The Volvo EX30 has been launched for the Malaysian market. This is Volvo’s newest electric car and is a compact B segment luxury fully electric SUV. The EX30 is big on technology and safety and is the latest embodiment of Volvo’s vision to give people the freedom to move in a personal, sustainable and safe way, with three variants starting at RM188,888 onwards and a range topping twin motor, very fast accelerating variants, it covers what most well heeled urban dwellers would want in a compact roundabout.
The EX30 is small, but it is the fastest acceleration of any Volvo car to date where the twin engine range topper, the Ultra Twin Performance version doing 0-100kmh in around 3.6 seconds.. In full Ultra variant, tt also comes equipped with the latest technology that powers a new automatic parking feature, a contextual user interface with Google Built-in, upgraded semi-autonomous Pilot Assist functionality, and 360° environmental awareness from its multiple cameras, sensors and radars. You also have a soundbar styled Harman Kardon audio system in all variants (with speakers at the rear also for Malaysia) as well as a lot of usable space inside. So even the entry level Plus is a good proposition.
A stated, three variants will be offered in Malaysia – two single-motor extended-range Plus and Ultra versions and the dual-motor Ultra Twin Performance.
The range-topping Volvo EX30 Ultra Twin gets 428 PS and 543 Nm of torque launching it from standstill to 100 km/h in only 3.6 seconds. Extremely fast for a car that looks the way it does. As for both EX30 Plus and EX30 Ultra variants with a single permanent magnet synchronous motor on the rear axle, it has to 'make do' with a mere 272 PS and 343 Nm of power and torque respectively for a century sprint of 5.3 seconds. No slouch also actually. Althought these cars are fast accelerating, the will top out at 180kmh owing to the nature of most EVs running a single speed gearbox which limits gearing as well as the fact that if I remember correctly, Volvo also feels that their cars should have a speed limit of around 180kmh also.
All models come with the highest specification 69 kWh NMC battery pack that provides up to 476 km of range for the single motor variants or 450 km for the EX30 Ultra Twin Performance 1 . The EX30 is capable of 175 kW DC fast charging and can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in as little as 28 minutes 2 .
Standard equipment includes LED headlights, 19-inch Diamond Cut alloy wheels, Pilot Assist, Harman Kardon Premium Sound, power tailgate, frameless auto-dimming side and rear-view mirrors, ambient interior themes, and the full suite of Volvo’s advanced driver assistance systems. The Ultra variants add Park Pilot Assist, 360° camera, powered front seats, and a panoramic sunroof.
Customers have the option of Cloud Blue, Vapour Grey, Crystal White, and Onyx Black exteriors, with an eye-catching Moss Yellow colourway – inspired by lichen growing along the Swedish west coast – exclusively available for the Ultra variants for a limited run in Malaysia.
The EX30 is Volvo Car Malaysia’s latest fully electric vehicle to be assembled locally and is priced from RM188,888 for the EX30 Plus, RM208,888 for the EX30 Ultra, and RM228,888 for the EX30 Ultra Twin Performance 3 . Sabah and Sarawak customers get the three variants at RM188,648, RM208,648 and RM228,648 respectively.
As with every fully electric model from Volvo, the EX30 comes with five-year complimentary Volvo Service Plan (VSP), digital services, 24-hour roadside assistance, and unlimited-mileage vehicle warranty. For further peace of mind, the high-voltage battery pack is warrantied for eight years.
Intelligently Safe
In conceptualising the car, Volvo designers worked on the basis that every moment matters – every idea, design, material choice, calculation, and test – to make a car that is meant for every journey and every person both within and around the car.
The EX30 comes equipped with Volvo’s full Safe Space Technology suite and advanced driver assistance systems shared with Volvo’s top-of-the-line cars – enabled by radars, ultrasonic sensors and cameras located around the car.
In fact, the EX30 adds even more safety features, which includes
An innovative door opening alert that detects bikes or other road users from behind and warns occupants with visual and audio alarms when attempting to open the door.
Upgraded Pilot Assist that also adjusts the optimum distance from large vehicles on the highway.
Automatic braking for front cross traffic, intersection turns, and low speed reversing.
Automatic steering avoidance for vulnerable road users such as bikers travelling next to the lane and in the same direction.
