MAN Truck & Bus (M) Sdn Bhd yesterday launched the New MAN Truck Generation. This new range of trucks is a completely new range of heavy-duty trucks for the Malaysian market and they have been focused towards the changing requirements of the transport industry and features improvements in areas such as driver orientation, assistance systems (more active safety features including blind spot detection systems, autonomous emergency braking and adaptive cruise control), digital connectivity and reducing the environmental impact. One major update is the cleaner fully Euro 5 engines that these new MAN TGS series uses, making them the first to offer such levels of emission standards here in the country.
The New MAN Truck Generation Trucks comes with Euro V or Euro 5 engines as standard, making MAN Malaysia the first heavy-duty Truck manufacturer in the country to step-up and do its part in helping reduce the carbon footprint of the transport and logistics industry. The launch is timely as the Malaysian government recently announced its desire to attain carbon neutral status by 2050. The Euro V engines reduce emissions of nitrogen oxide (NOx) gases through the use of low sulphur Euro V diesel and AdBlue exhaust treatment.
Yes, with cleaner emissions standard of Euro 5, comes the introduction of an addition additive called AdBlue, a urea based liquid used to reduce the amount of air pollution created by a diesel engine. Usual ratio is that one tank of AdBlue for every two tanks of Diesel. Of course, these are some of the things that operators of new diesel engines have to take into account.
This is truly something new for the industry. A truck maker actually offering the full Euro 5 suite which would ensure cleaner trucks here in Malaysia. Of course, this helps the environment aside from the fuel efficiency which new generation of trucks bring. MAN here in Malaysia are bringing something new to the table and are for the moment, bringing in the cleanest trucks in the country.
MAN Malaysia is offering five variants of the TGS model from the New MAN Truck Generation range that are specified for three main applications:
4x2 and 6x2 for haulage/container
6x4 for construction and heavy-duty use
4x2 and 6x2 with ADR (Agreement Concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road) specifications.
Prices start from RM340,000 for the standard specifications, excluding SST, and as usual, this is the starting price where operators must spec up their trucks from.
The new MAN TGS comes with two engine options. The 4x2 and 6x2 variants for haulage and transport of dangerous goods (which is especially good for those in the oil and gas industry) are powered by the proven and reliable MAN D20, 10.5-litre, 6-cylinder inline Euro V diesel engine. The heavy duty-oriented 6x4 variant has the bigger but equally efficient 12.4-litre D26 engine. Both are future-proof, featuring Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology to reduce harmful gases being released into the atmosphere - This is where the Euro 5 and AdBlue specification comes in where the additives ensure that the catalytic convertors work within the required emissions parameters.
Both engines will come with the 12-speed MAN TipMatic® intelligent gearbox with advanced software and selectable driving programmes for different applications.
In terms of other options like those who want a full height cabin, which wasn't shown at the launch, one can also specify it as well as specifying a MAN TGS with a flat floor which allows the driver to unhindered in the cabin. Of course, this and even the above mentioned Active Safety systems can be customised to the operator's needs.
One good thought that we got from our chat with the team at MAN Malaysia is that they would prefer their customers look into the actual needs of their business rather than their wants. Many do like to want the best, the most and even the biggest but forget their true haulage requirements so this simple little thought is quite good.
MAN Malaysia Managing Director Andrew O’Brooks (pictured above) said that the New MAN Truck Generation was a transformational product that marked the evolution of MAN Truck & Bus from a vehicle manufacturer to provider of intelligent and sustainable transport solutions.
“The New MAN Truck Generation is the most ambitious project by MAN Truck & Bus in 20 years. It is the answer that our customers expect us to provide in face of increasingly diverse and complex challenges confronting the transportation industry all over the world, including here, in Malaysia." said O'Brooks.
The New MAN Truck Generation, was crowned the International Truck of the Year 2021, winner of two awards at iF Design Award 2021 and just named “Sustainable” Truck of the Year 2022.
Summary of the New MAN Truck Generation Range for Malaysia
Excellent driver fit and ergonomics
Developed with extensive input from drivers, the New MAN Truck Generation sets new standards in terms of user-friendliness, optimum ergonomics, more intuitive operation, reliable networking with digital devices and applications, optimum space and comfort – all this geared towards needs of the people who spend much of their lives in the vehicles.
The new MAN TGS for the Malaysian market features a host of class-leading innovations such as the MAN EasyControl and SmartSelect.
MAN EasyControl consists of four buttons which you can see located at the base of the driver's door above, two of which are customisable, for the convenience of the driver when he is outside the truck. There is no need to climb back into the cabin to activate a variety of functions such as hazard lights, engine off and closing of windows.
MAN SmartSelect is a two-tier infotainment system controller (seen below in the middle of the photo) that comes with a foldable wrist rest to make operation easy and precise even if there are vibrations in the cabin when the truck is moving.
The redesigned smart-looking multi-function steering wheel is smaller than that of the previous generation MAN Trucks.
Equipped with airbag as standard for Malaysia, the new steering wheel can now be adjusted from 20° to an almost passenger car-like 55°, offering an ideal steering position for drivers of all shapes and sizes.
Also new is the ability to adjust the steering wheel forward to 0° park position. This creates maximum space for easy getting in and out of the cab and for rest periods.
The cockpit is split into two levels. The bottom level instrument panel is now even more angled towards the driver for optimum reachability while the displays on the top level are placed further away for optimum visibility. This makes it easy for even the most seasoned drivers to switch to and from reading information on the display to the traffic on the road ahead.
Class-leading efficiency and economy
The Euro V engines in the new MAN TGS combine with the newly developed consumption-reducing driveline and software components ensure a new level of efficiency to deliver improved fuel economy and lower CO² emissions.
The improved aerodynamics of the new vehicle design also play their part in this reduction. Comprehensive product improvements for components and in the areas of maintenance and service reduce total cost of ownership.
Optimised uptime – Always reliable and available
The hallmark of a ‘good’ a Truck is its reliability. The New MAN Truck Generation offers a new level of reliability and product quality as confirmed in the latest independent TÜV reports. The new MAN TGS features a newly developed, simplified, powerful and future-proof electronics architecture, that will significantly improve and expand its functionalities well into its service life.
Additionally, MAN Telematics, a comprehensively developed, cloud-based, factory-fitted digitalised maintenance and fleet management system, reduces operating inefficiencies and costs whilst delivering maximum up-time of the new MAN TGS. The good news is that MAN Malaysia is offering a free two-year subscription with every purchase of the New MAN Truck Generation.
New Active Safety Features
The new MAN TGS is equipped with a host of innovative safety and driver assistance systems to ensure the driver and vehicle complete their business safely. These include:
Lane Departure Warning System (LDW)
Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
Electronic Stability Program
Advanced Emergency Brake Assist (EBA).
Customer Oriented Consultation and Offer System
In-line with the arrival of the New MAN Truck Generation, MAN Malaysia is introducing a new consultation and offer system which is entirely oriented towards the needs of the customer.
This allows for the new MAN TGS to be customised to fit the exact transport task, using comprehensively adjustable and flexible configuration options. This includes individually coordinated services from maintenance and digital services, which make the truck a holistic, integrated transport solution – all this from a single source, with competent personal contact partners.
The New MAN Truck Generation represents the transformation of the entire company worldwide and is set to propel the MAN brand onto the next level here in Malaysia.
