Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) has announced that they are now accepting pre-bookings for the all-new Golf R-Line, with the estimated price range between RM155,000 to RM165,000. The C segment hatchback was unveiled at the Sepang International Circuit as part of the official launch of the eighth generation of the Golf in Malaysia. The car was unveiled together with the iconic hot hatch GTI variant as well as a short preview of the upcoming top of the range, high performance Golf R.
The all-new eighth generation Golf pays homage to its heritage, with its familiar looks but with with improved performance, enhanced digitalisation, and more intuitive controls. The changes are most noticeable in its clean and contemporary look. In short, it gets more refinement, slightly more handling and even more connectivity for the occupants inside. It is a current Golf.
The Golf how has a leaner front grille, narrow LED headlights, and an imposing bumper lend an assured stance to the striking model. Inspired by the performance R range, the R-Line has a sporty styling package fitted to create an edgier look while maintaining great value. You get an interior as close to the hotter GTI but with a more subdued interior lighting (instead of a lot of red). You do get the same sort of front seats too (less electric adjustments and very slightly less sporty bolstering on the sides) so aside from the subtle differences outside, and the 1.4 vs 2.0liter engine under the bonnet, you get a lot of the same in many ways. Except the outright speed of course.
Volkswagen says that every aspect in the interior has been carefully planned to ensure that this vehicle is more closely connected to the driver than ever. The all-new Golf offers an entirely digitalised interior landscape, known as the Driver’s Workspace, to provide seamless connectivity and convenience.
The new dashboard has a new-generation 10.25” Digital Cockpit; a multifunction steering wheel with haptic-touch control; as well as an advanced 10” Discover Media infotainment system with navigation. Definitely modern as heck even against the Mk7.5 which had a digital instrument cluster. This, you know has more integration.
Another new feature is the compact and innovative new-generation gear selector – it is the first Volkswagen model in Malaysia to carry this. It is tiny. All you actually need since it is an automatic in the first place. Select P,R,N or D to drive. No need large gear knobs these days.
Design and features in the all-new Golf are meant to excite, while the performance more than delivers. Under the hood of the R-line lies a 1.4TSI turbocharged engine that is paired with 8-speed automatic shift by wire transmission, producing 150PS and 250Nm of torque.
The R-Line is available in five colours, including two new ones – the matte Moonstone Grey and metallic Kings Red. Other colours are Atlantic Blue in metallic finishing, as well as Deep Black and Oryx White with pearl effect. The moonstone grey you see in the pics here is quite unique. A very understated look to the car with some of us saying that is looks like an undercoat with a glossy laquer over it. I actually like the difference it brings to the passenger car colour charts.
As this car is now locally assembled, the estimated price is competitive against other C segment cars. In fact, this could be the best car to buy if you want refinement, performance in one compact package. Add the fact that this front wheel drive Golf comes with a traditional torque converter gearbox, it will be refined. A good way to differentiate this and the hot GTI. This also helps those who want total peace of mind with a traditional gearbox. Good move. For an urban roundabout, a traditional slushbox is what I would personally want over a speedy shifting DSG.
VPCM supports with aftersales care through three years free maintenance, five years unlimited mileage warranty, and five years roadside assistance.