The Volvo EX30 is also the first to include a new generation of Volvo’s Park Pilot Assist feature that can handle parallel, curved, perpendicular and diagonal fishbone parking spaces. Park Pilot Assist can automatically identify available parking spaces and take over the accelerator, brakes and steering to manoeuvre the car.
The EX30 blends Scandinavian minimalistic chic with uncompromising safety, and its city-focused design is intended for a new generation of Volvo owners who live or commute in the city, value style and sustainability, and whose active lifestyle demands practical and effortless driving for multiple destinations in the same day.
The EX30’s urban-friendly size makes navigating busy city streets and tight parking spaces a breeze, while a low hood, extra-wide headlights and fenders, large wheels, and 171 mm of ground clearance adds to a confident look that never looks out of place at any office, gym, social club or urban destination.
The EX30 boasts a clean, minimalist cabin enhanced with five interior ambient light themes inspired by Swedish nature for every mood, featuring calming, shifting shades projected on the interior panels. For extra immersion, owners can pair each lighting theme with an ambient soundscape.
The EX30 is also Volvo’s first car to introduce Harman Kardon Premium Sound within a single soundbar unit embedded in the dashboard. Inspired by home audio design, the soundbar frees up valuable space in the front doors while reducing weight and material resources without compromising high-fidelity, driver-focused audio.
The EX30 maximises every interior space, with smarter storage solutions such as:
Inbuilt wireless phone charging slot that keeps up to two phones in place, and flexible central storage that can easily fit a handbag - However I have a niggle.
This central storage is only accessible via an icon on the central infotainment screen (photo above the icon above the HOME icon at the bottom right side of the screen), so it is secure but could be a hassle as there is no physical button or latch and you may need to wait for the system to boot up before pressing the icon on the screen. I prefer a physical button or switch these days as fumbling around isn't something I like..
Sliding cupholder and storage that can be fully tucked away under the central armrest
Large door pockets replacing traditional door speakers
Removable rear storage box under the central armrest that doubles up as a trash bin (removable could also mean that you can 'remove' it permanently and keep it at home by mistake)
Rear luggage space of 318 litres with all seats up or 718 litres with the second-row split seats fully folded 4 , easily accommodating golf bags, flat-pack furniture and baby strollers
61 litres of hidden rear storage under the flexible load floor which can also be used to hide valuable cargo like laptops
A handy “Will it Fit?” graphic on the power tailgate with intuitive examples of what can be transported with ease
The Volvo EX30 is the only sub-compact SUV with Google built-in, now enhanced with wireless Apple AirPlay for seamless connectivity. It also comes with a dedicated phone app that can be used to lock and unlock the car, set charging levels, and manage settings remotely.
Every step that went into designing the EX30 has a significant impact for Volvo’s sustainability ambitions and electrification journey. By tackling emissions across the entire production and lifecycle of the car as well as considerate use of recycled or renewable materials inside and out, the EX30 designed to have the lowest carbon footprint of any Volvo car to date – less than 30 tonnes over 200,000 km of driving 5 .
The interior of the EX30 is inspired by nature, with clean, minimalistic Scandinavian design while maintaining a premium look and feel. All variants for Malaysia come with a sporty Indigo interior featuring upcycled denim textiles, upholstery made from 100 percent recycled polyester and Nordico with recycled PET content, while plastic materials are made with 30 percent recycled content
So what do I think about the EX30?
It is well styled inside and out. Distinctly Volvo in its boxy execution but very handsome for a subcompact SUV. It have a lot of innovative touches inside and out and should be a car for those that want a compact urban commuter. The only drawback is that it is a EV in a small size. Which isn't if that is what you want. As a car to send kids to school, go to work and back, grocery shopping and weekend mall or pub hopping this could be superb.
In terms of space inside, it feels nice up front but a little too cosy in the legroom for larger blokes like me. Getting in and out isnt a issue for me and the ergonomics seem spot on up front if you're going to drive it. I haven't managed to drive one yet, but will report if I do.
At RM188,888 starting, the base variant could be the one to get as it is a good entry point for those that want a premium brand as well as want to try a premium brand EV also. It is priced more affordable than any of the European or American brands out there and while it may be a compact car, the name is a selling point too.
