Two variants of the Hyundai IONIQ 6 are offered in Malaysia. These are the Max RWD and Max AWD . The RWD is a single- and the AWD is dual-motor version. Both are powered by a high-capacity 77.4 kW lithium-ion polymer battery, which gives WLTP ranges of 614 km (Max RWD - which is actually very impressive for a BEV car) and 519 km (Max AWD - loses out a bit due to the twin motor, performance based setup, much like any internal combustion engined performance car come to think of it.). Speaking of the performance, with an electric motor on each axle, the Max AWD possesses a total of 239 kW of power and 605 Nm of torque, sprinting it to 100 km/h from rest in just 5.1 seconds. The RWD will do it in 7.1 seconds and both (due to being single speed, 185kmh top speed).
Sime Darby Motors Managing Director of Retail and Distribution for Malaysia Mr Jeffrey Gan explained. - He said, “The IONIQ 6 is the current pinnacle of Hyundai’s electric vehicle (EV) line-up in terms of technology, range, efficiency, and performance, thanks to its state-of-the-art Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). It is one of the few EVs on the planet with an 800-volt architecture, letting it accept up to 350 kW DC charging, which would make possible a 10% to 80% charge time of just 18 minutes. In fact, the IONIQ 6 is one of the world’s fastest- charging EVs.
The IONIQ 6 is Hyundai’s third EV model in Malaysia and the brand's most advanced one yet. This further solidifying Hyundai as an eminent EV brand here in Malaysia and one that is committed to advancing cutting-edge, zero-emissions mobility for a new generation of discerning customers.”
“We are extremely excited to bring the Hyundai IONIQ 6 to Malaysia. Besides setting new standards for Hyundai in terms of technology and efficiency, it looks like nothing else on the road. Its fastback profile and curvaceous shape are the result of extensive wind tunnel testing, such that it achieves a very low 0.21 drag coefficient. Not only is it the most aerodynamic Hyundai ever – it’s one of the world’s most aerodynamic vehicles on sale today,” said HSDM Managing Director Mr Low Yuan Lung.
An IONIQ character trait - Parametric Pixel lighting is present in numerous places including the head and tail lamps, rear spoiler-mounted third brake lamp and even the steering wheel. The streamliner design is a bit different from what you see these days. Very fluid with the tail sitting seemingly lower than the front of the car, The front, with its grill-less design much like the norm for electric cars these days looks familiar due to that fact. The rear, looks very much like something from that German brand Porsche with its sloping rear and that small somewhat ducktail spoiler sitting at the rear. It looks retro-modern, and most likely the reason for that is for the IONIQ 6 to be instantly noticeable in a sea of electric vehicles that seem to be coming out of the woodwork the past couple of years.
The ‘mindful cocoon’ interior features two seamlessly connected 12.3-inch screens, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, wireless phone charging, eco-friendly materials and multi-colour ambient lighting, amongst others. The interior also feels well put together with a nice mix of higher end materials used inside. Sitting position feels good and switchgear is nice to touch. Overall, the interior has a premium touch to it and feels very European in many ways.
In terms of safety, the five-star Euro NCAP-rated IONIQ 6 features seven airbags (including a front-centre airbag) and a comprehensive Hyundai SmartSense suite of active safety systems as standard. The suite includes Remote Smart Parking Assist, which lets the driver remotely manoeuvre the car forwards and backwards –handy for getting into and out of tight parking spaces as well as making small parking adjustments.
An innovative feature of the IONIQ 6 is Vehicle-to-Load (V2L), which turns the car into a mobile powerbank. Via two electrical outlets (one inside and one outside), the IONIQ 6 can charge and power a variety of devices and appliances, from laptops and TVs to camping equipment and electric bikes. It could even be used to rescue a stranded EV.
“The IONIQ 6 is priced, on-the-road before insurance, at RM289,888 for the Max RWD variant and RM319,888 for the Max AWD variant, inclusive of an eight-year/160,000 km battery warranty. For an additional RM10,000, the standard vehicle warranty is upgradable to five years/100,000 km, and attached to this is three years/50,000km of free service. Plus, the first 30 owners will receive a free one-year Shell Recharge Gold membership uponvehicle delivery, allowing them to enjoy attractive charging rates,” said Mr Low.
