The New CHERY O5 Debuts in Malaysia - Formerly known at the Omoda 5, but now facelifted and much improved

Chery Malaysia has launched the all-new Chery O5 on the 10th of September 2025. This is essentially the Chery Omoda 5 refreshed, improved and renamed for Malaysia. According to Chery Malaysia, the new O5 features several first-in-class and upgraded features. The compact SUV is priced very affordably at RM116,800 before insurance and has an attractive launch package for early birds (stated below).

In its Omoda 5 guise, it had sold over 13,000 units since 2023. Now it is the Chery O5 and makes the Chery nomenclature a little clearer since the Chery Group is also sold under other brand names and features a different hirearchy within the group. The Omoda brand name is now featured as part of Omoda | Jaecoo here so now the Omoda 5 is simply called the O5 so that we all don't get so confused.

So what has been improved in the O5 compared to the Omoda 5? Well, you get Chery's latest design language in terms of its front and rear styling. The front end with its matrix style grille and those slim daytime running lights make the O5 stand out and improves on the styling. I do think that it does take after the Omoda | Jaecoo C9, which is actually its bigger brother in other markets. (This is why there is some confusion and renaming required). The SUV is actually quite futuristic looking and the facelift basically keeps things fresh. 

There are improvements to the chassis too actually. Learning from that quite widely reported rear axle issue plaguing the pre-facelift model, Chery has decided to launch this one with something that makes the O5 have a multi-link rear axle rather than just a beam axle. They say that this is the first in its class here in Malaysia and yes, I suppose the claim it correct as most are just beam axles in this price range. This should allow for the O5 to have much better ride and especially better handling against its competitors. I think Chery Malaysia is doing its best to make people forget about the negative issues and I think that it does help. Do note that it is very logical for any company to not allow such incidents to happen again and as I've met with the folks at Chery Malaysia many a time, I doubt that this would happen to them again. Or to you as a customer.

Anyway, aside from that, you still get a 1.5liter turbochared 4 cylinder engine driving the front wheels via a 6 speed Dual Clutch transmission. It makes 156hp and a healthy 230Nm torque. The new addition to the drive modes is the extra mode - now featuring eco, normal and sport. The wheel size is 215/55/18 inches and looks decently sized for the car. 

Inside, you get an all black interior (wit lighter headliner) with the usual sloping / cascading dashboard with a small instrument cluster and large infotainment screen (screen size is a larger 20.5inches now). Quite similar with other cars that come out from China and the same floating center console/armrest area. Of course, this is a facelift and it is as per the previous model so no real surprises there. 

i think this facelift (which keeps the car's good looks ) and name change keeps the first popular Chery sold here as fresh as ever. That price also makes it competitive and it should see decent sales numbers.

As the OMODA 5, with over 13,000 units delivered since 2023, the model now continues its journey with a new identity — the Chery O5. Drivetrain and suspension improvements

Under the hood, the New Chery O5 is powered by a 1.5T engine producing 156 PS and 230 Nm of torque, now paired with a new 6-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (6DCT) for quicker shifts and higher torque capacity.

Most notably, the New Chery O5 is the only model in its class to feature a Multi-Link Independent Rear Suspension. This upgrade marks a significant leap from the previous torsion beam setup, delivering smoother ride comfort, enhanced handling stability, and superior cornering performance which should be a game-changer for drivers who value both comfort and control.

Drivers also gain an expanded choice of three driving modes — Eco, Normal, and Sport —compared to just two previously.\

The improved styling

The New Chery O5 introduces Chery’s latest design language with a Pixel Diamond Front Grille and X-shaped front bumper, complemented by arrow-shaped LED Daytime Running Lights with Sequential Turn Signals.

Its 18-inch Sporty Black Alloy Wheels add a bold, athletic stance, while the new spoiler designenhances aerodynamics and gives the New Chery O5 a sleek, energetic finish, perfectly complementing its dynamic character.

The improved interior

Inside, the New Chery O5 debuts a 20.5-inch Integrated Dual Screen, alongside an upgraded Frameless Rear-View Mirror and Dual Temperature Light Vanity mirrors on the sun visors.

Premium comfort features include Front Ventilated Seats (both front seats), 6-Way Driver Powered Seat and 4-Way Passenger (Front) Powered Seat, Wireless Phone Charging, and a Front Centre Armrest with Cooling Storage — all new additions tailored for daily convenience.

The cabin also boasts a SONY 8-speaker premium audio system, 64 Dynamic Multi-Coloured Ambient Lighting, Power Sunroof, and Seamless Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Safety and Assurance

The New Chery O5 continues to prioritise safety with a 78% High-Strength Steel body, 6- airbags, ISOFIX Child Seat anchors, and Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

Features such as 540° HD Panoramic Camera, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), and Intelligent Headlight Control enhance confidence on the road.

The New Chery O5 holds the same coveted 5-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating, applicable to the current model as it was to the OMODA 5.
