Thoughts on Urban SUVs and Pickup Trucks since a massive jam caused by flash floods had hit KL again this evening

The photos you see herein are supposedly taken earlier this evening. It was forwarded to me by a friend who got it from a friend who may have got them from his friend and so on. Two different locations. The one above looks like it is the entrance to University Malaya near Jalan Pantai Dalam and the other looks like somewhere along Jalan Bangsar or Jalan Tun Sambanthan. Both hit by flash floods caused by the heavy rain this evening. Local dailies have stated that up to 15 cars have been submerged and hundreds trapped due to rising waters.

I find it sad that whilst the whole of Kuala Lumpur is not under water, parts of it still get affected even with out storm management tunnels and larger drainage systems put in place. I think the pace of development is taking place too fast and we are pouring concrete where there was once grass, trees and earth. This causes water to flow fast and not seep into the ground. But this is the price for progress. A lot of wastage. From time to the amount of repairs needed on the vehicles trapped. Too lazy to start finger pointing. There are solutions out there somewhere but it should be done soon instead of bickering amongst the leaders.

You can see a new Honda Accord getting stucked. Water all around it. But notice in the background of the photo below that even SUVs and Pickup trucks are stuck and have fallen prey to the flood waters. Even an SUV will not be spared if it cannot move out of the floods. Now what is the point of buying an urban SUV or a Pick Up? To climb curbs and to avoid becoming trapped in flash floods.

After viewing the photo below I do not really see a need for one anymore. Public transport seems like a great thing to use these days. Especially the MRT or LRT track you see in the pics.
