Video: All New 4th Generation Proton Saga tested and previewed - Also now available for booking - prices set between RM40K to 50K which is awesome for something with a proper infotainment system and ADAS safety functions

The All New Proton SAGA has been unveiled recently and we got to view and try it out. So this means a new video is out on our YouTube channel. This means a test around Proton's Tanjung Malim test track and a preview of its features. We see that it has a new interior, especially a new dashboard with a one piece wrap around Infotainment system and instrument cluster. It also features Android Auto and Apple Car Play as well as Advance Driver Assistance Systems. Our video on our preview and test drive session is somewhere below, folks!

For a car that has been recently announced to be open for bookings between RM40,000 to RM50,000 we technically shouldn't be complaining too much. Also early bird offers seem to include a Touch n Go card and a year's worth of servicing.

Proton hasn't changed the actual body shape of the car but added more to the chassis, improved the handling slightly and most importantly, added a new Geely sourced 1.5liter petrol engine to the picture. It actually drives quite well for what it is. There is one engine and two gearboxes - a CVT for the highest spec model and the traditional 4 speed automatic for sceptics. On the CVT, nothing really extraordinary, it will hold its revs as it is the most efficient. If you look at the video you know that Proton benchmarked this car with the Bezza. So fuel efficiency is definitely key. If you add some step up programming to mimic gearshifts, you lose efficiency. So I believe this is why Proton did not do so. And the new Saga is claimed to consume much less than the previous model.

While we think Proton could have done more to the overall styling of the car, as it looks too narrow from certain angles, the improvements inside are actually a lot. But we always want more don't we? The argument that we could put is that Proton could have spent a little more so that it doesn't just keep up with the competition but leapfrog it.

That said, we don't know how much was the actual budget and what their focus groups decided to focus on. Add the fact that this is an in-house Proton design, engineering project with only the Geely 4 cylinder engine that was procured is quite a feat. The infotainment system and instrument display is a Malaysian job, as it also features Bahasa Melayu input like the recently launched X50 SUV facelift. The reskin is quite an alright job, but I believe the dashboard, the infotainment system and the newly added ADAS features are segment leading. Maybe when we add the price, it could be the best in the sub RM50,000 price range. People who buy in this segment basically need a car, and this 4th gen Saga gives a heck of a lot for so little. I may not be the target market, and I know that fact. But if I were to put myself into the shoes of potential customers who only have that amount to spend on a car, I may feel this car is totally right for me. It IS fun to drive you know.

Watch our video folks. We got to try out most of the new stuff in the SAGA and while we have our reservations, we still had bloody fun in the car. Maybe this is all you need and some infotainment system upgrades that actually make the 4th generation Saga a car for 2025 onwards.
