Perodua Traz SUV launched - Prices start from RM76,100 onwards

This is actually the first serious release from Perodua after two years! Well, I wouldn't consider their recent EV launch as something serious, more like an experiment for their subscription style service and an experiment on how to do electric. But this, the new 2026 onwards Perodua Traz is helluva important as it is basically their brand topping B segment SUV for the masses. At RM76,100 onwards, in two variants (one more is a two tone coloured version only) it should satisfy those that want a larger car with that Perodua badge on it.

Not only that, this is actually the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA) based Toyota Yaris Cross. The development of the model was done by Daihatsu through a joint Toyota-Daihatsu internal company known as Emerging-market Compact Car Company (ECC).and it shares the DNGA-B platform with the AC100 series current Toyota Vios/Yaris sedan which is sold here by UMW Toyota. This is actually different from the Yaris Cross we see in Japan, as that is a TNGA platform SUV (which a shorter wheelbase, and it smaller - Trez is 2620mm vs 2520mm for the XP201 Yaris Cross). So many changes for a car with the same name.

The front section of the DNGA Yaris Cross or for Malaysia, the Trez, is shared with the Toyota Avanza/Veloz/Perodua Alza, and you see the engine bay as well as the basic shape of the dashboard similar to the cars mentioned above. The floorpan and wheelbase have been altered to suit and you see the changes to the body panels up front as well as the adjusted length and other body changes compared to the cars mentioned herein.

This does make the Trez an interesting product. It is powered by a 1.5liter petrol engine and no hybrid version is offered by Perodua. I suppose Perodua is catering to the widest market possible, and that affordable pricetag coupled with the nice Toyota-like looks is sure to make this a hit among Malaysians.

The Trez is front wheel drive, 1.5liter petrol engine making 145Nm torque and 120ps. That engine is coupled to a CVT type gearbox making this exactly like what we have in the Perodua Alza and Myvi. When it comes to economics of scale, one cannot beat Perodua here. Oh, and it still gets the ASEAN NCAP 5Star rating also - click here to read the details of it..

The Trez is also a long time coming. Indonesia got the Yaris Cross in June 2023 and unfortunately due to the recent debacle that involved many Toyota group brands sometime in that year (due to crash testing results or something like that), the launch of the Trez or any new products by Perodua was delayed till recently. So this launch is actually a significant thing for Perodua. And I do see competitors of the brand quaking in their boots after this. Even before launching any new models for about two years, the brand is still market leader, this TREZ will make things feel even hotter for the other brands out there.

I actually like this Trez. The styling, pricing and traditional drivetrain suits my buying needs actually. These days I like the reliability of a Toyota/Daihatsu. Maybe in my older age I have mellowed a little andThe Trez is nice to consider. Not as a sporty ride, but as a reliable means of transport.
