PROTON X90 gets its media preview

Yesterday, the 28th March of  2023 PROTON previewed the long awaited X90 SUV to the media over in its Shah Alam styling studio. This is a 7 seat mild-hybrid electric vehicle (MHEV) model. This is PROTON's entry into the New Energy Vehicle (NEV) market and starts them on their path to reducing carbon emissions by adopting green engine technology towards setting a new standard in sustainable mobility.

The PROTON X90 is the third X-series model from PROTON, which is currently the SUV market leader by sales in Malaysia and has been the series that has rejuvenated PROTON in the eyes of the Malaysian public. The X90 will be assembled at PROTON Tanjung Malim alongside the PROTON X50 and PROTON X70.

PROTON states that the X90 will be available in four variants ranging from Standard to Flagship. The largest PROTON SUV now offers space and versatility with a 7-seater configuration but is also available as a 6-seater featuring individual chairs for the second row for those that want space and luxury for the rear passengers.

Based on another Geely SUV, the new model is obviously larger than the X70 (slightly wider and longer for extra seats) and also sits lower somehow. Most likely since it is designed to be a 7 seater and therefore, is actually easier to get in and out than the X70 (which seems to be the highest riding among all the 50, 70 and 90 SUVs). The X90 features a redesigned Ethereal Bow flowing between the headlamps frames creating a strong and harmonious look that tells you that it wants to be considered a premium vehicle. PROTON says that the grille features  diamond shapes inspired by songket patterns, which reveals distinctive repeating patterns of the Infinite Weave design coined by them. This evolutionary Design DNA was inspired by Malaysian craftsmanship and rich cultural heritage.

As with all new vehicles in 2023, safety is at the top of the list for this model as it comes equipped with new features such as Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) which detects approaching vehicles while reversing using the rear radar sensor, Rear Collision Warning (RCW) which alerts driver on potential rear-end collisions and Traffic Sign Information (TSI) which detects and displays road signs. The PROTON X90 is the brand’s first vehicle equipped with these intelligent safety features. All typical active safety stuff for something which is supposedly targeted in the premium category.

The SUV also boasts a 10-inch LCD meter combination, providing an easy-to-read and intuitive digital user interface. The infotainment unit in the flagship variant of the PROTON X90 features a 12.3-inch display unit, with the powerful EO2 processor. This is the largest and most advanced unit available in PROTON vehicles to-date.

The interesting part is the variant that has the 48V EMS System. With the X90, it starts PROTON’s electrification journey. Part of the X90's powertrain is the innovative 48V Electric Motor Synergy (EMS) System that seamlessly integrates six key components, including the 48V Belt-Starter Generator (BSG) motor, the DCDC Converter, the 48V Lithium-Ion Battery, the Battery Management System, the Recuperation Braking System, and the Hybrid Module Control System.

The system not only enhances fuel efficiency and lowers emissions but also delivers additional power and torque for improved performance. It is a sustainable vehicle that offers exceptional performance with eco-friendliness at its core, featuring effortless acceleration, easy overtaking, and seamless coasting. Combining the 48V EMS System and the award-winning 1.5L TGDi engine, the PROTON X90 delivers a combine output of 190PS and 300Nm. The 48V EMS provides an additional boost of 13PS and 45Nm, making it a powerful yet economical option for a three-row SUV package. It is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) optimized for the new system, resulting in a dynamic, surefooted, and smooth driving

So what do I think about the X90? I've already seen it going around in the Klang Valley prior to this release and I think I like a larger PROTON SUV that actually sits lower than the X70 and sits seven people. One reason why I like the lower ride height is that who are we kidding if we say that we want a X70 for off-roading? I would buy one for 99% urban driving and do not require the increased ride height (only good if it floods or if I want to curb hop running away from road bullies or that sort).

So the lower ride height is welcome (seen it on the road and it looks like a Kia Sorento/ Hyundai Santa Fe sized SUV or just slightly larger) and it is also welcomed because it has taken PROTON so darn long to come up with an all-new third model from Geely. The last real new car launch was the X50 and nothing fresh has been launched since then. Of course, still no new sedans or hatchbacks for those of us who prefer smaller cars or traditional sedans.

So anyway, the X90 will be out soon and those eager to get a first-hand look at the new PROTON X90 SUV will have their chance during a series of preview sessions across six cities starting 8 April 2023. The sessions will provide the public with an opportunity to view the vehicle and its features and for those eager to book a unit of the newest Proton model, order books will soon be open so keep a lookout for the announcement.
