Last week, on the 12th of October 2022, express bus operator SuperNice Express (SuperNice), a brand under the Unimax Group, received the first Scania coaches with Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS). These are the first buses in Malaysia equipped with active safety systems and features the usual anti-lock braking systems but with electronic safety programme (ESP) lane departure warning and Advanced emergency braking which can prevent collision with the vehicle in front by applying the brakes automatically.
Roy Chew, Unimax Group Chairman received the keys to two units of Scania K360IB4x2 coaches with ADAS from Heba El Tarifi, Managing Director, Scania Southeast Asia. Aside from the two coaches received, SuperNice also signed a MoU for an order of 10 more units, made up of six double-deck and the four single-deck coaches all equipped with ADAS. The event was witnessed by Professor Dr Wong Shaw Voon, Chairman of Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) and Robert Lejon, Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of Sweden.
The standard Safety features include the Electronic Braking System (EBS), Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) and Retarder. These are seen in most newer European buses seen in Malaysia. But what makes these buses special and better for the driver and also the safety of the passengers are the extra enhanced safety that ADAS brings to the picture.
ADAS will in some way help the bus drivers out in mitigating accidents especially in cases where drivers are sleepy or tired by being an extra eye for traffic conditions. Lane keeping assistance from LDW would help minimise blindspots collisions and AEB will definitely improve reaction times in cases of vehicles suddenly slowing down in front of the bus. With this, it is hoped that more long haul bus operators will follow suit and add buses with active safety features.
“The ADAS features will bring out the best from the Scania coaches in terms of safety and comfort for passengers and the drivers, alongside the already well-known fuel efficiency benefits for express bus operations and the reduction in CO2 emissions. Profitability is therefore achieved for my business,” stated Roy Chew.
“The Scania with ADAS technology is one of the many aspects the transport industry needs to move forward to reduce the number of road accidents in Malaysia. I believe SuperNice’s stance will encourage other express bus operators to follow suit,” stated Professor Dr Wong.
These Scania coaches are packaged with a Repair and Maintenance contract as well a Scania's Fleet Management System. This is to assure SuperNice of maximum uptime and that the ADAS is maintained by Scania to secure the highest safety standard consistently. The Scania Hire Purchase agreement from Scania Credit Malaysia supports SuperNice with predictable cost over the entire lifecycle of the coaches. The complimentary FMS Control 10, onboard these coaches will help SuperNice reduce fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions through the power of data analysis.
