Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) have launched the locally assembled Golf R - the only country to assemble it outside of Germany, and you can see it on display at the ongoing (till 26th May 2024) Malaysia Autoshow 2024 at MAEPS Serdang. The new Golf R will be sold at the recommended retail price of RM332,990. The price is inclusive of Volkswagen Assurance Package (VAP), which supports owners with 5 years maintenance, 5 years unlimited mileage warranty, and 5 years roadside assistance. With this package and the goodies which you can read in the paragraph below, this is super value for money. Better than the Civic Type-R which sells for around RM400,000. When I say it's better, it is as compared to the Civic, you actually get better ride, better comfort, better ergonomics and less boy racer attitude and its cheaper. Of course, if you want attitude, this is understated and the CTR has more of that.
Now comes the interesting bit which you get with buying the car. The Golf R comes standard with the “R Performance Package”, which includes titanium Akrapovič exhaust, 19-inch Estoril alloy wheels, a new rear spoiler, as well as “Drift” and “Special” modes. You get toys from the authorised distributor and you don't need to end up in Sunway to fit a sports exhaust. This is quite nice indeed.
As for the“Drift” and “Special” modes, this is accessible through the “R” button on the steering wheel, extend the range of customisation modes for the drivetrain and chassis to inject even more driver and car interaction to the driving experience. In “Drift” mode, torque is prioritised to the rear wheels for fluid and controlled slides while the “Special” mode adjusts suspension settings for optimum contact, offering driving performance best experienced on backroads.
Specifically designed for the Nürburgring-Nordschleife, the “Special” mode gives the Golf R a set-up that meets the distinctive requirements of what is probably the most demanding racetrack in the world.
As for what gives the R its performance, the familiar Volkswagen 2.0TSI 4-cylinder turbo engine pushes out 320 PS and 400 Nm of torque. Coupled with a 7-speed wet-type, dual-clutch DSG transmission, the Golf R rockets from 0-100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds to reach a maximum speed of 250 km/h. The R has the 4MOTION all-wheel drive system with performance torque vectoring to keep it planted.
Visually, the flagship of the Golf range is identified by its motorsport-inspired R front bumper and R radiator grille. Three colour choices are available - the signature Lapiz Blue, Deep Black and Pure White.
The sportiness of the Golf R in the interior is evident with R decorative trim in Carbon Grey, premium Nappa sport leather seats complete with iconic R styling, as well as the R performance steering wheel with blue backlit R button and shift paddles.
Other notable new features include a Head-Up Display (HUD) that is projected to the windscreen, 10-inch Discover Pro infotainment system, with audio by a 10-speaker, 480-watt Harman Kardon sound system, wireless smartphone charging and automatic high beam assist.
The Golf R is supported with IQ.DRIVE technology and advanced driver assistance systems such as Travel Assist with Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Side Assist, Front Assist, Lane Assist and Emergency Assist.
