On the 17th of October, we attended the official launch of the Aeson Power brand here in Malaysia. The event marks the launch of its Sodium-ion automotive battery series, NaPulse Starting, NaPulse Start-Stop and NaForce Start-Stop. The launch event showcased the product, its emerging technology, and the benefits of sodium-powered batteries against traditional automotive lead-acid batteries, offering consumers safer and more efficient alternatives for automotive batteries.
Aeson Power focuses on sodium-ion battery technology for automotive batteries rather than the usual lead acid or even lithium ion batteries used in most vehicles on the road today. Sodium-ion battery technology, provides safer and more durable energy solutions across various automotive vehicle types and applications, such as personal, commercial, industrial and utility vehicles. Their products are designed to be compatible with more than 95% of vehicles on the market and is readily available in various markets around the world as replacements for conventional MF, EFB, and AGM batteries. As Sodium-ion batteries continue to emerge as a more efficient alternative to traditional lead-acid technologies, Aeson Power continues to be a proponent of this transition.
Jin Chan, Managing Director of Aeson Power said, “Today’s launch represents a big milestone
for Aeson Power as we introduce our NaPulse Starting, NaPulse Start-Stop and NaForce Start- Stop Sodium-ion automotive batteries to the diverse Malaysian market. This product is a
testament to our commitment to providing cutting-edge solutions that not only elevate
automotive performance but also contribute to a more sustainable future. We’re thrilled to bring this innovation to Malaysia and look forward to seeing how it will reshape the way drivers
experience energy storage in their vehicles.”
There are benefits using Sodium-ion batteries actually. One of it that can be observed is that the batteries are much lighter in terms of weight compared to the usual lead-acid batteries. The weight is around half a lead-acid battery from the comparison that was displayed at the event. Aside from that, sodium-ion batteries are predicted to withstand high heat and cold, as well as being able to hold a charge longer that traditional battery types for a price that is only slightly more than those you have been buying.
Automotive starter batteries are often tucked away in the engine bay, facing residual heat from
the engine, its components and the elements. On a particularly busy, hot and humid Malaysian
day where the temperature in the engine bay can reach above 60°C, conventional lead-acid
batteries can suffer from diminished power, accelerated discharge, or swelling, where in
contrast, Sodium-ion batteries maintain stable performance and significantly mitigate the risk of fire or explosion.
Aeson Power’s NaPulse Starting, NaPulse Start-Stop and NaForce Start-Stop Sodium-ion
batteries are uniquely suited to Malaysia’s hot and humid tropical climate, demonstrating
exceptional stability in high-temperature environments, being capable of long-term operation
under conditions of up to 80°C, and long-term storage, where capacity retention remains above 85 percent, even after one month of storage at 60°C.
At the core of Aeson Power’s innovative Sodium-ion automotive batteries is its polyanion
cathode material technology. These batteries offer a combination of advantages including
lightweight construction, ultra-fast charging (as fast as 0% to 100% in 40 minutes), high-rate
discharge for powerful starts, extended cycle life, a wide operating temperature range, ultra-low self-discharge, and strong vibration resistance. They are also highly resilient to over-discharge, with the ability to recover rapidly even when fully discharged to zero volts.
Aeson Power’s Sodium-ion automotive batteries also offer up to 3 times the cycle life of
traditional lead-acid batteries (3,000 cycles @ 50% DoD vs. 500 - 1200 cycles @ 50% DoD).
Furthermore, their cycle life exhibits minimal degradation at high temperatures (lead-acid
batteries experience at least a 15% decrease in cycle life for every 10°C increase in
temperature).
In terms of power, their ultra-low internal resistance enables strong bursts of energy, with
starting performance two to three times greater than that of lead-acid, and peak current in the
first 0.3 seconds exceeding three times that of lead-acid. In addition, their wide operating
voltage range (6–14V) provides superior durability and adaptability, allowing vehicles to start
even at 10.5V, whereas lead-acid batteries typically fail below 12V.
Pricing and Availability
Aeson Power’s NaPulse Starting, NaPulse Start-Stop and NaForce Start-Stop Sodium-ion
batteries are now available for purchase at as low as RM369 and come with a 3-year warranty,
compared to traditional 1-year warranty for lead-acid batteries. These are only slightly higher than regular lead acid batteries but if they promise a longer lifespan, the cost is definitely recovered.
Personally, we are curious of these batteries and when there is a need to change the batteries in our cars, we most likely will be changing to one to see how it performs.
