KLIMS13 - At The Perodua Stand

I thought I'd start the Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show 2013 (KLIMS13) review with Perodua. The reason being the fact that motor shows aren't sales road shows but one which showcases the latest concept cars from automotive manufacturers. There isn't too many at KLIMS13, which is a sore point, but Perodua the only 'local' representative (since Proton is a no-show) has a few design and engineering concepts to show.

The most prominent must have been the BuddyZ concept sedan. This is a showcase of Perodua's internal design team where they designed the whole bodywork (from existing chassis architecture - either from a Passo or a Toyota Etios...I don't really care as...see the next few sentences.). It may look like a stumpy little spud but this spud was designed by our local talents. Now much talent is up for you and me to decide. I personally believe that they have engineering talent, but not artistic talent. The good news is that this is only a concept car and may not reach production. One look at that funky interior (below) and you'd know that it won't reach actual production. A sigh of relief folks?

Next is the upcoming Perodua Viva replacement. We get to see a plastic outline of the car's details and an almost complete looking interior. It looks slightly wider than the current Viva (but that could be an optical illusion since it is just a plastic model cut out) and is as long as the Viva. The interior looks like a narrower Myvi. A good thing in my books as it has that same dash mounted gearshift if it were an automatic.

The next Perodua showcase is the new 1.0liter engine and 4 speed automatic transmission. The new twin cam 1.0liter non-variable valve3 cylinder engine is a new variation of the 1.5liter 2NR-FE which has an integrated exhaust manifold (instead separate from the cylinder head). The cylinder bores are telfon coated and each cylinder has its own individual oil spray jet to keep things cool internally. The fully aluminium engine is up to 15kg lighter than the steel bottomed engine used in the current Viva and while it does not have variable valve timing, it is said to produce the same amount of horsepower and has better torque characteristics. Coupled to the more efficient but still 4 speed automatic (which will be locally manufactured) it is predicted that the Viva replacement will be a better drive. I think it would. No one makes a car which is worse to drive than the previous model these days. I have to apologise for the photos here. The vivid blue lighting has caused some havoc with the exposure here.

Last but not least, Perodua had showcased a Perodua Myvi Advanced Concept. It has different lights up front and a different, slightly wide arched bodykit. It looks too boy racer for my liking with its red Recaro-esque bucket seats and stickered exterior. But the main reason Perodua is showcasing the car is the fact that it is equipped with an Android based infotainment system that would allow you full WiFi access to your car's locks, alarm and more via your handphone. It could soon be featured in Perodua cars. Anyway, stay tuned folks. More pics to come from other makes at KLIMS13.
