After 2,500 Units, the Last Scania PGR series truck rolls off the assembly line in Malaysia - New Scania Truck Variants to be Launched Soon

It has been a good run while it lasted but recently, the last Scania PGR series truck has rolled off the assembly line at the Scania Regional Production Centre in Port Klang. It must be a notable record of sorts, as Scania Malaysia has produced and sold more than 2,500 units of the Scania PGR series of trucks (P, G & R series folks...not PGR as a single model) since they were first introduced in the country back in 2008. So one decade and 2,500 units assembled locally later, its time to say goodbye to all three of these current PGR series of trucks.

More than 800,000 Scania PGR series of trucks have been delivered globally since its launch in 2004. The P-series, R-series (both introduced in 2004) and G-series (introduced in 2007) trucks offered the performance needed and increased fuel savings that helped Scania customers attain the best profitability during long-haul operations.

However, this does not mean that existing owners of the Scania PGR series trucks will be left standing. They need not worry as the phase out will not impact their existing vehicles which can still be serviced as usual at Scania service centres. Scania Malaysia is aware of how long the lifespan for most trucks here in the country. It is usually somewhat longer than usual owing to the many unique factors of our country.

According to Scania, the PGR series was designed to provide the best especially in terms of the improved fuel economy, enhanced safety and performance, higher uptime and being environmentally friendly. Even to the end of its production life cycle it still is able to keep the standards required by many of its customers and operators. Many drivers and operators I have met seem to think that the PGR series of trucks are among to top tier of trucks here in Malaysia.

But the story comes to an end. The final PGR truck has finally rolled off the assembly line here and it marks the end to an era. The truck has given Scania a strong foothold in Malaysia’s commercial vehicle industry and we await its replacement eagerly. The new truck generation from Scania is soon to be launched in Malaysia and according to the folks at Scania Malaysia, it will mark the beginning of an exciting era for Scania and their customers.

The new range of Scania trucks will provide even better fuel economy, improved performance and cab safety, increased uptime and reduced CO2 emissions, following from the legacy of Scania’s PGR truck series. According to their press releases, their new generation trucks take have improved injectors and better combustion which contribute to reducing both engine speed and cutting fuel consumption (eg. by up to 4% on their 9-litre engine)

If you are curious, Scania’s new truck generation recently broke cover at the IAA 2018 in Europe. Scania's offering now includes no less than 24 different cabs, which can be divided into five different series. The latest additions are the L-series and the CrewCabs in the Pseries. The PGR series replacement seems to be also called the New P series, New G Series and New R series. The new L Series is quite unique in that it is an extra low truck - hence the L in the nomenclature.

I wonder if this L series truck would be launched here aside from the all-new PGR trucks. Check it out below! According to Scania, urban driving involves many starts and stops, frequent climbing in and out of the cab, and the constant need to keep track of other vehicles and pedestrians around the truck while driving. The new Scania L-series is purpose-designed for congested city conditions from the ease of getting in and out and the better visibility the lowered cabin gives the driver. And people driving SUVs like the comanding driving position! Trucks are going super low in a way. - MotoringMalaysia
