KLIMS'13 - The Nissan Leaf is officially launched

Nissan launched the Nissan Leaf electric car at KLIMS13. RM168,000 on the road for a fully electric car. This is a car which would have limited mileage if you are hard on the throttle pedal most of the time and love air-conditioning, radio and lights on. If your commutes are reasonably short then it would be the car for you. It would actually suit eco-mentalists, housewives, aunties and uncles who would only use the car within a 30km radius to run errands and for anyone that hates filling up petrol at the pumps. All they have to do is use the supplied power cold and charge the car after each drive.

Convenient.  And that's all I have to say about the Leaf.

Press Release
NISSAN DRIVES INTO THE FUTURE WITH THE
100% ELECTRIC NISSAN LEAF AT KLIMS’13

Kuala Lumpur, 14th November 2013 – Edaran Tan Chong Motor (ETCM) today launched the much-awaited 100% Electric Nissan LEAF at the Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show (KLIMS’13). The Nissan LEAF, which is the best-selling Electric Vehicle (EV) with over 87,000 units sold globally (as of end October 2013), is now available for the Malaysian public. Economical to run and maintain, it redefines all traditional notions of the automobile, and is geared towards the socially responsible motorist.

“We are firmly committed towards eco-mobility, and believe that EVs are the future. The launch of the 100% Electric Nissan LEAF is proof of our commitment towards this goal. It is not only a stylish zero-emission vehicle, but provides excellent driving performance realized throughout Nissan’s technology. We believe it will be well received by the ecoconscious motorist who is looking for dynamic transportation with the least environmental impact”, said Mr. Tan Keng Meng, Director of Marketing & Product Planning at ETCM.

Mr. Tooru Abe, Chief Product Specialist for the 100% Electric Nissan LEAF stated, “The Nissan LEAF is a practical car that can be used every day, comfortably accommodates five adults and offers superior performance and drivability, even on highways.”

The 100% Electric Nissan LEAF features a compact hood, roof spoiler, rear bumper with diffuser and an iconic shoulder character line which combined with the shape of the rear combination lamps contributes to its aerodynamics. Distinctive LED headlamps (with a blue reflection) and LED rear combination lamps add to the stylish design. Seating five adults with ease, it features a leather and suede interior and a centre cluster which emphasizes the latest digital devices, and is ‘dial-free’. There is also a Twin Combination Digital Meter indicating speed, Li-ion battery power, estimated driving range and even an eco-meter to measure your eco driving status.

In the back, up to 370 litres (VDA method) of luggage space is available, with the option to fold-down the back seats for a total of 720 litres of available space. The rear seats themselves are fitted with three sets of 3-point seatbelts and ISOFIX to keep passengers secure. Technologically advanced, the 100% Electric Nissan LEAF is equipped with a Climate Control Timer as well as a Charging Timer, advanced range management, and even an ECO Indicator showing instant ECO driving and long term ECO driving (ECO tree).

Stepping on the accelerator brings an instant response with powerfully smooth acceleration, matched by an incredibly quiet driving experience. As it is powered only by an electric motor, it generates zero emissions ensuring its environmental impact is negligible. Decelerating or driving downhill converts the kinetic energy from the wheel torque into electricity through its innovative regenerative braking system, recharging the battery pack. Four drive modes are available - the regular D mode, D-ECO mode, B mode and B-ECO mode - to suit different driving conditions. On a full charge, 100% Electric Nissan LEAF has an estimated range of 195 kilometres according to the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC).

Best of all, the 100% Electric Nissan LEAF is economical to run, which is 75% cheaper than the fuel costs of running a petrol-powered equivalent (based on current electricity rates in Malaysia). Maintenance is cheap as well, which is 80% savings over a 5-year period as compared to its petrol-powered equivalent.

It goes without saying that there is no need to visit a petrol station – and no more worries about increases in fuel prices either. Each 100% Electric Nissan LEAF comes with a home-charging unit, allowing easy charging at home when not in use. The charging timer allows safe charging overnight as well, with a pre-set charging time. Recharging time for a completely drained battery pack is around 4 hours with the supplied 6.6kWh home-charging unit. There is also a solar panel mounted on its rear roof spoiler which maintains the charge of the 12V battery that runs the lamps, wipers, audio and other accessories. Additionally, there are currently a total of 15 public EV charging stations located around the Klang Valley, Penang, Malacca and Johor Bahru. The best part is that, these EV chargers are currently Free-of-Charge to the public.

Safety is assured in the 100% Electric Nissan LEAF as it comes equipped with a total of 6 airbags as well as an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Brake Assist (BA), Hill Start Assist (HSA) and Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC). It offers high levels of occupant protection thanks to Nissan’s Zone Body construction which maintains the integrity of the passenger compartment and reduces pedestrian injury. Highly rated in crash test results, the 100% Electric Nissan LEAF has received a 5-star Euro NCAP rating.

The 100% Electric Nissan LEAF comes in 5 colour choices – Pearl White, Blue Ocean, Brilliant Silver, Metallic Slate and Super Black and is available for RM 168,800.00 on the road.
