Shell Eco-marathon Asia 2019, which is the most important event in the Make the Future Live Malaysia event, has come to a close with teams from Thailand, China and Singapore demonstrating the best energy efficiency within their respective prototype categories. The event was held at the Sepang International Circuit from 29th April to the 2nd of May 2019 and it was where students from all over Asia and the Middle East compete in making the most fuel efficient prototype vehicles they can and compete in efficiency 'races' against one another.
Let's just jump to which university won and how did the Malaysian teams fare (not as well as the previous year actually)... but do read on for other interesting details on how the teams did and what they thought was the most important criteria in making them come out tops.
The next ten or so paragraphs tell the story of the winners in the on-track categories. Do note that the students who took part are our future scientists and engineers who could bring change.
PROTOTYPE CATEGORY WINNERS
In the Mileage Challenge, RMUTP RACING from Rajamangala University of Technology Phra Nakhon in Thailand achieved an equivalent of 1,546.9 kilometres on a litre of Ethanol with their Prototype car. This is like driving from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to Bangkok, Thailand on a single tank of fuel.
“We are very happy to win. We did our best and we used our experience gathered over the three years of competing, but our number one rule is teamwork,” said Peerapon Booncheuy, team manager for RMUTP. Third time is a charm for this team. It also says that one should not give up.
Other winners in the prototype competition included HuaQi-EV from China with a result of 501.6 km/kWh in the Battery Electric category and TP ECO FLASH from Singapore with a result of 403.3 km/m3 in the hydrogen category.
DRIVERS’ WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFIER
At the Drivers World Championship Qualifier, Nanyang E Drive from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore beat other top UrbanConcept cars in a breathtaking race to cross the finish line without running out of their limited allocation of energy.
“We are very happy as the win wasn’t expected. It was nerve-wracking as we were a close second for most of the race. Our secret was honestly just very good teamwork – the team, monitoring every aspect of the car, letting me know how much energy to use and where to use it. So it was a very well-coordinated effort and that to me was the key to our success” shared Colin Ioh, team driver for Nanyang E Drive
ITS Team 5 from Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember in Indonesia and team LH – EST from Lac Hong University in Vietnam took second and third place respectively.
After this, the top three teams from the Asia qualifier will face off against the best UrbanConcept teams from the Americas and Europe in the Drivers’ World Championship to be held at Make the Future Live in London, UK, on July 5, 2019. The ultimate winning team will be awarded with an invitation to visit Scuderia Ferrari's exclusive headquarters in Italy. They will participate in exciting workshops and learn from the best at Ferrari.
Norman Koch, Make the Future Live General Manager, said: “The Drivers’ World Championship incorporates both the fuel efficiency of the vehicle with the technique and skills of the driver. This time it is the strategy of handling the vehicles while simultaneously managing fuel efficiency. We saw amazing action and my congratulations goes to all the teams for all their achievements.”
Shell Eco-marathon Asia 2019 culminated at an awards ceremony celebrating the achievements of a regionally diverse crowd of students, from 18 countries across Asia and the Middle East.
“This year’s competition has concluded victoriously with all our student teams pushing the boundaries to showcase their talent, ingenuity and innovation. Their dedication, teamwork, courage and perseverance are an inspiration for each of us to contribute towards a more and cleaner energy future. Each and every team here today are true champions,” expressed Datuk Iain lo, Chairman of Shell Malaysia.
Off-Track Awards
Shell Eco-marathon is more than the track victory. Students are also recognised for their communications, technical innovation, design, safety and perseverance. These are the Off-track Awards. We are highlighting one of the winners, the one that won the newest off-track award.
This year a new off-track award - Circular Economy Award was introduced to recognise the team which demonstrates “circular economy” thinking in the concept, design and functioning of their vehicle. The objective is to motivate students to think how they can integrate the concept of circular economy in engineering of materials, products and services for real life industrial and consumer solutions.
The winner of the Circular Economy award is MMU Grüne Welt from Multimedia University Melaka Campus, Malaysia based on their vehicle design, the circular potential of the components used to manufacture their vehicle and incorporation of an assessment method to analyse environmental impacts. The team received a USD3000 prize in recognition of their achievement. Yes, a Malaysian team won in this new category! Kudos to them and hope that next year they will go on and achieve higher.
“We did not expect to win the Circular Economy awards at all, especially since we did not perform very well last year – we weren’t even able to get a valid run. However, we learnt from our failure and learned from it. We couldn’t be happier as all our hard work and efforts finally paid off. I hope more Malaysian teams would participate in Shell Eco-marathon Asia in the upcoming years and don’t let your failures discourage you” shared Athmas Thum, team manager for MMU Grüne Welt.
