Hyundai Tucson 2.0L CRDI Diesel is Launched - Completes the Malaysian Hyundai Tucson Line-up

Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors, the official distributor of Hyundai in Malaysia has launched the Hyundai Tucson 2.0L CRDI Diesel. This comes just a few weeks after the launch of the Tucson 1.6 Turbo GDI petrol variant and it somehow completes the engine variants of the Tucson here. We now get the 2.0 normally aspirated petrol, the 1.6 turbo petrol and this 2.0 turbo diesel version. Something from everyone at a lower price as now all Tucson variants sold in Malaysia come with the tax lowering Energy Efficient Vehicle (EEV) status.

So before we get all excited about the turbo diesel's torque, we should get excited about the prices of all the Tucson models sold here. Being EEV status vehicles, the new, streamlined Tucson variants are assembled locally. Instead of a premium spec or a base specification, the Tucson comes in 3 variants for each engine specced. So, there are one variant only for each engine type - the normally aspirated 2.0L Elegance  at RM126,188, the 1.6L Turbo GDI at RM145,688 and this newly launched 2.0L CRDI Diesel at RM155,788. Prices are on the road price indicated excludes insurance.

The EEV pricing only affects the 2.0 Elegance in some ways as it was launched much earlier in November 2015. The price for the Elegance sits slightly above its original introductory price of RM125,311.51 but below the original retail price which was RM3,000 more.

Anyway, now on with the Tucson Turbo Diesel...
The Tucson 2.0L CRDI Diesel is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. This 2.0liter 4 cylinder new common rail direct injection turbo diesel engine makes 178PS and 400Nm from 1,750 to 2,750 rpm of torque. It has a top speed of 201km/h and 0-100kmh is claimed to be dispatched in 9.3 seconds.

New convenient features include the LED Headlamps with static bending lights; Auto Hold function that automatically holds the brakes steady once the vehicle has come to a complete stop thereby preventing it from creeping forward or rolling backward; and a smart powered tailgate which opens at the approach of the key-holder. Optional accessories such as three leather packages (colour options: black, red and white), body kit and 19” rims (shown below) are also made available with the Tucson 2.0L CRDI Diesel.

The Tucson Turbo Diesel definitely makes the local Tucson line-up complete. We now have one for those that want performance in either petrol or diesel forms and we have the normally aspirated version for those that would like a Tucson but not pay a whole lot for it. In terms of performance, the 1.6 turbo petrol makes 177ps and 265Nm. It may have more horsepower and the fact that its powerband is from 1,500rpm to 4,500rpm makes it a different drive compared to the turbo diesel which makes its thumping 400Nm torque (and similar horsepower) at under 2,750rpm. The petrol turbo will be a more spirited drive with the driver aiming for the redline more than the turbo diesel. Both would be good enough for an effortless cruise. But I have the nagging feeling that for in-gear acceleration, and for the urban cut and thrust, the diesel may be a little more fun.

All Tucson variants are entitled to 50,000km free service with 3 years validity and are offered with a 5-year or 300,000km (whichever comes first) warranty on all its new passenger vehicles.
