Ten Motorcycle Mechanics Receive Awards from Ducati MotoGP Rider Andrea Dovizioso at a Special Meet the Fans Session Organised by MotoGP Sponsors Shell Malaysia

The Malaysian MotoGP weekend is underway and the activities regarding motorcycles are many. Yesterday,  Ten lucky motorcycle mechanics were presented awards by Ducati MotoGP motorcycle racer Andrea Dovizioso and Shell Malaysia Trading Sdn Bhd Managing Director Shairan Huzani Husain at an exclusive meet-the-fans session organised by Shell Malaysia ahead of the 2019 Shell Malaysia Motorcycle Grand Prix this weekend. Many braved the traffic to make it to the event which was attended by Grab bike riders and a few motorcycle clubs, notably the Desmo Owners Club Malaysia. Aside from that, local celebrity Fattah Amin who is also a Shell Advance brand ambassador for Malaysia attended the event.

The event was quite a memorable one for many. There were many happy motorcyclists who attended the event and many of them took the opportunity to queue up and get their items, like Shell Advance lubricant bottles and their own helmets with Andrea Dovizioso and Fatah Amin's signatures. There was also lots of food to eat and a live band to liven up the evening. Of course, the music session continued after Andrea had left - he did have to prepare for practice, qualifying the next day and onwards for the next few days.

The ten mechanics took part in a special training programme organised by Shell Malaysia Trading Sdn Bhd. These lucky chaps have been chosen to represent Malaysia at the 2019 Shell Advance Global Masterclass competition which will be held on 4 November 2019 at The Saujana Hotel Kuala Lumpur. Here, the Malaysian mechanics will have to muster up their motorcycle repair skills against contestants from India, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam (global enough I suppose - especially so in terms of motorcycle market share actually).

In Malaysia, about 750 mechanics and workshop owners from 13 states across Malaysia took part in this year’s Shell Advance Masterclass. The training programme is an upskilling initiative for motorcycle mechanics and workshop owners. The module comprises a series of online videos developed in collaboration with Ducati to guide and provide mechanics with skilled knowledge and tips on proper motorcycle maintenance. The videos provide a step-by-step guide on topics such as brake maintenance, piston replacement, stator replacement, valve timing and timing chain replacement among others.

Shell Malaysia states that this Shell Advance initiative is a one-of-its-kind further learning and certification tool in the industry. The company leverages on their own research & devlopment technologies as well as their ongoing global partnership with Ducati. What this does is to help train and certify motorcycle mechanics in whatever major developing country markets the company is at. One reason why Shell has decided on this initiative is that most of the mechanics have no formal education and are mainly self-taught or learned on the job.

It is hoped that the Shell Advance Masterclass programme can help local mechanics gain recognition for their technical skills and outride challenges to build rewarding careers.
