At The Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 & Directional 5 Tire Launch

It was a whole day event held on the 30th of July 2011 which I attended together with a pal of mine, Firdaus (who maintains his own VW Polo GTI blog). The event was pretty good actually. We got to know about the new Eagle F1 tires and they had food. There was breakfast, lunch and tea. We had food and was asked to drive around some cones, sat through a product briefing, was driven round and round the Proton High Speed Oval Test Ring and then drove round a short time attack course - which I promptly got confused and drove an extra trip around some cones. Give me a proper track or a navigator as I am useless in memorizing stuff.

It was an event for the local car clubs and on-line forums. Something different as the potential consumers get to experience what automotive journalists and the manufacturer's vendors get to experience at most product launches. I like the food part, aside from piloting the Honda Civics and BMWs available. I hated being driven by others at high speeds around a test track. Especially after lunch.

And the event ended with the Goodyear Drift Team's drift exhibition. Firdaus managed to catch a ride and found out how effective 400-500bhp can wipe out Eagle F1 tires in a few minutes. As I feel extremely mortal  and Firdaus being a tad bit younger by almost a decade, I did not do so. Ah, the exuberance of youth.

Thanks to Leon of Quick-Save Auto Boutique, USJ's friendly neighbourhood tire shop who did not get lost during the time attack event and managed to get a ride in the track-day prepared Porsche Cayman. This car was fast, really fast (even if it is only a Cayman).

Oh yes. The tires are fine. As high performance all weather tires both Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 and the Eagle F1 Directional 5 are good. The Asymmetric 2 feels much better even in the wet. I suppose this is because it IS the more expensive tire of the two. And I did wish that they'd throw in some other tires or even the earlier Eagle F1s for us to compare especially since they claim the Directional 5 brakes 3 meters shorter and the Asymmetric 2 brake a meter shorter than other tires. These tires are good....but how good in real life situations are another thing.

Anyway, the whole review is posted on CarThrottle.com. You can click here to read a more detailed report  or view some more pictures of the event.
