The new Toyota Vios Hybrid (HEV) is now available in Malaysia

This morning, UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd (UMWT) officially launched the Toyota Vios HEV (hybrid electric vehicle) and Vios HEV GR Sport, which more importantly, comes together with the localisation of hybrid battery assembly at its Bukit Raja manufacturing facility. The combined initiative reflects the brand’s long-term commitment to making electrified mobility accessible, practical, and scalable for Malaysians. In other words, it allows the Toyota hybrids to be made more affordable to us here as it is locally assembled in certain models.

The Vios HEV is also available in a GR Sport (GR-S) version with sportier looks and enhanced performance. Both models are assembled locally and will be offered alongside the Vios 1.5G and Vios 1.5E, expanding the choices for the Vios, which has been among the bestselling models in the non-national segment since it was first launched over 20 years ago. The Vios HEV is priced from RM103,900, while the Vios HEV GR Sport starts from RM109,900 for Peninsular Malaysia, making it Toyota’s most accessible hybrid offering in the market.

The two new Vios variants look like the non-hybrid variants already on sale (with the GR Sport variant being more sporty - bodykit, trimming BUT most importantly, Gazoo Racing tuned shocks and springs with a retuned electric power steering for a sportier drive- should corner flatter or better and feel better than the non-GR variant). The changes can been seen inside and underneath, with the 4th generation Toyota hybrid battery module placed under the rear seats and the regular 12v battery now placed in the boot due to the hybrid system now occupying its place on the left side of the bonnet. There is some space lost in the boot, but from what I can tell, it is quite minimal. And you can have the option of a spare tyre in the boot floor at a price.

Datuk Ravindran K., President of UMW Toyota Motor, said, “The Vios Hybrid represents an important step forward in making electrified mobility more inclusive in Malaysia. As our most accessible hybrid model, it reflects Toyota’s Best in Town approach by delivering advanced hybrid technology into a car Malaysians already trust and rely on every day. At the same time, our investment in local hybrid battery assembly reinforces our commitment to Mobility for All. By building key electrification capabilities locally, we are supporting national sustainability goals, strengthening local industry, and ensuring more Malaysians can benefit from reliable, high-quality hybrid mobility.”

The Vios HEV does not need external charging of its battery pack. The recharging takes place as the car is running. Even when braking, a regenerative process recovers the energy that is usually lost and channels it to the battery pack. The driver does not need to do anything as recharging is automatic when needed.

Should there be some occasions when the energy in the battery pack becomes low (due to extended high-speed driving), then the engine will have a greater role in running the car. As long as there is sufficient petrol in the fuel tank, the car can continue running – unlike a fully electric vehicle, which would be unable to continue. the reduced use of the engine significantly increases the range with a full fuel tank, which has a size of 36 litres.

The Vios HEV is fitted with a 1.5- litre DOHC 16-valve petrol 4-cylinder engine with Dual VVT-i is used. This all-aluminium engine is from the NR family which is well known for high thermal efficiency, low emissions and reliability. Instead of a 7-speed CVT, there is an E-CVT to deliver power to the front
wheels.

Adapted for use with the Toyota Hybrid System in the Vios HEV, the engine produces 91 PS of power at 5,500 rpm and maximum torque of 121 Nm between 4,000 - 4,800 rpm. Factory testing using the
NEDC standard has shown the fuel consumption to be as low as 3.6 litres/100 kms (27.8 kms/litre), around 31% less than the Vios 1.5G.

The motor generator for moving the car generates 80 PS with 141 Nm and typical of electric motors, this maximum output is available from the time the car moves off. Although the maximum output of the petrol engine is lower than that in the Vios 1.5G, the combined output of the THS is 111 ps, which is almost 5% more than the Vios 1.5G, enabling stronger acceleration.

The motor is powered by a 4.3 Ahr lithium-ion battery pack installed, as stated earlier, under the rear seats, thus ensuring similar luggage capacity as the Vios (Aside from the small 12v battery compartment in the boot, that is. The THS has been tested extensively in local conditions and to keep it at optimum temperature, it receives cooling air drawn from the cabin. With the cooling system and ability to operate in a wide range of temperatures, the battery pack should last as long as the car under normal usage conditions.

On a personal note, I have friends who have reported to me that they have been running their old Prius and Prius C sold here by UMW in the early days of the hybrid availability here, I have heard that both are still on their original hybrid batteries and they seem healthy enough for hybrids over 10 years of age. Some older. It seems Toyota hybrids last long. So this new Vios HEVs are an interesting proposition for owning one in 2026 onwards.

DETAILS OF THE NEW 2026 TOYOTA VIOS HEV & VIOS GR Sport HEV (MALAYSIAN SPEC)

Bringing Hybrid Technology into the Mainstream
Built on the familiarity, reliability, and everyday practicality of Malaysia’s bestselling B-
