in the W206 C-class features a high-resolution 12.3-inch LCD screen and 11.9-inch touchscreen central display are slightly tilted towards the driver by six degrees. The vehicle is also equipped with the latest generation of MBUX multimedia system making the interior more digital and intelligent.

Other notable cabin highlights include sport seats, fingerprint scanner, front wireless charging, ambient lighting and smartphone integration package. With safety in mind, the new C-Class features 360°
camera, Blind Spot Assist, Active Brake Assist, and GUARD 360 ° Vehicle protection.

According to Mercedes-Benz Malaysia, the driving experience is significantly more electric. With the increased estimated electric range of up to 117 kilometres (WLTP), drivers will be able to cover most regular commutes to the office or to run errands in town under electric power alone. The car is equipped with energy recovery function which allows kinetic energy to be recuperated during deceleration or downhill driving, a process that has now also been improved in interaction with the hydraulic brake. The energy recovery output is now over 100 kW.

The intelligent, route-based operating strategy activates the electric driving mode where this is most appropriate forthe route. It takes into account such factors as navigation data, topography, speed limits and the traffic conditions for the entire planned route. A driver wishing to influence the energy recovery
rate can do so directly in three stages controlled by rocker switches behind the steering wheel.

This is possible in all driving modes except SPORT. In the driving mode D-, for example, the driver can experience th "one-pedal feeling" driving style that comes with driving EVs these days: When the driver takes his foot off the accelerator the vehicle slows down, purely by electric means, to such an extent that the hydraulic foot brake is often not needed.

The operating strategy communicates with the sensors of the assistance systems and thus efficiently supports the driver in many driving situations. Over longer distances in urban areas, for instance, the car will prioritise electric driving. With the BATTERY HOLD driving mode, maintaining the charge state of the high-voltage battery is given priority, for example when intending to drive in a city center; selection of the most suitable drive configuration by the hybrid powertrain system, depending on the driving situation and route.

The new C-Class has a haptic accelerator pedal module with a pressure point at an accelerator pedal angle of 9.7°. In ELECTRIC mode, this power surge is activated and allows all-electric vehicle operation up to the additional pressure point. If the pressure point is overridden, the combustion engine starts and delivers additional torque.
